This makes me really miss my dad... He passed away 2021 Christmas eve... I haven't stepped foot in his workshop since he died but I really think it's time to carry his word working stuff forward. This channel is really Inspiring.

Thank you for the inspiration, encouragement and thumbnaily goodness mate. The premiere was good fun, had a number of folks ride the whole way along. Early CTR is 9.8%, I think you done good :D Now I will spend the weekend encouraging others to also run it on the TVs in their shops while they work and be inspired and entertained hopefully :D
Everyone in his street sleeps with their mattresses on the floor as he’s taken all their bed slats!
Hahahaha it is actually getting harder and harder to find decent bed slats. There are a lot of apartments near me so always people moving and illegally dumping unwanted furniture on the street. Bed slats are getting thinner and thinner, and most of the furniture is chipboard or cardboard... 😥😥
i sleep to blacksmithing and woodworking videos and the sound balancing and music on this is so aggressive it woke me up which is impressive.
Hahaha yes my early video music choices reflected my personal music tastes...which are probably not ideal for woodwork videos. 😅 I've mellowed the tunes I use in videos over the years now 😄
one of my favorite things is trying to figure out aussie slang with context. having it explained is good too sometimes cause y'all come up with some funky talk
Hahaahaha the funniest part is while we have a lot of obvious slang, there are occaisionally words which I THINK everyone knows which in fact is not true. Even when I was in England I had to explain myself at time let alone when I travelled the US :P
lmao im in the US but a lot of the content i enjoy is aussie based and i have definitely had to explain once or twice some random shit i've picked up. i mostly just go "yea, nah yea" a lot xD gooooood times my dude. @@FixitFingers

As somebody who is also in a one car garage, its always interesting watching what others do. I think its kinda a different experience being in a small space. I think its mostly it reinforcing a good line of thinking, everything has to have its place, a purpose, and be thought out. I just abandoned the car has to be able to fit in there mentality to get a table saw to properly fit. I dream of a big shop, and I think having dealt with a small one for years will really help when I set that one up.
I think you are right Drew. When we do eventually move and I have a bigger space the lessons learned here will serve me well to not rush to fill the space just because I can. I think space limitations breeds a certain creativity. Restrictions can be beneficial. Cheers for watching!

I eventually got through this video, it was nice to see how your workshop advanced over time and i also liked how your production value increased through the whole video too. I wish i had a better documentation of my journey from a beginner, but i didn't film any of that. I only have the changes and advances i have made since starting TH-cam. Anyways good video.
The whole reason I started the channel was to document the progression of the hobby. So good to have a record of that, though the old videos make me cringe at times. I think I started filming on a Galaxy S3, then an S7, then got a shotgun mic, VO mic, and lights along the way. The filming journey has been as intense as the woody one 😅 Cheers mate!

Cheer Dave, kind words. What I really want to do to next is go through each build and tool purchase and try to work out what it actually cost me over the 5 years. I mean it has paid back in enjoyment 10 fold I am sure, but a hard figure would be interesting... mostly for my wife I think. 😅
I know it was one of the first things I made on the CNC, but looking at how I cut that sign makes me so ashamed of myself now 😆I'm VERY tempted to make a new one for you from scratch and send it up 😆
Mate, she's perfect as it is, the crowning jewel of the workshop. Only send a new one if it is fully assembled, painted, and sealed with built in lights (that actually work :P)

@@afanofdieselengines675 yeah, I have the shroud for the router, but I honestly rarely use it. It is not fantastic, a lot of dust escapes anyway, and often gets in the way so I just mask up and deal with the mess later ;)

That would be ideal, but any space can work :) I think it was Steve Ramsay from Woodworking for Mere Mortals who started his woodwork career by running an extension cord to a circular saw on the roof of his apartment building in SanFran... and that lead to some great things ;)

