I agree the slaughterhouse and the port would have factored into the spike in attacks. I know one thing though for definite, I would NEVER get into the sea especially around Recife!! Great work Christian! I love Shark Bytes
I'm from Recife, bornt and live here, all my childhood going to this beach and i still go. I'm surprised with your video. Really well done 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 These attacks are more in Piedade beach, in front of the curch area. The other areas even with no coral reef are a little safe. But i prefer go to south coast of Pernambuco state (Porto de Galinhas, Muro alto, Carneiros, Tamandare, Calhetas, Gaibu...) no attacks there. And the girl that you said she died, she was from Brazil. Thank you for the video
Boa Viagem inteira até o Paiva não é segura. Tem mais ataques na área da Igreja, mas com certeza haveria muitos em outras áreas se as pessoas continuassem a nadar lá.
Another awesome video Kris. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈 Glad to see SHARK BYTES popping up in my notifications again. I agree with your reasoning 100%. Everything adds up. I also agree that the majority of these shark bites were bull sharks. When you said that Recife was bordered by 2 rivers, I immediately thought "bull sharks". I heard about a couple of these attacks when Tracking Sharks did videos on a couple of them.
There is also a great number of tiger shark sightings in Recife, they kinda follow the ships in and out the ports. Could be either or both species the responsible for the attacks.
@@joaomarcosjunqueira4965I know. And, it could be either tiger sharks or bull sharks. But with the area being bordered by 2 major rivers, my first suspect would be bull sharks.
@@sharks3653 Both species have been clearly identified in attacks there. So, it's not one or the other but like off Reunion Island both species are responsible. And like there probably weighted more in balance of Bull shark attacks.
I'm from Recife and still live here. Man, congratilations on the approach, it was perfect. I surfed in Boa Viagem as a child/preteen and I lived this whole transition, I saw the first attacks happening and the struggle that was and still is to change people's behavior towards the sea. We surfers were very stubborn at first, we didn't want to lose our spot , which was practically in front of our houses. There was a whole surf culture in the city, with many local stores and big brands, people walking with boards all over the coast. It was hard to see and to let it all go because of the growing attacks in beach, but there was no way, the attacks were more and more frequent, there was no longer any way to deny the danger. In the end, as expected, this whole beautiful surf scene ended up dying in the city, but unfortunately the attacks have not stopped, because we still have a lot of bathers and tourists who, believe me, even with all this history and news, even with all the warning signs, they still swim beyond the coral reefs. As you perfect put it, its just too many people close to the beach. Here, nowadays, it is practically a mathematical certainty, if you venture into deeper waters or even above your waist, you will be attacked. It's no joke. Well, once again I want to congratulate you, you covered all the topics and talked about everything exactly how it happened, the reasons debated and the actions taken, besides adding simple concepts like "too many people living too close to danger" that many times no one thinks about it, and we often see news that confuse the facts and do not correctly inform how things happend, they don't even mention that it was a beach with surf culture before the attacks.
I remember swimming at Boa Viagem beach as a child and teenager with no fear at all of a shark attack. But yes, it was after the construction of the port of Suape to the South of Recife that all that changed. Reportedly, that destroyed the sharks' source of food and they migrated North. Thanks for the detailed video and the additional information. I have no idea either how this situation will evolve... 😕
I'm from Recife. I surfed bodyboard in the 90s. A person was attacked by a shark 3 meters from me at the time. The worst attacks occur on Piedade beach. The first documented case occurred in 1942 in front of the Piedade Church. A friar was on vacation and came to Recife to relax. He went to take a shower and immediately after entering the water, he was bitten. Sharks always attacked. Before the construction of the port of Suape, they were already biting
Great video! Just a small correction, that shark attack victim whose attack was recorded was actually Brazilian from the state of Sao Paulo, further south .
Me having watched this channel for a while now and getting hindsight having realized how stupid I was as a teen (I am mid 30s now). I had walked out waist/chest deep, more than half the length of a very long pier out fascinated how far I could get and still walk on the bottom (being 5’3” I was impressed), with some curious seals “playing” nearby me finding it so fun to have “sea puppies” so close thinking I was safe cuz hey I am next to the pier we good right, and not understanding why I was getting yelled at to go back to shore 👀 (this was a California coast in the summer months) Yeah, I get it now, I realize how lucky I was not to have a negative shark encounter 👀
