My sign language teacher is the same way. She has to use expressions to match what the person is saying in order to convey a message accurately. So this woman is doing exactly what she is supposed to.

The way I talk, is basically how I sign. Because of my Autism diagnoses, I sound monotone like already. But in ASL, with the facial expressions, I guess it can be kind of the same thing. I don't think deaf people call it monotone. I think they would have a harder time trying to understand what we are talking about and if we are happy or sad in the story or situation we are talking about. I'm an advanced ASL user, still learning. Not fluent but able to keep up a conversation with deaf people. I want to conclude by saying... Deaf people do NOT want us to feel sorry for them. They are living good lives. I have a deaf oral friend and she is an amazing person. She decided to learn Japanese. She gave it a shot but just could not continue with the instructor she was learning from. Deaf people are human. Deafness is not a disability. It just means that said person can't hear. In addition, there are different levels of deafness. That's why you may see some people wear hearing aids or coheacler (not sure how you spell it) implants. But just because you see them wearing them does not mean they can suddenly hear. It can only help them hear certain sounds. It's different for each deaf person so I cannot explain what wearing some are like or what exact sounds they can hear. Please don't feel sorry for deaf people. They are happy with who they are and they have adapted to live they way the can live in this world like every one of us, hearing, deaf, disability, neurological, etc. WE ARE ALL HUMAN. LOVE ONE ANOTHER. NO HATE.
You can really tell she’s well rounded in deaf communication - im deaf - i use lipreading - her diction, pronunciation - the way she wraps her lips around words is amazing - i really like her
Having so many family members who are deaf must give her a lot of understanding of subtleties other hearing people would miss. Glad that the city works with someone deaf viewers like. I know that's not always the case.

I think the surprise over her expressiveness results from seeing interpreters that are not expressive enough. In other broadcasts I've seen, the interpreters signed like robots, just the words without tone. That led to public misperception of the language. I admittedly was surprised the first time I saw a dead family signing, that there was so much more than hand movements. I had never seen that with a TV interpreter. Some interpreters purposely try not to be expressive because tone can be subjective. Two people can hear the same phrase, and one person thinks the guy sounded sad, but the other thinks the guy sounded tired. Or sometimes a person will say something sarcastically, but not everyone will interpret it sarcastically. Professional interpreters sometimes worry that they'll communicate tone in a way that the speaker didn't intend, so they stay on the "safe" side by sticking to communicating just the words. I can see how an interpreter might communicate the wrong tone, but not communicating any tone is also misleading. It's a difficult balance to strike.
I've been around interpreters since the mid-eighties, and I have never spoken to one or worked with one who tries to "stay on the safe side" - I don't know if you have had different experiences than I have, or if you are just making this up, but the interpreter's responsibililty is to the Deaf client, and to expressing the message as closely to the original intent as possible. Period. It's called "interpreting" for a reason. Sometimes you get it wrong, or partially wrong, or a little wrong...and sometimes you have to "erase" and go back and fix it!! But you don't interpret in a 'monotone' when the Hearing speaker is fired up just to "stay on the safe side". Good Grief!!!

I honestly just think it's a common ignorance over how sign language works in practice. Hearing people are fascinated by it, and sometimes learn some simple signs, but it's not common for them to see full on conversations in sign. If they did, they would see that the facial expressions are part of it.
This comment was made 6 years ago. I was an interpreter for 25 years, and taught ASL at a public high school for 10. The comment has gotten tons of replies, ranging from agreement, to calling me all kinds of names. Some even said I was “being too serious”. The name calling is ridiculous and juvenile. In 6 years I still see lack of understanding about ASL, and that’s normal, nobody knows everything. But the difference 5 years later is the raw and rude meanness in comments. Goofy16girl787 You should acknowledge what people are laughing at. Look closely at the video. Observe the grim, solemn, dead pan expression and monotone voice of the politician. Then contrast that with the warm, vibrant, dramatic gestures and facial expressions of the translator. It's funny as hell. It has nothing to do with degrading, disrespecting, or ridiculing her. She and her movements are damn cute. She's got a wholesome countenance about herself that remains 180 degrees from that of the politician. Yet they're saying the same thing. That's really all it's about.
The politician can get away with more monotonous expressions and vocal tone because he's talking to hearing people and most hearing people can understand tone of voice, so they don't need to rely on facial cues. To someone deaf, however, every voice is the same and they can't tell the difference between tones without facial expressions. This is why facial expressions are every bit as important when signing as the signing itself is. As a hearing person, I understand how what the interpreter is saying could be "funny" or "cute," but as someone who doesn't understand vocal tone as well as most people and relies more on what a person's face is "saying," I understand the other side, too: it sounds like you and others who're saying it's "funny" are making fun of another community's speech and that's not cool. I get it's unintentional and you and the others don't mean to offend, but it is.

