  • this is a california 1958 beetle that was towed to the east coast in the 80s, then left to rot in the muddy water of a new hampshire back yard, lets see if we can save the rodent infested engine?

    Even with all of that corrosion and water damage, the car is STILL in better condition than most of the stuff Jason drags home :D

      👍👌👏😁😀 Yeah, you are absolutely right. I guess 5150mxVW simply loves to rescue bugs without any floor pan left. LOL ;-)
      Seriously: I like that as much as possible cars and parts are rescued. Way, way to much stuff is abandoned by the owners to let rot away without any sense/reason. That's a pity.

    A friend came across a stash of vw parts pre covid, I helped clear it with him. Apart from the 30+ engines there was dozens of genuine thermostats that were being dumped till I educated him in the ways of mustie!

    I sure do enjoy how you don't add a bunch of music and manic jump cuts with over-done chatter to 'hype' up the content. The best 'workshop' videos are the ones that just go with the natural ambiance and that takes you right into the video like you're there. There's also a certain ASMR to it and I enjoyed every minute.

    One can almost hear the sighs of relief from these old neglected bugs when Mustie1 starts giving them some love :) Always a pleasure to watch even as a non-VW owner, kinda cathartic while I'm making dinner :)

    Love it. Most VW engines you work on. I call bad. But you save them somehow. When you call one bad. It is plain horrible! Thank you for doing this video. Explaining each part. Why it can’t be saved. This was just incredible. Can’t wait to see how the rest of the restore on the car goes. Again your videos are top notch. I enjoy everyone of them. I may not be a mechanic. But I have new respect for engines. You do a great job! Keep up the great work. A name. That would be a mustie ONE.

    In my past i have owned 2 beetle VW's 1954 and 1962 Neither was a car that I ever warmed to. Pretty simple to maintain, reliable in the extrem, I drove 400 miles on 3 cylinders, went "fine" but no faster than 30 MPH! BUt the worst cars I ever ever had for driving. I admire your love of them and your ability to bring them back from the dead.

    Loved the air chisel on the cylinder head, reminded me of a friends Triumph Stag, the head gasket had gone and welded the head to the block, we left it running for 20 minuets with no head bolts in it and it still didn't move!

    Mustie, this video was a Stephen King horror movie. It was hard to watch the destruction of the engine. Please save what you can and get this bug running. VW bugs are the only cars with a soul. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait for the sequel.

    In the late 70's we were buying VWs for $100 left and right. Had to do some creative engine swapping... using a dremel to clearance the transmissions and flywheels. Of course the magnesium powder ignited sometimes, and I lost my eyebrows more than once. Good times.

    The car did drive before it was left where you bought it according to what the seller said. A Camaro was towing it until it couldn’t tow the Volkswagen over the Rockies. They drove the Volkswagen over the Rockies and tried to change it to a 12 volt system which is when it was left.

    I'm quite familiar with our winters and the road salt that eats our vehicles alive, it's difficult to find one here that is rust-free if it's 10 years old or older. That bug is in decent shape because it's a California car, you might be able to restore it with a lot of time and money, but to someone lazy like me, it's too much work. Love your channel :-)

    Mercy! I live in the Pacific NW where it is wet. Never have I seen old junk rust like that just from ground water. It's almost as if the water and soil has salt in it.

    Two of the main differences is a 12 volt flywheel has a o ring seal and a 200mm clutch and a 6 volt flywheel uses a paper gasket and has a 180 mm clutch

    PSA. IF you have old cars in your back yard or barn. PUT THEM ON CEMENT BLOCKS and throw some mice killer pellets around it.

    Ever tried using hydraulic to un-stick a piston or to push the head off? It would not have made any difference in this case but a project for the future. Re-purpose an old jack or port a power pump then to a spark plug screw like compression tester with shrader removed.

    That bug has "jungle cammo". Ya think there might be some rust issues?? Going up the trailer reminded me of dog scooting it's butt on the rug. Maybe you can salvage the valve covers.... maybe.