I was stationed at Ft Ord when the Monterey aquarium was first opened. The kelp beds were thick in the area. I remember how I didn't like it wrapping around my legs and would go back to land. I later watched a video at the aquarium showing that great whites stayed on the outside edge of the kelp waiting for sea lions to exit it and ambush them. There was a video of one of them even grabbing a sea lion off of a rock at the edge of shore.
11:36 as a Brazilian and northeastern who lives in the neighbor state to Pernambuco i can say we have the same conditions, same topography, same shark especies visiting here in Paraíba but we have the right environment, the ecosystem is balanced and there’s plenty of food. On top of that our most visited beaches have a reef barrier protecting everyone, but we still have beaches without the reef barrier and we have history of only one attack in all these years. You can easily spot sharks, dolphins and other marine life here and thankfully to this day we didn’t messed up our environment in such a way that would cause such disturbance to the animals and humans. Regardless Recife is still onde of the prettiest cities and you definitely can swim safely in neighboring states and cities like the one i live (João Pessoa in Paraíba). I was waiting for this video and absolutely loved it! p.s. You should definitely come here to see these beauties by yourself 😍
Thank you for the insightful perspective! Greetings to beautiful Brazil-everyone deserves caring, honest, and decent local governments and policies. Your comment underscores that necessity.
That clip showing one of the attacks also holds another detail that has been common across a lot of these videos: she was separated. Seems whenever we're looking at these incidents they almost always occur when people are isolated. If staying in groups was emphasized more in shark warning signs and made more common knowledge, it'd probably reduce the number of incidents remarkably
Absolutely, you’ll hear me mention this quite a lot in the shark scientist reacts to shark attack videos - safety in numbers isn’t fool proof, but it can make a difference!
She couldn't swim, she and her 3 cousins were paddling in the shallows when all three were taken out to sea by a current, the two boys scrambled back, Bruna and her other cousin were swept out, they were seconds from being rescued when the shark attacked.
@@factchecker472that makes everything even more terrifying. She got caught by the current, she is dragged to the sea and not only dealing with the panic of drowning she is also attacked by a shark and killed. Truly horrifying.
@@leodefine86 Absolutely horrifying, I completely agree with you - I guess the splashing around in panic may have helped attract the shark's attention.
Great video, taught me some new info. Thank you! I was in Recife on business twenty years ago. Beautiful city, definitely had a Miami feel. But the shark danger signs all along the beaches were jarring. I’ve always remembered those, and how strange it was to see so few people swimming on beautiful days.
Another awesome video, I had no idea. Growing up on Cape Cod and watching the great whites increase with the seal population boom during the 80’s/90’s, and then moving to Midcoast, Maine where it’s a repeat of my child/teen years with Great Whites starting to move in closer. Anxious to read Dr. Greg Skomal’s new book. Keep up the amazing videos, so happy I found this channel. 🦈🦈
A very interesting analysis! Very sad, though, that so many people have lost their lives... Irrelevant, but I also feel sad when I see skyscrapers on the beach. No respect for nature, unfortunately.
I would love a creature feature on Port Jackson Sharks! Those loveable little sea puppies are so cute and interesting, and their eggs and life histories are very cool as well. I haven't seen many horn sharks on the channel, even though they are some of the oldest shark lineages out there. Speaking of old sharks, a video on prehistoric sharks would be awesome as well. Great job on your latest video, well researched and educational as always, and good luck for the rest of the season!
Great video, Chris. I used to surf in the other spots south from Recife, Itapoama and Paiva beach, the water there was much more clear less attacks there, however you never can surf the same way. We learn ways to sat on the board keeping the feet of the water while waiting for the waves but it was too stressful. My mum put an end to it saying : no more surf for you boy "
I’m thrilled that you’re back for and the season!!! Do you know if the shark repellent bands that the lifeguards are wearing efficient? I assume studies cb have been done on them but I’d be interested in knowing your thoughts💕

