Unselfish love of the highest order, as commented below. All three. This film remains my favorite for this quality, moving me to tears throughout. The three actors are divine, their faces sublime with emotion contained or expressed. It has actually inspired my own long relationship, acknowledging in these times of female independence that I cannot live happily without my beloved, how beautiful life is with him, how fortunate we are. The image for women was so strong and classy back then. Beauty was an accessory to character, and character was what mattered. The image we promote of women now is sort of trashy by comparison. I was born too late! 😢
Agreed, the real beauty shined with very little, or no makeup whatsoever ! This actress, Rita Hayworth, Joan Fontaine, Carol Lombard, Vivian Lee, Thelma Todd, Fay Wray, Joan Blondell, Francis Dee, Ida Lupino, Carol Landis and so many others. Pure charm and deep beauty. And if being a lady means letting others suffer the perils of war while I comfy and safe at home not knowing for years - I guess I'm not a lady.
Nice little story with a great thread of morality and well produced considering it was 1935. Amazing to think they would have had no idea that WWII was just around the corner.
No, I think England was aware and nervous about what was happening in Europe and Germany. Didn't Hitler come to power in 1933? By 1936, he was bold enough to bomb civilians in Guernica, Spain in cooperation with Franco. I think the purpose of these movies was to get the population ready emotionally for the build up that was coming.
I loved watching this movie! They don't make movies like this anymore, where you focus on the actor's skill rather than special effects, violence, cursing and nudity. Modern Hollywood could take some lessons from these old movies! 😄👍🎬🎞️🎥
I’ve always voted Vivian Leigh as the most beautiful woman of her day in Hollywood and England and around the world! 👩🏻 But Merle Oberon is either a very close second, if not a tie! Both actresses were so talented as well, and both began receiving starring roles in film approximately the same time.....Oberon in 1933 (“The Private Life If Henry VIIII”) and Leigh receiving four small roles beginning in 1935, then her first big role in “ Fire Over England”, in 1937. I’m sure I’ve seen every film both of them have starred in! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The casting of each role in this gem of a film is perfect.....even those playing the Aunts and Grandmothers! As far as the male leads, as a woman I don’t know WHICH of the two leading men I would have chosen. 😍😍 Great story line as well. Thank you so much for posting, God bless you for your kindness. 🕊🙏😘✝️💕💜🌹👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️!!!

Nice post. For me it is definitely Vivien Leigh who is both my favorite regarding talent and beauty. There are others that might sometimes compare, but never for long... Except maybe Joan Fontaine..
If I were magically given the choice I would choose to look like Merle over Vivien however the most beautiful to me I have ever seen an actress look in a film is Dana Wynter in The invasion of the bodysnatchers. Her looks defy belief in that film.

You'll want to see this one. It's a tad melodramatic for my taste but the actors are all in top form, and altogether excellent. March,Oberon and Marshall are superb as always. I wish the print was better, but I'd rather have it a little fuzzy than not at all. I'd like to say it doesn't matter but the truth is an excellent print makes all the difference. First, the funny stuff: the sound effects guys back then were probably dying to use a new sound- high-pitched 'outer space' sound of the falling bombs - given the cast, I wonder how it made it into a good film. At 11:41, the trees (Topiaries) in the background look a lot like some in a Dr. Suess book, and a big tree to the right of them looks like a 6 year-old drew it. First rate acting and a good story, too.
That’s how my husband and I first married , I was 18 and he was 24 , we have been faithfully happy and in love it’s been 54 years , 5 months , since then , we had many difficulties, to get through , but it can be done.
A classic tearjerker - a bit too sentimental for my taste (I prefer Bette Davis in DARK VICTORY). But a great team, from the three main actors to director Franklin, screenwriter Hellmann, Gregg Toland's cinematography, Alfred Newman's score, and Richard Day's Oscar winning art direction. The young man who interrupts the meeting and later apologizes to March looked awfully familiar. That's Douglas Walton, who although never an A list actor had significant roles in a number of major films of the 30 and 40s, including CAVALCADE (an early Best Picture winner), THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (as Percy Shelley), MARY OF SCOTLAND, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, NORTHWEST PASSAGE, SCARFACE, THE LETTER, MURDER MY SWEET, and THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY.
Ha ha somehow I bumped the mouse. They had come home on leave, went back to the front, and 30 seconds later Merle and her Grandma were preparing for them to knock on the door, as they had returned from war. I thought, " Wow they sure speeding through this. Then 15 minutes later it's over.