This lady us genuine and legit. She really wants to convey to the hearing impaired. In her interview, she deflected all the attention she was receiving. Instead, she forwards of it to the deaf community.
I don't think they viewed it negatively. If anything it brought awareness. I lost my hearing and am learning Sign. I loved this story but it came across as positive
People are being so stupid here. Like "WHY was she so expressive?" "why is she being so dramatic?" Jesus christ, it's SIGN LANGUAGE. Sign language is composed of using not only the hands in shapes, in different locations, but you must use your face to convey meaning and tone. Some of the people who use ASL are completely deaf and have no way of hearnig intonation from the speaker. The expression on the face of the interpreter conveys that tone and gives the signs meaning. The feature on SNL is just rude and shows how terribly ignorant people are if they think sign language is funny.
The reporter isn't asking those questions for herself; she's asking so that the person being addressed will speak of it. That's what reporters do. And there's always some dummkopf calling the reporter out.
As a sign language interpreter, I thank you for taking the time to understand what we do and why we do it. It takes a lot of work to become as skilled as Lydia has become, and I'm sure she is the model for many sign language users, Deaf, hearing, and hard of hearing alike.
i don't do sign language but her expressions are on point! if the person talking said "I'm so happy" she should express it as happy too and not sad. Give this awesome woman a raise!
The photo of her side by side with the mayor both with their palms out just shows you how in tune she has to be to do her job. Almost channeling the person she’s listening to. Just incredible, bravo! During the virus briefings several days ago, I believe also in NYC, there was another interpreter I noticed who was very expressive as well, and I really found he and his motions and expressiveness quite mesmerizing. The whole amazement at her expressiveness and not understanding why it looks the way it does and thinking it is special in some way feels so condescending honestly and just shows how oblivious we are to the deaf community of the country and world whose elbows we rub every day without knowing it. Most deaf people who speak exclusively in sign every day are not gonna be looked at with surprise for how expressive they are, cause that's just how they talk if they want to speak normally in the same way that ALL of us are expressive when we speak out loud... and thinking that the sign for wave is weird or funny looking and wondering "what's up with that" is just...so stupid. It's literally the sign for wave, and the person used that word, so she translated it. That's why she did it. What else would be the reason?? This is what ASL looks like. 🤦🏻♀️
I believe that there was someone in South Africa passing themselves off as a sign-language interpreter and doing stuff on TV for the government, but it was all made-up nonsense. Just shows what you can get away with if you appear confident in what you do and those you're addressing don't know any better. Those who hired him probably had no knowledge of sign language themselves and so wouldn't know the difference between real signs and well-crafted garbage.
I think she is phenomenal at what she does, in addition to being young and beautiful. More power to her! Hopefully her work will inspire more hearing people to learn sign language to make this world a more equitable place.
Facial expression is essential for ASL! Your face conveys not only the type of statement you’re making, but also conveys the mood in which is should be taken. The eyebrows, mouth morphemes, as well as the directions in which you sign all matter! American Sign Language is signed to those who are deaf or hard of hearing, they can’t hear someone’s tone! That’s why ASL is a VISUAL language!!!

Great sign-language interpreter. I myself am an interpreter from English to Portuguese (and sometimes the other way round), but we're told to be practically invisible. She makes her interpretation a show on its own. Congrats!
For those who may be wondering what happened to her. She decided to step down from interpreting for the city and decided to open her own interpreting company. Since her name is Lydia Callis her company is called LC Interpreting Services or LCIS. Go Google it and you will see what she's doing now. Pretty cool. Good for her.