Now it is impossible to swim past the coral reefs or at open areas.
I like that you went into the beach topography as a factor, not something I would have considered but makes a lot of sense as to why there's so many shark attacks there

Recife foi aos poucos sendo projetada para ataques de tubarões. Assisti uma palestra de um pessoal da Universidade que estuda essa situação lá. É trágico.
Hi, I really liked your video. I am from Recife, live in Recife and love diving in the wrecks in the region. I encourage divers to come here. Visibility (from October to April is usually amazing) at 30-50 meters around the wrecks. However, you have to take a boat for 6-10 miles (1.5 to 2.0 hours) from the shore (far from the channel that you mentioned in the video), otherwise one risks what you just explained. In the wrecks, marine life is amazing and you mostly see only nurse sharks.
Yikes, brother, excellent video but that's one place where I wouldn't swim or snorkel. The sharks there seem pretty gnarly, probably lacking in their natural food source I guess, perhaps because of over-fishing. I saw reports on Tracking Sharks that some of the attacks there have been in less than waist deep water, too.
Shark attack spikes always seem to occur when something is bringing shark in closer to shore, where people are swimming. Weather it a slaughter house, tuna packing plant, new construction, red tide, La Nina, El Nino, a heat wave, an oil spill, or any other dozens of situations, that is when you want to stay out of the water.
Can I just say I think your content is 1st class! I subscribed about 2 months ago, always loved sharks, but I’ve learned more about sharks from watching your content that I could have on discovery and various other places. You must put a lot of work in so wanted to say thanks
Yeah, we've heard of Recife, Reunion Island, False Bay, SA, and a half dozen other places you couldn't pay me to swim at. The shark attack capital of the world though is New Smyrna Beach in Florida, USA, though almost no attacks there are fatal.
been there twice early 2000s . The same things you bring up around 12:00 were what locals pointed at as the start of recife's trouble with sharks. The location of the massive port 10k to the south was where the sharks used to hang out before the 90's. Whenever the topic came up, most people were convinced there was a correlation.
Na vdd, Recife é chamado assim devido à região mais antiga da cidade, cortada pelo rio e formando uma ilha com casas antigas, não essa região de prédios à beira-mar mostrados, mas ainda assim é um exagero.
yeah it isn't a good comparison but in 1700-1800 the entire city was just the area close to the river and back then wouldn't be an nonsense comparison.
I don't want to sound like a weirdo, but recently you appeared in a dream of mine, haha. It wasn't anything too outlandish, we were just in a small rowing boat, making our way over some lakes and whenever a fish was visible next to the boat, you'd tell me the name of the species. Though at some point you went out of the boat onto an island and yelled at some kids that were destroying a tree there. (No clue why I had that dream, because I didn't watch any of your videos the few days beforehand... but thanks to you that was the first dream that wasn't a nightmare in a very long time - as in over a year )

Glad to see you finally made a video about my area! I have been living here for more then a decade, but I am originally from the Gulf of Mexico. Since I have migrated down here I have witnessed three attacks. Its a bit of a shame to say that but all of them unprovoked. The thing is a few of my fellows have this not very good mannered way of trying food they're not quite familiar with in a bite-it-first fashion. Most of us just don't go for it when we are uncertain if is a fish or a human. Anyway, we love your channel. Cheers from Recife ✌🏼🦈
Another great informative video Kris, thanks. I think I asked in the past, but I would love to hear your analysis on the sharks of Hawaii. Especially the topography of Maui Nui, the lack of Bull sharks(thankfully), Sharks of Hawaii, Whale seasons, turtle populations, tourist Galeophobia etc. We have had 1 fatality in each of the last 2 Decembers here in Maui, the Lady who was snorkelling with her husband and just recently the surfer at Pāʻia Bay. I, like many of the local Hawaiians adore sharks, even to the point of them being symbols of ancestors (‘aumākua). There is a lot of good feeling for them here, even though they do unfortunately get themselves in the news every now and then. I go to our local aquarium at least once a month to check on the female Tiger they have there. She will be released soon, she is getting a little too large for the tank, will miss her, but at the same time be so happy she is back home.

