Braille Glove - A Communication and Translation Device for the Deaf-blind

Neglected communities like the deaf-blind are isolated from most forms of communication. Our project introduces a novel system of interaction to support the communication and hence enhance the independence of deaf-blind individuals. It includes a smart glove that translates the Braille alphabet, which is used almost universally by the literate deaf-blind population, into text and vice-versa. We present the initial prototype which enables the user to compose messages via capacitive touch sensors placed on the palm of the glove, which are transmitted wirelessly as text to the receiving PC/mobile phone. Initiated by small vibrating motors located on the back of the glove, tactile feedback patterns allow the wearer to perceive incoming regular text messages (english) in Braille. Hence, this wearable haptic communication device leverages the simplicity of Braille and its almost universal familiarity to enable deafblind persons to communicate effectively with not just other deafblind or Braille taught people but also with the larger layperson population of the world.
Our system is integrated with an app we built to exchange these translated messages with remote contacts via SMS, hence enabling the deaf-bind person to reach out to a much wider social circle than was possible before.