I'm (hearing) watching this from the uk and am learning British sign language - I did not know this happened until I watched this and am slightly appalled about peoples reaction. I know that there is not always a lot of deaf awareness -but this seems like a serious piss take. even when the reporter is asking her 'why so expressive'
I fucking love when she really starts getting into and starts closing her eyes while she signs, or the faces she makes while she does it! she seems genuinely passionate and very good at her job!
I took sign language when I was in the 5th grade at St Francis De Sales. Maybe that's y I'm so animated and full of expression whenever I speak. Everyone swears I'm so happy lol

The face is really important to ASL. Did you know that raising of the eyebrows represents a question and there are many other examples. I failed other language classes but because ASL is a visual language I did very well. As a matter of fact in eighth grade I took Spanish. I would have had a five percent grade for the class but the teacher said if I showed up to before school, after school, and during school tutoring she would pass me. At the time I did the math and a five percent meant that I got one question right on one test. We did a play in Spanish class. I was suppose to asked how much are the bananas instead I said take off your pants and give them to me. I did way better at ASL. The funniest thing I said in ASL was yes I would jump off the boat and die In response to my professors question in role playing.
As a deaf person that uses interpreters I appreciate interpreters that excel in helping deaf persons as myself fully experience the moment as if we are not hearing impaired and are actually hearing every word , sound effects ourselves without assistance.
I took ASL for 3 years in high school and it left a bad taste in my mouth. It has nothing to do with the Deaf Community, but with my instructor and the atmosphere of her classroom. She favored any and all students who were Deaf in her class (even when they were there just to skip their actual scheduled class), and to any students who had Deaf parents/siblings. Those of us who weren’t the best (I was extremely shy and didn’t use facial expression - and my sign language was basic) felt the same. On numerous occasions one of the Deaf students would openly mock us and even laugh during our presentation. I had to take the class because I was an out of zone student, but needless to say I tried. There were also some videos of a Deaf couple that would notoriously prank each other until one day the husband uploaded two videos as to why hearing people were not as good as the Deaf Community. There are a few bad apples out there, but as a whole I know it’s just a few out of the many inclusive people.
Bottom line - Lydia Callis is, and was, probably the hottest looking signer any of us have ever seen on TV. Not to take away from her talent and signing skills. But, Lydia was a cutie pie. And that's what caught every guy's attention - including mine. I wonder what she's doing these days. I miss watching her sign.

Well signing makes it very hard to convey "tone", it's the issue with typing and texting, so we invented emojis. The facial expressions should be the same thing. It helps with convey tone and intention. I could be wrong.
facial expressions and how you sign ARE the tone of voice -pretty easy to convey in sign language when you get over the hearing face stiffness and lack of expression.

That was bad reporting but areas where the highest cause of deafness is genetics(compared to injury or sickness) will have a higher overall number of deaf people than other areas

I guess I like to view the SNL skit as mocking the hearing community's reaction to Lydia Callis. Not to make fun of ASL and Deaf culture, but because people randomly freaked out about it. And yes, I come from a deaf family. That was just our opinion on it. We thought the skit was funny. Especially the sign for ‘Obama’ 😆
They are acting like this is a good deed for the “poooooor unfooortunate” Deaf people who are no different from hearing people... hearing people just happen to be the majority. Deaf people should have equal access to their LANGUAGE and this video does poorly to portray that. One reason? Though it has a few. My dad is dead and my wife's dad was deaf. She knows sign language and I don't know it. But when my dad and her talk in sign it always look so passionate. Very expressive trying to communicate with one another
I LOVE her response. There is so much ignorance around dead, HOH communication, and how ASL works. She did not owe such a graceful response to all the ignorant comments but the fact that she did respond so patiently and educated people was really helpful to spreading awareness. We don't see interpreters all that often so when there's not only an ASL interpreter but she's doing it really well and professionally, it looks funny to a lot of people. It doesn't excuse the ignorance but it's really good to see someone helping so much to solve the problem.
My brother has been deaf since he was two years old due to the German measles back in the 60's and today; and today he is 57, but all I remember growing up was how expressive he was when signing. I also remembered him trying to use words and speaking his deaf tone voice and wondered why he wasn't quiet with his signing. I was a child back then, but I used to be so embarrassed when he would get excited and try and to use voice along with those extreme facial expressions. I was wondering do hearing abled people who learn ASL use all of these expressions when signing or is it only the ones who are deaf from birth or born to deaf parents?

