Toei seemed to misunderstand the decisions of the VN. There's character in him holding back from slapping. And by having her drop the cat by accident, her agency and responsibility are taken away. Kyoto Animation more faithfully portrays the scene and includes important lines that are essential to understanding the message of the scene.
it's crazy how amazing the audio-visual storytelling and cinematography is handled in the 2006 adaptation; it captures the intent of the original novel while still being visually impressive. the loss of the soundtrack when Makoto drops piro adds so much to the scene. Massive credit to Tatsuya Ishihara, longtime kyoani director. The 06 adaptation in general is one of the best kyoani productions.

Yeah they already pretty much ruined the scene by having her drop Piro on accident, but then they made it even worse by him actually hitting her

Tatsuya Ishihara is GOAT. He took many great stories and turned them into masterpiece anime adaptations