I currently work out of my yard/driveway in that same fashion but that's VERY weather dependant lol
Eventually if the sticks fall the right way or however that old saying goes, I'll have a portion of our back porch to set up a few things up :) (or at the very least a job site table saw 😂 if I can repeatedly make cuts or work sheet goods I can save up for a small building a lot easier)

Cheers Greg! I think most TH-cam makers are pretty good on showing their errors... at least the ones I watch. I think what I've learnt over the years is to show the mistakes that are teachable, and how you fixed it, not every silly mistake like cutting a piece too short when the solution is self evident. There is human, then there is just silly :P hehehe

It's great for power tool woodworking and space saving. The main reason I went with that is it is basically zero space with no handle coming off the side. Need more holding power? Add another clamp :D

I don't take my content that seriously and know there are (many) failings in it and the woodwork. Oh when mum got me the Advent Calendar for Christmas I said "Well I'll open them, but space them out over the summer..." So far I think I've only got one spare in the fridge 😅 Last night was a Deed's Brewing Co. Oat Cream IPA at a much more dad friendly 6.5%. Best of the box so far, and sadly another that only exists in the calendar! Have to go back to real work next week, she'll be 6 weeks. Not looking forward to it, tempted to take some Long Service to stay with her longer 🥰 I'm super happy with the video and secretly had a 10K views Xmas wish on it which it hit overnight. Now to start on the 10 year workshop journey by finally adding some real dust extraction!

Hahaha yes, it was never really about the money, it was about the space and practicality of owning one. In the end it worked out well, as the CTS came along and it has been the best solution to my table saw needs in a tiny workshop :D

Great video, I like it. However, I would've setup miter station differently. You are holding "waste" portion of cut material. The piece that you need can (eventually will) kick back because its between stop block and saw. Nothing is supporting it. Or you need to change the way you cut with miter saw. Just my observation and suggestion. Other then that I enjoyed the video (without popcorn)
That's an excellent suggestion. I can put the stop block on the other side, I just only mounted tape on the right as that gives me a longer reach. Maybe I should learn to cut left handed. I am usually very conscious of letting the blade stop before lifting, but you are right, it's a risk that can be mitigated... Let's see what I can do. Cheers!

Great walk down memory lane Jimbo some proper good builds in there the little apothecary cabinet being one my personal highlights. May have to steal that. But use over there dont no what cold is. Seen u few times moaning about the cold. Weve woke up here this morning to 2" of snow(50mm) 😅 went bed last night was -5°c my shop is getting that cold gonna have to start taking my glue and finishes home stop them going off. Love the 3and half hour montage few bog watches and great videos. 👏👏🏴👍
When I worked in Scotland in winter I only ever wore a short sleeve shirt. The hostel was warm, the van was warm, the schools were warm. Didn't see the need for a jacket. The kids trudging past in the snow while I unloaded the van looked at me like I was crazy. "Where you from?!" they ask. 'Straya mate.... they did not know how to process this 😆No, we don't get cold here, but then we have no heating so the when it gets chilly (usually not much below 10, rarely hits zero) you feel it. Thanks for hiding away in the John for so long mate, the Mrs must've worried there was something wrong going on in there!

No, as I used paid plans from Steve Ramsay I never produced a copy myself as not to undercut his work. However mine might be different enough I'll consider it one day :)

Did it ever 😅 New dad life and a rigorous feed and poop schedule is limiting my workshop time right now so instead I spent most of the week putting this together. The early videos took a bit of work (I cut out a LOT of chat and repetition), the more recent ones were easier. Still, I think I watched the whole thing half a dozen times over while making charges, doing the commentary etc. Glad folks are enjoying it! 😃
@@FixitFingers Well I certainly did enjoy it. I sometimes throw a clip together, just something rather short, mostly unedited, and it takes me half a day hahaha.
Congrats on the little one! We've got our second last april. That together with the time my company consumes leaves hardly any time left to spend on other things.
@@DUTCHHUSKY66Treesandforest I think a normal 15 minute build video takes me about 8 hours of editing. Hard to judge this one as I couldn't sit for more than an hour or so at any one time, but from conception to publish was a solid week.