I can’t believe the ignorance and disrespect shown in 90% of the comments. ASL is an actual language, and facial expressions are literally part of it. I teach ASL as a foreign language, at a high school. The kids assume it will be easier than Spanish. It's not. Deaf people do everything and anything hearing people do; the only thing they can't do is hear, which means sometimes doing things a little differently to make up for lack of hearing sounds. Their brains are just fine -- if ASL is a person's first language, English will be his/her second language. To interpret requires being fluent in the two languages you are going to/from. Lydia is a professional at what she does. People wouldn't be making a fuss if she was speaking Spanish to interpret what Bloomberg says. Grow up and get educated, people.

Goofy16girl787 You should acknowledge what people are laughing at. Look closely at the video. Observe the grim, solemn, dead pan expression and monotone voice of the politician. Then contrast that with the warm, vibrant, dramatic gestures and facial expressions of the translator. It's funny as hell.
It has nothing to do with degrading, disrespecting, or ridiculing her. She and her movements are damn cute. She's got a wholesome countenance about herself that remains 180 degrees from that of the politician. Yet they're saying the same thing.
That's really all it's about.
The politician can get away with more monotonous expressions and vocal tone because he's talking to hearing people and most hearing people can understand tone of voice, so they don't need to rely on facial cues. To someone deaf, however, every voice is the same and they can't tell the difference between tones without facial expressions. This is why facial expressions are every bit as important when signing as the signing itself is. As a hearing person, I understand how what the interpreter is saying could be "funny" or "cute," but as someone who doesn't understand vocal tone as well as most people and relies more on what a person's face is "saying," I understand the other side, too: it sounds like you and others who're saying it's "funny" are making fun of another community's speech and that's not cool. I get it's unintentional and you and the others don't mean to offend, but it is.

People are being so stupid here. Like "WHY was she so expressive?" "why is she being so dramatic?" Jesus christ, it's SIGN LANGUAGE. Sign language is composed of using not only the hands in shapes, in different locations, but you must use your face to convey meaning and tone. Some of the people who use ASL are completely deaf and have no way of hearnig intonation from the speaker. The expression on the face of the interpreter conveys that tone and gives the signs meaning.
The feature on SNL is just rude and shows how terribly ignorant people are if they think sign language is funny.

The reporter isn't asking those questions for herself; she's asking so that the person being addressed will speak of it. That's what reporters do. And there's always some dummkopf calling the reporter out.
"Expressive sign language" is redundant. Expressions in ASL are like accents in spoken language, it's a natural part of it.

As a sign language interpreter, I thank you for taking the time to understand what we do and why we do it. It takes a lot of work to become as skilled as Lydia has become, and I'm sure she is the model for many sign language users, Deaf, hearing, and hard of hearing alike.

During the virus briefings several days ago, I believe also in NYC, there was another interpreter I noticed who was very expressive as well, and I really found he and his motions and expressiveness quite mesmerizing. Keep up the good work!
The whole amazement at her expressiveness and not understanding why it looks the way it does and thinking it is special in some way feels so condescending honestly and just shows how oblivious we are to the deaf community of the country and world whose elbows we rub every day without knowing it. Most deaf people who speak exclusively in sign every day are not gonna be looked at with surprise for how expressive they are, cause that's just how they talk if they want to speak normally in the same way that ALL of us are expressive when we speak out loud... and thinking that the sign for wave is weird or funny looking and wondering "what's up with that" is just...so stupid. It's literally the sign for wave, and the person used that word, so she translated it. That's why she did it. What else would be the reason?? This is what ASL looks like. 🤦🏻♀️

I believe that there was someone in South Africa passing themselves off as a sign-language interpreter and doing stuff on TV for the government, but it was all made-up nonsense. Just shows what you can get away with if you appear confident in what you do and those you're addressing don't know any better. Those who hired him probably had no knowledge of sign language themselves and so wouldn't know the difference between real signs and well-crafted garbage.

Facial expression is essential for ASL! Your face conveys not only the type of statement you’re making, but also conveys the mood in which is should be taken. The eyebrows, mouth morphemes, as well as the directions in which you sign all matter! American Sign Language is signed to those who are deaf or hard of hearing, they can’t hear someone’s tone! That’s why ASL is a VISUAL language!!!

