Josh, I've restored several Estwing hammers and axes with leather grips. I'm figuring it out. Nice results.

All my Estwing hammers with leather have lasted me over 35 years, and still going strong ! Quality product for sure.

Beautiful axes and hammers...I don't like to use them for fear of spoiling them, lol!!

No hammer or ax has a handle as beautiful as Estwing. Iconic.

I don't care about the beauty of the handle. I care how the axe cuts and splits, and how much vibration is transmitted to my wrists. The Estwing axe is, by far, the worst medium axe in its class, on all three points.

Thank you for showing the process. I have two 13" Estwing E32H Carpenter's Hatchets, and they are very good.

Just finishing restoring a hammer from 01/39. I decided to leave the patina on the steel but the new handle looks elegant. Another quality job!

I have wanted to purchase an Estwing hatchet 14 for a couple of years now. After seeing the production process, I believe it will be well worth the money. A trip to the local outdoors store is in order.

Go to the community tab on Alec Steeles channel and ask. Pretty wide mix of UK smiths there. Someone has to know someone.

After seeing this video and was in the market for a camping axe, I ordered off AMAZON and got the new special edition "Black" version with the leather handle. The black paint is nothing more than cheap WalMart rattle can spray paint which started coming off the day I got it! When I removed the stickers on the hatchet, the paint came off with it and i had the shiny metal finish exposed. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I really wanted this to work, so I had some spray can stripper and stripped the remaining CHEAP black paint from the hatchet and bought some Naptha to really clean and prepare the bare metal and bought some high temp QUALITY black paint and had to refinish the hatchet myself! My first ESTWING so I have not had a chance to try it out camping yet, so we will see how it cuts and holds up to real life use. Just very disappointing tp see a product that's been around for generations made with such poor quality processes!

Thx for this review of the "special edition" black model. I have one in my Amazon cart, but have held off going forward with the purchase until I find out more. Too bad Estwing can't put a solid paint job on these, since they are $20 more:/ And the black color is really visually appealing.

Grind and wire brush that crap paint off and polish it. Now you have something.

I don't care for Estwings. They are the worst for splitting, in their classes; and if the handle ever bends or crushes, you can't repair them. As for shock-absorbing, they still transmit plenty to my wrists.

Yesterday, I saw an adult Scout leader trying to split a log with an Estwing axe. the poor guy pounded and pounded and pounded and pounded and pounded; but that skinny head just would not force the halves of that log apart.

I think your comment speaks far more to skill and technique (or the lack thereof) than of the usefulness/ruggedness of their tools.
