Baul Songs occupy the largest part of Folk Songs from Bengal. Bengali folk culture has a vast history. One of the major pillar of Bengali Folklore are the Bauls. The Bauls are a group of mystic minstrels from Bengal which includes Indian State of West Bengal and the country of Bangladesh. Bauls constitute both a syncretic religious sect and a musical tradition. Bauls are a very heterogeneous group, with many sects, but their membership mainly consists of Vaishnava Hindus and Sufi Muslims.They can often be identified by their distinctive clothes and musical instruments. The Bauls are not only folk artists who sing Bengali Folk Songs but there is a deep rooted philosophy behind their music. The Bauls are a mystic tribe that originates from a sexo-yogic tradition of both Vaisnava cult as well as Sufism. The Bauls follow a lifestyle that is secretive and is an age old tradition.
This compilation album consists of various traditional and popular Baul Songs sung by the very famous Kartick Das Baul. The word Baul has its etymological origin in the Sanskrit word Vatula ("mad", from vayu - "air" or "wind") and is used for someone who is possessed or crazy. Bauls are an extension of the Sahajiya philosophy, which in turn derives from the Nath tradition. They believe in living the world as a half-sanyasis. Baul music celebrates celestial love, but does this in very earthy terms, as in declarations of love by the Baul for his bosh-tomi or lifemate. With such a liberal interpretation of love, it is only natural that Baul devotional music transcends religion and some of the most famous baul composers, such as Lalon Fokir, criticized the superficiality of religious divisions. Most of the times a Baul Song will have dual or sometimes a third or fourth layer of meaning. On the face value a Baul Song can be interprated as an ode to Radha or Krishna but in secret can be analysed as an explanation of their secret sexo-yogic practices. This compilation album is packed with such lovely yet mystical Baul Songs. Kartick Das Baul has rendered his rustic and melodious voice to these beautiful Folk Songs from Bengal.
