I'm living in Tokyo with my wife, just West of Shinjuku.. The day after the mega-quake warning, we were out shopping for groceries and absolutely ALL of the rice had been bought! None of the main supermarkets had any left. The shelves were empty, with only a A4 printed message sellotaped to where the rice would normally be, explaining that due to the mega-quake threat they had run out of rice, and when they get more stock it will be limited to one bag per person! We looked all over for the much needed rice and finally we remembered that our local sake shop has a rice polishing machine and a selection of fresh rice, all with details and photos of the farms and farmers who supply each type! Luckily they still had ONE type of rice left (they usually have about eight). We excitedly requested a 5KG bag and the kind lady proceeded to weigh out and fill the machine, which whirred away spitting out freshly cleaned white rice into a nice heavy duty and rather artisanal-looking brown bag. We walked back to our home and immediately put some in the rice cooker! It was the most delicious, fresh tasting rice ever! So from now on we have vowed to only get rice from our local independent sake shop. Support the local businesses, especially when the quality and service far surpasses the chain stores! This was over a week ago, and still the local Seiyu and Summit both have no rice in stock! Kind of reminds me of the panic buying of toilet rolls back in the UK! 😂
When I see panic buying going on, I look in our larder, and see around 7 lbs of rice, flour, dry noodles, dried beans and canned food. I suspect that the same is true of everyone scurrying around for that elusive bag of rice.
@@DovidM Yea.. Back in the UK I had a substantial pantry/larder.. But now in Japan we have very limited space for storing dry foods. We weren't panic buying, simply trying to buy our regular shopping.. People panic buying sonly denies those who don't, and it's pigging annoying!
In fact, this rice panic-buying is the reason I came to this video in the first place. I just got a text from my friend in Osaka, Japan where she was talking about the rice and water being sold out at the supermarket because of the earthquake. She ended up ordering it from Amazon. Being in the US, I had not even heard about this earthquake warning, so I went to google to search it and that's how I ended up watching this video.
Chris, empty out one of the Gatcha machines, slap some mini abroad in japan merch in some capsules, with a little instruction sheet to get into the bar. For like, 300 yen or something, you get a little acrylic merch and how to get in lol. And if patrons know, they know
Every 90-150 years there is a Nankai earthquake. It's called "mega" because its constant richter scale is at 8.0 +- more or less every time since 684 what was first record what was preserved ... many times Japan was destroyed by this earthquake ... one time it even partly collapsed/erupted Mount Fuji and local areas were covered by 15 cm thick lungs burning ashes ... it's quite bad. It's happening because Japan sits on one of the mantle plates below which second mantle plate from ocean is subsiding under. It takes time but eventually mantle plate what Japan is sitting on as it is pushed along the way in the end that pressure will give in and that plate will push upwards with all the water on top of it. Earthquake's are only side problem because of friction of that motion but problem number one is where it get scary. Japan and its all biggest major cities with its most lived populations are located on Southeast coast right where that plate moves. It's expected it could create a Tsunami up to 21 meter (68 feet) high what could easily overflow any sea wall ever build. Tsunami in 2011 was 9.1 meters (30 feet) high but Japan's government expect 10 times more economical damage because of its location. Remember 2011 was in rural areas of Japan up north where is less people. From Tokyo to further south are mostly dense urban megacities. What complicate this problem is that this plate is split into 5 sections. Only once in documented history all 5 section raptured at the same time when Fuji also erupted in 1707. Mostly it's paired into 2 sections what do give a way and here is the biggest problem. Noone knows what section along the coast will it be. Most likely and worst case scenario is that it will be Tokyo section what did not moved for 170 years already in pair with other section. You guesed it right ... Tokyo ... one of the most populated cities in the world. It's scary as F. When one section starts to move it can accelerate other section as well and that is why second section move as well most of the time. Last Nankai earthquake was in 1946 ... yep 78 years ago ... so if you were born after 1990 you theoretically can be alive when it happens. 90-150 since 1946 is 2036-2096 time scale ... Tokyo section never in past given in first ... it's not likely it will even if it is 170 years since it did ... it will most likely be other section but problem is that Tokyo section will most likely be the second one. So I could be 42 years old when it happens. It sucks you can not prepare for something like this. All people can do is learn what to do when goverment give you a warning. Also ... I love Japan and I would hate to see something like 2011 again. I cried when I seen it as a kid ... that shear helplessness when you can only watch must be soul crushing. Also this is why Japanese people are who they are really ... ability to help others, compassion, why Japan is what it is is because of disasters like those ... Japanese people learned how to rebuild over and over and that spirit what you see today from Japanese people is because of disasters like Nankai earthquake. Without those Japan of today would be a lot different place. Hope you learned something and that my english was not that bad ... It's my second language so ... why I did take time to write it? If at least single person will learn and be curious it could save lives in the future. That's all I can ask for. Learn and stay safe where ever you are! Also I'm a nerd ...
I appreciate this conversation. It's funny, reminds me of how my friends and I talk about current events, and absolutely is interesting and breaks up the silence while working. Yes, your main money maker videos are great too but I can't tell you how much I appreciate this as well. I hope we see more of these.
