Great video. I'll also mention that there are numerous carnivorous plant groups that are eager to help people get started in the hobby! Once you start a collection it becomes much easier to trade with other hobbyists and it can be a very enjoyable part of the hobby.

I really second buying small both in terms of vendor and plant. Buying from a smaller business can be a little more expensive (other times less expensive!) but will come with the support of the vendor and IMO often better quality plants. Buying seedlings have been the easiest way for me to grow my collection. It takes patience, but it's so rewarding to watch them grow :)

Absolutely!!! I think it is more rewarding too and you get to see the plants grow. Also making those connections has been so much fun!

Just curious, do you have a general rule of thumb of how far away an artificial light should be from nepenthes plants? Or is every situation different?
I am using a shop light from harbor freight. 4 feet long. White light. 5500 lm, 4000 K. It’s about a foot and a half away from my plants.

Hey! It varies from plant to plant. I have 4 600 w lights that are about 4 feet from the plants. Look for those that fall in that kelvin range but also PPFD matters. On the low end 100 is minimum for lower light growing and 900 is on the high end for like sundews. Mars Hydro has a good 600 w one for like 60 dollars.

Very true! Carnivero has them on hand now. I did that with a bunch. They take a while but will be worth it for sure!

problem is that you have alot of the same plant and its very long to grow! i prefere basal cutting, they grow extra fast if the mother plant was already big! i bought a variegated ventrata basal with only 4-5 first leaves, had only 2-3 leaves left after riping the lower one to root it, its been less than a year and its now almost 2 foot long and is now vining...
growing seedling is an experience to have when you already have other nepenthes, but not for begining a collection, way too long to grow! and they are all pretty much the same with some varient as its the same pod...

@@motatwo true they do take a long time grow. They do have a lot of genetic diversity though. I have some that look really different. I would say to have a good mix of full grown, medium size and babies. That way you are satisfied at all levels. I agree that just seedlings would probably not be fun for most people.
