What a great tutorial. Thankyou. I have just started painting again and have found I just love your work and the magic way you have with colours to bring the painting to life. Thankyou❤
Finally received my drawing fluid to paint this! I looked at your tutorial then closed it, draw then painted by looking at the photo trying to remember how you did things. It turned out great! I love learning by watching artist paint.
Love how the painting turned out, and I'm really liking the bokeh watercolor background look. I tried it on a painting a few days old and still lifted great!
Love the fact you tell us "DRY the PAINTING". Most YouTuder don't tell us the drying times. Also I noticed you work left to right, not drirting your hand. Good works, keep going strong dear. Ken
Thank you! I felt it was important to introduce this, because so many forget the importance of drying their paintings. It took me a while to figure out painting from right to left! It prevents unnecessary smudging!
This is beautiful and inspiring ! I think I will make a template with holes of different sizes out of a 3 x 5 card and give this technique a try. Thank you so much !

Well I tried this, and was quite pleased with the results. You are so inspiring, and your compositions are usually, (for a beginner like me) achievable. Yay
Hi Karen: Your paintings are loaded with techniques and your tutorials are so helpful. I would have never figured out how to do that background. You are so inspiring! I even ordered a new watercolor set that’ll be delivered today. Can’t wait to try this.
Lovely detailed video Karen so inspirational how you achieve amazing images colours depth in what looked plain but as always brilliant effect and result Karen, enjoyable to explore myself soon as its showing another way to create amazing pictures. Thanks greatly appreciated stay safe and healthy
This is a wonderful tutorial I learned so much and wi give it a go! Please can you review how you used the masking fluid to create the daisies? thank you
I masked out the daisies and painted the green washes over the top and the masking fluid protects the white paper. Once the painting is dried, just remove the masking fluid and paint the centres of the daises. You may find this masking tutorial helpful: th-cam.com/video/p44udLKnQ6w/w-d-xo.html
Hi Karen. Absolutely gorgeous! Love the out of focus background. Looks so easy to do. Must hunt around for a stencil with round holes lol. I'll definitely give it a go. Thank you for yet another great video. Francie from NZ 💖
Thank you Francie, so pleased you liked this out of focus background using the fun Bokeh technique! Good luck finding the stencil... I bought mine from Amazon :)
This is a fabulous demo, but I missed hearing you say, "So, shall we get started?" and "Bye for now." Also, I will now always think of daisies when I hear Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. At first, I thought what a sad choice of music for daisies, but as the painting demonstration progressed, the choice of music seemed absolutely appropriate. At first glance, daisies are white, bright and cheery flowers but as this bokeh tutorial illustrates, it's the deep, moody shadows that make daisies glow with joy.
Thank you Jacqueline. I am using the Black Velvet Brushes by Silver Brush size 6 & 14: www.jacksonsart.com/silver-brush-black-velvet-squirrel-risslon-brush-series-3000s-round-size-10?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=51ef186e18dc00c2d31982567235c559. I've watched several of your videos with this technique. I really like this one, especially because I like daisies. I don't know if this is totally awkward to ask, but I've been thinking about making some smaller paintings/cards/bookmarks so that I can eventually try a craft show and I'm curious about pricing. I don't see much info and I don't want to put you on the spot. If I were to make 5x7 (approx) sized watercolor paintings or cards, I'm wondering what would be a reasonable price to ask. Of course it depends on whether or not I can paint well. I've done some small paintings and got some sincere feedback that I should try to start a side business.
Thanks for your comment and question Elizabeth.... So pleased you like this tutorial. I think your idea of painting some cards and smaller paintings is wonderful. As for pricing very tricky... I would go to the places that you are thinking of selling your work and see what sort of pricing people are charging. It has been a while since I have done this so not sure myself. If you are thinking of selling online, you can check to see what others are doing ... Etsy is a great place to start with. When asked by my students this question... when starting out, it is just nice to cover expenses and get some experience. Always charge more for something you love and are proud of... otherwise if you sell to cheaply you will regret it.... I have experience of this!! Good luck! Let me know how you get on 😊
Karen's I just love painting flowers and this one is for me. The sunspots are genius. Would have never thought of doing that. Did you use a magic eraser sponge or just a sponge? Thanks for sharing, I love it..
Hi Mae, I bough it from Jackson's art supplies, here is the link: www.jacksonsart.com/jas-stackable-water-pot-trio?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=51ef186e18dc00c2d31982567235c559 😊
Thanks so much for introducing the bokeh effect. I did this tutorial just to try it and it turned out very well. I'm working on a landscape right now and going to try it in among the tree branches where I've lost the light. Smaller circles do you think?
I love white flowers and this video has given the confidence not try it. Am just wondering whether I could use acrylic white instead of gouache, as I don't have any gouache but a lot of acrylic white. Is there a big difference?
you could use acrylic for highlights. I wouldn’t use it on the whole flower. I find the difference between and Watercolour is acrylic is opaque. You also also get a bit of a shine on the surface. It is a good alternative to creating highlights at the end of the painting though. Hope this was helpful.
@@KarenRiceArt Thank you for that information, especially about the shine, I hadn't thought of that. Will give a try with the highlights and see how it comes out.
Love this technique! Beautiful and so fun to do! I love when you list the colors you used....you also list substitutes!
Thank you so much!

Great! I much prefer this way of lifting off rather than using masking fluid as it’s much softer 👍😊
Thanks Maggi, it really is so much softer!

What colors did you use?
Full list of all my materials and colours
Can be found in the description. I used Yellow, Grey, Red and Turquoise.

Thanks so much Darlene... I used both a magic eraser and a natural sponge. You could also use a stencil brush 😊
What type of glue u use on flowers
I am using masking fluid, it protects the white and light areas of the paper. Here is a link: th-cam.com/video/p44udLKnQ6w/w-d-xo.html