Easy one that question! After high school I only had one mate who went into the trades (He's a shipwright, helped me on my boat jobs) and he had been running Makita for 10 years before I picked up a drill so I followed his example. No regrets, Team Teal has never let me down. Zero breakdowns, zero replacements, even the 2nd hand ones I bought!

I may comment a second time after this but have to ask. You did really well early on with basic tools. So how the heck did you end up with a Bosch axial glide? I have the 12 inch. Its the best miter saw you can get unless you're a Kapex fan. So how do you have that and no table saw? You could get the Delta table saw thats about $600 US dollars (or somewhere around that) and have a pretty great table saw for the price. The fence is awesome! So just wondering? Im only 10 mins into your video so maybe ill see the answer but i just wanted to comment early, thank you for posting, like the tip of the hat to Mark and Jesper, and your motivation to "just get started!"

Cheers Sean! What I like most about this long form is my older videos which only got a few hundred views in 5 years, have now reached so many folks. (and surprisingly re-watching them, they are not _as bad_ as you remember them 😅 That Galaxy S3 and S7 they were filmed on was actually was OK video for the time). We have a wealth of great makers down here, spoilt for choice with such a small population. I know I follow at least one Texan, Harki from Longhorn Workshop. Firstly the Axial Glide. Fortunately, I have a good government job, so the price of tools is not usually the issue for me, it's the space. A traditional sliding mitre would never have fit with the long rails, so I was lucky that a mate of mine was upgrading from the 10" to the 12" Bosch and sold me his old one. I nearly bought the DeWalt 10" Jobsite saw many times over the years, but when it came to the checkout, I just never really _needed_ it that much, and it was going to be a struggle to fit it in so I ran with my Kreg jigs for years. It was a decision that ultimately paid off, as my channel grew off the back of getting stuff done with limited tools, and eventually, when SawStop dropped their baby CTS saw, the woodworking store I partner with (Carbatec) decided to send me one out. It really is the perfect table saw for my tiny shop. Hopefully, that wasn't a spoiler and you've made it to the end already! A new hack-and-slash video is dropping today... much shorter this time. The apothacary drawers? Oh yeah, you could by good plastic sets for next to nothing that work perfectly... but then the fun of the hobby is in the making and having it match the other workshop furniture 😊 (Waiting until I had a table saw would have been a better idea though 😅)

@@FixitFingers i am a newbee mature new pathway in life woodworking ,on a quantum learning curve , saftey and no rush being most important, had two warning cuts , but thanks for vids ,its all going in like sponge :) lots of bits to get , and tryout , but got a lot of kit , so trying out making jigs

@FixitFingers I built a mini "carport shed/workshop office so trying to figure out designs that I can walk in and out without bumping my head or hand or leg 🤣 but this metal shed doesn't have much mounting points has a falling apart cupboard inside which is huge

I was an Ultramarie player, but while I still have the army (about 5000 points worth by 3rd Edtion rules) I haven't really broken them out much since uni (too many years ago!) except for a few games of 'Kill Team' recently :) I miss playing, just too many hobbies and not enough time!

How can anyone afford a garage?
Well, we bought an old 1970's 2 bedder unit, 10 years ago in our 30s, using a double household income and 10 years of savings with decent jobs, no kids, and family support... you know the usual way 😅 Seriously though, we are very fortunate, and while a garage was a must (no street parking here) this was before I took up the tools and was just lucky I had the space for a workshop...even with the car in. Sydney is nuts expensive, we are now looking to get out to the countryside where things are cheaper.

mate if your measurements are out that much that you need to shim it but actually shim because you use a spirit level then you have no idea how to level a project and keep it square during the building process. sorry mate but watching you spirit level and shim when you were building made me roll my eyes. Always keep the project square during the build. what you did put your job out of square badly. A spirit level is only used at the completion of a project to make sure it is horizontal and can be achieved with levelling feet .