What an excellent video! I live in Recife, and you did a good description about the situation in here.
@@claudiamendesmoreira thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🦈
I have 'The Mammoth Book of Shark Attacks' and Recife appears in it a few times but the book only covers shark attacks from the 1900 and ends Jan 2013 so no data after that.
Really well done 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
These attacks are more in Piedade beach, in front of the curch area.
Happy bornt day Ricky!!

Boa Viagem inteira até o Paiva não é segura. Tem mais ataques na área da Igreja, mas com certeza haveria muitos em outras áreas se as pessoas continuassem a nadar lá.
Another awesome video Kris. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
Glad to see SHARK BYTES popping up in my notifications again.
I’m sure bulls likely make up the majority of these incidents!
@@SHARKBYTESI agree.
One of my favorite Shark Bytes videos so far! Incredibly interesting. Keep up the good work
That's the most informative breakdown on Recife I've seen! Well done!
Great to have you back Kristian! Hope you had a relaxing break
Great to be back Holly!
Me having watched this channel for a while now and getting hindsight having realized how stupid I was as a teen (I am mid 30s now). I had walked out waist/chest deep, more than half the length of a very long pier out fascinated how far I could get and still walk on the bottom (being 5’3” I was impressed), with some curious seals “playing” nearby me finding it so fun to have “sea puppies” so close thinking I was safe cuz hey I am next to the pier we good right, and not understanding why I was getting yelled at to go back to shore 👀 (this was a California coast in the summer months)
Yeah, I get it now, I realize how lucky I was not to have a negative shark encounter 👀
Seals are probably more likely to bite you.
California isn't the worst. Dont know why people were screaming at you. Maybe the seals?

Fascinating, I really love your breakdowns of the factors which can affect shark/human interactions.
🦈Always a great morning when there's a new shark bytes video ^u^ Thanks for all the wonderful content- and WOO! to the start of a new season :D
Thanks so much for supporting shark bytes!
Absolutely, there are some great beaches in Alagoas too.
I think you meant North Eastern?
Go visit Olinda, plus its Carneval, 👍🏻
Northeastern. Northwestern would be living like in Acre (Noroeste)
Thank you for the insightful perspective! Greetings to beautiful Brazil-everyone deserves caring, honest, and decent local governments and policies. Your comment underscores that necessity.
Sir SharkyMcBouncy hair! Missed you ❤! Welcome back 🎉 🍾

@SHARKBYTES it's from your videos that I learned to spot that detail, keep them coming!
Welcome back Kristian. As always a brilliant and balanced analysis. I’m looking forward to the new series.
Another Brazilian who loves your channel! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the detailed information. And thanks for starting the next season of shark bytes. We missed you. 🎉
Yes, Shark Bytes is back. Always fascinating stuff... thank you!
Education is so important. Great work with this channel.
Thanks for being back
Another awesome video, I had no idea. 🦈🦈
Yay! Great you‘re back! 🎉
This is so incredibly well explained and presented! Thank you so much for your content, much love
so glad to see shark bytes is back! i learn a lot from your videos. thank you for your time and work! all the best ~
A very interesting analysis! Very sad, though, that so many people have lost their lives... Irrelevant, but I also feel sad when I see skyscrapers on the beach. No respect for nature, unfortunately.
Love this video. Do more like it please
Wobbegong shark too
Shark Bytes back with a bang! Really interesting video, thanks Kris 🦈
yessssss i have been waiting for you to post!
We did do a video on shark repellants, could be time for a new one though!
@@SHARKBYTES That’s great - I’ll find it on your channel and watch it 😎 Thank you for your reply!
Im from Recife, living here for 46 years now. By the time i was 16 YO, saw a friend lost his leg by my side, wile surfing in Piedade beach. One bite and my friends leg was gone, just like that. Can still feel the sensation of been hunted!
That deep channel is scary as hell 😱
As always, another solid video. So informative.
My friend from Brazil says you're probably safer in the water 😂
I have heard a few things here or there...!
The streets of Brasil are still safer than an american school, though. Just saying...
@@joaomus I don't doubt that, either!
And Recife is worse than the Brazilian average. Much worse than Rio.

