I filmed a video of my entire boot making class and am almost finished editing it. The next video will be measuring feet and choosing/fitting a last. I'll let you know when it's available.
I'm not the best person to ask about this, as I rarely ever make a boot to accommodate an insole. If it were me, I'd measure the foot without the arch support and with the arch support. I'd fit the last to the foot measurements, then add the arch support, remeasure, and compare to the measurements taken with the support.
How would you adjust for flat feet? I'm 6'2" and weigh around 230 with size 8 1/2 feet. I have a hard time keeping my stirrups when a horse blows up because of it.
Here's a question I'm just not seeing an answer to in any video -- since the foot curves under, are you tracing where the foot hits the floor, with the pencil sort of stuck under the foot, or do you have the pencil completely vertical going around the foot? For instance, if the pencil was vertical the upper part of my heel would push that measurement out quite a bit, but if i traced where the foot actually hit the floor it would give a smaller size. Just can't seem to figure this one out, and want to be as accurate as possible.
I’ve run into people here in MO who say “mayzure.” She probably interacts with lots of people who have southwestern regional accents. I noticed at several points in the video that the accent flattens out a bit. It could be she has grown used to hiding it or it’s a consciously or unconsciously assumed accent due to her location. Whatever the case, I enjoyed the video and her personality.
Tiffany, The place where I bought the pedigraph stopped carrying them, and I couldn't find anyone else who sold them. Pedigraphs were one of the first products I started carrying when I started my supply business. There may be other US sources for pedigraphs but I'm not aware of them. My website is www.sorrellnotionsandfindings.com
That's true, but in the US lasts are graded in eighths of an inch, so it's helpful to also measure feet the same way to compare to last charts when choosing size and width. I personally measure at all points both ways. It's a good way to confirm that I measured correctly.
Yup. We even give new immigrants a few pairs at their naturalization ceremony to officially welcome them. It's a law that you have to wear them at least half the time.
Thank you so much for sharing this video and all your knowledge!

Please put it together like a playlist from first to last. Fixing to start gathering up stuff to make myself some boots that really fit!
Did ye aye?
I too would like to see how these measurements are used to chose/modify the last.
Thanks for share your methode! :)
What about using a Brannock device to determine the size of the last?
Thank you for this! Wonderful!
Thanks for posting
I use a 3/4 length arch support in my shoes. Should I take measurements with this arch support since I will need to wear it inside the boots?

where did you buy the pedograph?

Metric would be more accurate i belive.

Do all Americans wear "white socks"?
Alf,
Yes, they're certainly common here. :)
Is that not a global thing?
Alf Åström no

Elvis wore white socks, with black pants and black shoes.
I do understand that there is an 'a' in measurement, but do you not understand it is silent?
