This is kinda wasteful. Plant a winter-growing legume with this like winter peas hairy vetch and any type of clover. Fixation balansa is a good clover. Plant them right after emergence just broadcast.
We have our cows on corn all winter...but we combine it first...this year the field is under 16 inches of snow. They still dig around and find cobs and piles where we stopped to unload. It's a great mix if you shred hay out on the field and thus don't have much manure to spread. Frost goes deep and breaks up the compaction layer.