Great sign-language interpreter. I myself am an interpreter from English to Portuguese (and sometimes the other way round), but we're told to be practically invisible. She makes her interpretation a show on its own. Congrats!
For those who may be wondering what happened to her. She decided to step down from interpreting for the city and decided to open her own interpreting company. Since her name is Lydia Callis her company is called LC Interpreting Services or LCIS. Go Google it and you will see what she's doing now. Pretty cool. Good for her.

I'm (hearing) watching this from the uk and am learning British sign language - I did not know this happened until I watched this and am slightly appalled about peoples reaction. I know that there is not always a lot of deaf awareness -but this seems like a serious piss take. even when the reporter is asking her 'why so expressive'
I fucking love when she really starts getting into and starts closing her eyes while she signs, or the faces she makes while she does it! she seems genuinely passionate and very good at her job!

I took sign language when I was in the 5th grade at St Francis De Sales. Maybe that's y I'm so animated and full of expression whenever I speak. Everyone swears I'm so happy lol

The face is really important to ASL. Did you know that raising of the eyebrows represents a question and there are many other examples. I failed other language classes but because ASL is a visual language I did very well.
As a matter of fact in eighth grade I took Spanish. I would have had a five percent grade for the class but the teacher said if I showed up to before school, after school, and during school tutoring she would pass me. At the time I did the math and a five percent meant that I got one question right on one test. We did a play in Spanish class. I was suppose to asked how much are the bananas instead I said take off your pants and give them to me. I did way better at ASL. The funniest thing I said in ASL was yes I would jump off the boat and die In response to my professors question in role playing.

I grew up with aunts that are deaf and mute and when they sign language they are VERY expressive with their faces/ gestures
As a deaf person that uses interpreters I appreciate interpreters that excel in helping deaf persons as myself fully experience the moment as if we are not hearing impaired and are actually hearing every word , sound effects ourselves without assistance.
I took ASL for 3 years in high school and it left a bad taste in my mouth. It has nothing to do with the Deaf Community, but with my instructor and the atmosphere of her classroom.
She favored any and all students who were Deaf in her class (even when they were there just to skip their actual scheduled class), and to any students who had Deaf parents/siblings.
Those of us who weren’t the best (I was extremely shy and didn’t use facial expression - and my sign language was basic) felt the same. On numerous occasions one of the Deaf students would openly mock us and even laugh during our presentation.
I had to take the class because I was an out of zone student, but needless to say I tried. There were also some videos of a Deaf couple that would notoriously prank each other until one day the husband uploaded two videos as to why hearing people were not as good as the Deaf Community. There are a few bad apples out there, but as a whole I know it’s just a few out of the many inclusive people.

Bottom line - Lydia Callis is, and was, probably the hottest looking signer any of us have ever seen on TV. Not to take away from her talent and signing skills. But, Lydia was a cutie pie. And that's what caught every guy's attention - including mine. I wonder what she's doing these days. I miss watching her sign.

You have to be expressive when signing, it makes a difference with how you are saying something.
Well signing makes it very hard to convey "tone", it's the issue with typing and texting, so we invented emojis. The facial expressions should be the same thing. It helps with convey tone and intention.

facial expressions and how you sign ARE the tone of voice -pretty easy to convey in sign language when you get over the hearing face stiffness and lack of expression.

I guess I like to view the SNL skit as mocking the hearing community's reaction to Lydia Callis. Not to make fun of ASL and Deaf culture, but because people randomly freaked out about it.

I LOVE her response. There is so much ignorance around dead, HOH communication, and how ASL works. She did not owe such a graceful response to all the ignorant comments but the fact that she did respond so patiently and educated people was really helpful to spreading awareness. We don't see interpreters all that often so when there's not only an ASL interpreter but she's doing it really well and professionally, it looks funny to a lot of people. It doesn't excuse the ignorance but it's really good to see someone helping so much to solve the problem.
My brother has been deaf since he was two years old due to the German measles back in the 60's and today; and today he is 57, but all I remember growing up was how expressive he was when signing. I also remembered him trying to use words and speaking his deaf tone voice and wondered why he wasn't quiet with his signing. I was a child back then, but I used to be so embarrassed when he would get excited and try and to use voice along with those extreme facial expressions. I was wondering do hearing abled people who learn ASL use all of these expressions when signing or is it only the ones who are deaf from birth or born to deaf parents?
