  • @Its_Eros

    I'm gonna put this here since a few people have asked about the goaded creature:
    Jon Irenicus' ability creates a continuous effect that goads the creature by the person handing it off. It can be goaded by more than one player at a time.
    701.38c: A creature can be goaded by multiple players. Doing so creates additional combat requirements.
    Goad says that the creature has to attack, and has to attack a player other than you IF ABLE.
    But! Since it was goaded and had to attack, and was goaded by each player it could attack, then the attacks were still legal (since it wasn't able to attack a player it wasn't goaded by)

      @AlexDuWaldt ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Seems legit. Jon Irenicus' ability goads the creature for the rest of the game, in which case, using the rule you've cited, it would continue adding attacking requirements until Larry's turn where he would not be able to attack anyone. How interesting, in which case Lynch would have not taken the 10 from Larry attacking. Also, good on Larry to know that the white background would not give Jon Irenicus double strike because it uses the word Own not Control.

    • @Its_Eros
      @Its_Eros ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@AlexDuWaldt It doesn't matter that Larry hadn't goaded it yet since he was the one attacking. It had to attack, everyone that Larry could attack had goaded it, so he was able to attack any of them since there were no non-goading player eligible to be attacked.

      @atk9989 ปีที่แล้ว

      When Sean made the offer he specified John returning it at the end of his turn John agreed to the deal but never made any changes to the deal so yes it was a betrayal. @@IHateYourDeck Yeah this ONLY works because you chose to be cool about it, and it did make for an entertaining game, so I don't even blame you. I just hope other people don't incorporate this kind of play in their playgroups.
      I'm all about making deals with technicalities like "If you let me hit you for 2 damage I won't attack you for the next two turns (But I'll combo off on my turn and kill you with noncommander damage)" or "If you let me draw from this Rhystic Study trigger then I won't target your commander with any removal (but I'll cast Blasphemous Act)."
      But this is something else entirely. This is "If you give that to me then I'll give it back to Lynch (ha ha, i didn't say when! i'll give it to Larry instead, and then when I get it back I'll kill you with it) which is not the same thing as my first two examples. Like, at all. This isn't cleverly wording a deal, this is being shitty and breaking the deal and using really dubious logic to justify it.
      Again, I like how you handled it, but I also hope people don't take this as an example of acceptable dealbreaking.

    Gifting his commander is the better play regardless, since it's goaded for the rest of the game, every other player that gifts it, can't attack him with it, and the more players who acquire it, makes them also immune to the damage, because the goad counts for each player who gifts him, not just Lynch. Makes for some interesting plays, and if he ran bounce cards, he could always bounce the commander back to his hand if anyone board wipes or refuses the deal. It's a rather clever way to bypass a lot of problems, and when bounced, it would reset the goads on it.

      So, Goad says 2 things:
      1. The creature has to attack each combat if able
      2. The creature can't attack whoever goaded it, if able
      Those two steps are looked at in that order. First it checks if it can attack (is it untapped? Does it have any effects that directly say it can't attack?), and in this case, there was nothing stopping it from being a legal attacker. As a result, the condition of "has to attack" will be enforced.
      Then, you look at who it can attack. In this case, all opponents have goaded the creature. As a result in each check of it being goaded, it's not able to attack either of the other opponents. So in all 3 goads, the 2nd condition is unable to be met, so the 2nd condition doesn't apply.
      Basically, when each goad at that point just says "It can attack, so it has to attack. It can't attack my opponents, so it can attack me". But since that's the perspective from all 3 opponents, the result is that it can attack any of them

    Saw Larry's deck and wanted to do something similar that steals commanders only to research back grounds and they affect commanders you own, not commanders you control so Lynch should have taken less from fis own commander.
    Also not a judge, but goaf doesn't prevent a creature from attacking whomever goaded it, it just forces it to attack elsewhere if it can, once it can't attack elsewhere (because there are no other players, or because it is goaded by everyone it can attack anyone). Even if unintentionally they played Goaded correctly.

    That's some complicated goading situation.
    701.38c A creature can be goaded by multiple players. Doing so creates additional combat requirements.
    To me that sounds like it could attack anyone again after it went all the way around, since it needs to attack another player if able. It wasn't able, due to goading, which opened it up again to attack anyone. My interpretation, though. I'm not a judge 🤷

      @MrReaperHand ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, goad still has the idea you cannot attack the player goaded by. Since the goad is permanent as it never left the field. As it got passed around the first pass was it cannot attack Lynch when under Seans control. It could not attack Sean or Larry under John's control. It could not attack John under Larry's control. I think that would all be there. So under Sean it could attack Larry or John. Under Sean it could ONLY attack Lynch. Under Larry it could attack Lynch or Sean. Under Lynch it goes back into his deck for another game...😂
      I think that is how it would work, but not sure as I have never seen a situation like this. If able still doesn't beat out the fact it cannot target the one that goaded it.

      @@MrReaperHand goad doesn't wear off when it's passed though. So it was actually goaded by multiple people at the same time.

    Yes, Jon was goaded. Since everyone had gifted him means there was no one he could attack. Yet Jon must attack making everyone targetable.