There's actually a long tradition of Japanese Emperors retiring. Back in the old days, like the pre-Shogunate days, Emperors would often retire with the expressed intention to become a monk. But they would often retain most, if not all their power from behind the scenes with their successor being just a puppet. What comes to mind for me is Go-Shirakawa, the who was in power when the first Shogunate, the Minamoto, took over. Suffice to say, it didn't always work out well.
Same thing here in Lisbon. We supposedly are already late for the big one. Of course when it happenned back in 1755 it was catastrophic because of the fires and tsunamis. Lisbon is not exactly prepared for it but I do believe the damage would be always less considering the fact that houses at the time were all wood and things are sturdier now.
Regarding the segment about airport arrival - as an American who regularly did domestic flights to get back home in college, I too got anxious about cutting it close with flights. I like to arrive 2-3 hours pre-TSA, the earlier the better. Though I do think I'm a bit of a special situation as I'm a software engineer for hobby *and* for work, so it isn't too hard to keep myself busy in an airport. A laptop, free wifi, my home VPN, and a good meal or two keeps me satisfied just about anywhere for a whole day.
I've been planning my first JP trip for the last 2 years, I arrive in 3 weeks time. I imagine that the mega quake will actually come to fruition at that time when I land because I'm so fat.
If someone wants to participate in a Matsuri, they can go to the city hall and fill out a participation form a few days before the matsuri takes place. I did that two years ago in Narita, Chiba during the Narita Gion Festival. Also anyone can take part in a Bon odori.
The earthquake by itself isn't the scariest part. It's the follow-up disasters of tsunami(s), aftershocks, fires, extreme temperatures (either hot or cold), and whatnot that really makes one hope the disaster relief is ready for whatever. I've never heard about preppers in Japan, but I'm sure there are some with bunkers full of generators and enough canned food to feed a small village for weeks.
I have really enjoyed watching the cycling video while doing my cycling workout session indoors. The hot weather during the summer prevents me from cycling outdoors, so the video helped me imagine myself cycling in Japan and enjoying the nature there. An idea for a new channel: cycling simulator videos with Japan scenery (without the motivational talk).
I really enjoy watching your Cyclothons with Conner for mostly the Sights, which, even when you guys are struggling, you all take the time to take it in. I really loved Iga(I believe that's what it was called) the whole, 'birthplace of Ninja' it was really pretty.
😂Several years ago, I was running late for a flight from Iwakuni to Tokyo. Living on the base there, it was about a 10 minute taxi to the terminal; I managed to get from my room and into my seat on the plane in about 30 minutes.😂 I don't think I could ever do that in the US, even at similar sized airports.
I showed up 9 hours early to the terminal at Haneda because I didn't want to miss the plane home to Hawai'i lol Only did that once out of the 2 trips to Japan.
As a kiwi I'm looking forward to the earthquake documentary! I'm in Wellington and we're overdue for a huge quake - every time one hits I think, is this it?
My friends and I took a flight from KIX to OKA, we thought "domestic flight from Osaka to Okinawa...90 minutes should be fine". It was not, the only reason we made our flight was because the flight itself was 20 minutes behind schedule. To get to the right terminal via an airport bus took twenty minutes, and getting through their manual af bag check took just over an hour. So long story short, 2 hours domestic, 3+ for international.
So as someone who grew up with my mum working for the airline. The reason for the 3 hrs before is many flights are overbooked. Usually first come first served. If you ever reach an airport and they are like oh no we are overbooked. Its usally because someone who came earlier checked in before you. This kind of changed with online pre check but to be honest i believe they still give away the space
I was with a group of Australian coffee snobs in Tokyo not long ago and they said McDonald’s Coffee was the only good coffee. Mc Cafe started in Australia because they had to compete with the coffee culture in Sydney and Melbourne, and it looks like you have Mc Cafes in Japan now. Better than that toilet water with sugar from Starbucks.
Mate are you sure they were Aussies, they certainly weren’t coffee snobs, as no Australian would state that Macca’s coffee was anything but a no other choice option
That was the irony, Maccas was the only good coffee they could find. And they tried everywhere. Probably because it’s Japan the quality of McDonald’s would actually be better than in Oz just like the Quality of 7-Eleven food is surprisingly good in Japan compared to the crap in Australia.

With your sore tooth Chris, from a nutrition point of view, too much caffeine can leech calcium out of the bones. So you need to increase your dark green leafy 🥬 vegetables to alkalise your body to reverse calcium back into the bones. No point increasing calcium in your diet if your body is too acidic. Need to balance the pH.
@fattiger6957 Yes that too! Vitamin D is very important. There was a big documentary on Japanese National TV about Japanese people not getting enough Vitamin D because they are worried about sun damage. Mushrooms have some Vitamin D also. The acid factor is that the body uses calcium to buffer the acid so instead of your calcium going to bones and cellular activity is becomes free floating calcium in the blood and ends up calcifying in the arteries and places it shouldn’t be.
Let's see. People not sure if the gacha machine is the door/entrance. Gacha machine heavy and difficult to move. Hmm? Obvious solution. Employ a large muscular foreign gentleman as a doorman. If the hopefuls look cool he could ask them "Lost?" And if they reply yes, he could ceremoniously open the door and usher them into the hidden paradise. Put an extra JPY100 on each drink to pay for him. The punters will love it!