I really enjoy these types of videos where you look at the environment, human and other factors of a location. Very interesting!

I live an hour and a half north of Recife. We have no shark attacks on a regular basis, your information seems very accurate. Thanks.
My legs have been bumped by dozens of sharks as a life long surfer..It's a spooky feeling when they bump into you, testing you, to decide if they want to take a bite..
Maddness
I was born and raised, and I still live in Recife. Amazing video.
I went to Sri Lanka last year and o was really scared to swim in the sea but all the locals I spoke to said there where no sharks just crocodiles which again not getting in the water 😂
So my question is why ?
I swam and dived off Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, where the highlight was seeing the blacktip reef sharks. I agree it's strange there have been so few shark attacks there though.
I would rather deal with a shark than a croc.
@@dianacryerEspecially those giant saltwater crocodiles that inhabit Sri Lanka.
@@XC20248 Yes those things are kinda cool, but absolutely terrifying.
I'm from Recife. In the 80's and 90's, boa viagem beach was crowded with Surfers... And then, the shark attacks began and people no longer surf there. I remember of my father swimming far from the coast with his cousin, to the point their heads were barely visible to us in the beach. Now it is impossible to swim past the coral reefs or at open areas.
Now we need a video about the shark attacks in Mogadishu you mentioned. Searched for a video about it and found nothing really
I like that you went into the beach topography as a factor, not something I would have considered but makes a lot of sense as to why there's so many shark attacks there
Another very informative video! Thank you so much! 🦈😊
This was a pleasant surprise, I didn't know we were due new content yet!
This was a really interesting and well put together video, excellent stuff! If you were a supervillain designing the perfect shark attack hotspot, I don't think you'd need to design it much differently!
Couldn’t resist, didn’t want to be away for too long!
I remember Bruna Gobbis attack and saw the attempt rescue video. The life guards did good getting the girls in the wave runner but horrible job with Bruna after. Lifeguards carried her without putting a belt or something over her foot to stop the bleeding. They carried her up steps and she was still alive then to
Yes, agreed - no excuse for lifeguards at that particular beach not to be aware of what to do in case of shark attack.
WTF!!!!
Happy you're back and adding to my knowledge of sharks. Thanks.
Plenty of knowledge in bound!
Ooooooh...I will never go there in the first place‼️Those tall sky scraper buildings are uuuuugly‼️🤣⛹️not for this country girl 🤾💃😅
Well researched video! Super excited for a new Shark Bytes season ❤🦈😁
It’s gunna be a goodie!
Até mesmo com água pouco acima do joelho.
I’m from Recife, this was a perfect explanation. Congrats
More like nips than off than attacks off NSB, like you said no-one's died from a shark bite there.
been there twice early 2000s .
The same things you bring up around 12:00 were what locals pointed at as the start of recife's trouble with sharks. The location of the massive port 10k to the south was where the sharks used to hang out before the 90's. Whenever the topic came up, most people were convinced there was a correlation.
Very good video 😊 👍
Thanks so much!
Great video! Knew about all the factors you mentioned and completly agree with you Kris!
Good to see you again...

The first time I heard of Recife, it was in regards to workers from Compassion International rescuing children from sex trafficking.

Welcome back. Hope you had a great break
Venice of Brazil?? 😂 (seriously, have you been to Venice?) Recife is more like Grimsby with skyscrapers. What a dump. Pity the poor sharks.
You're right, but to be fair Olinda (which is still in that 12 miles) is really nice.
Really interesting vid. I love how you breakdown all the potential factors.

Well written and researched presentation, had hear about these factors with Recife before! Thank you!
I Agree with all of it Kris. Reunion Island is another bad spot.
Oh yeah, you said it at the very end....
Make sure you check that video out!
Now that is a scary beach.
