One of the best performances of an artist ever. I wish v could c the old Kamal again. Nowadays he is acting in masala roles more and not these kind of roles which very few can do.....but then again u need another Mani Ratnam for that and those don’t come by too often either. This film was such a path breaker and led to the trend of Indian films finally aiming to internationalize their film making techniques. Before that there was an unsaid acceptance that our story telling would be simple and straight forward and wouldn’t aim to imitate international trends. Our technicians and artists werent thought to be sophisticated enough to attempt it and our audience was not thought to be sophisticated enough to watch it. So before Mani came along u had small bursts of truly world class cinema but nothing game changing . It was only after he came and specifically after Nayakan came that Indian audience and cinema fraternitys imagination got ignited in a big way. The real reason this film will always have pride of place in Indian cinema is that this was the film that changed so much in our perception of what Indian cinema should be. Today this may seem like a primitive attempt( though KHs acting, IRs music and some of PCS’s camerawork will be timeless classics never to be repeated or surpassed) but it was what led to the shift in Indian cinema after decades of following outdated storytelling, music, camerawork and acting techniques. I dunno how many today can appreciate this in that regard. And KH was such a monster in his performance here. This can never be replicated by anyone. Wish he would do tbh us kind of cinema more.The last time v saw a glimpse of his real ability was in Drishyam and also Uttama Villain ( an underrated performance for which he should have been nominated for an award ). Much of his work the past decade has been masala stuff. Same is true of Mani Ratnam who was such a trailblazer till the late 2000s.

Although influenced by the Godfather, there are three standout performers in this piece. 1. Kamal: no one else could’ve played the role better. 2. Nasser: Extremely underrated. Excellent performance not just as a police officer but also as a kind of a protagonist. 3. Ilayaraja: What a masterpiece the bgm is. There is only one and only one Ilayaraja. There’s a reason why he’s called the maestro.

Being so composed and that scene catching the color of police in court area infront of all police when hugging his friend janagraj, shows the old man is still a ferocious don, hatsoff to maniratnam's cult making.
Any body would weep profusely.it is a scene of the century,would remain so for centuries to come.there can be no second Kamal.hats off to maniratnam for handling the theme,beyond anybody perception.Nayakan-truly memorable.

He was a Don till 1984. He died in 88 due to heart attack. Daughter and son in law died in Tamilnadu in 2011. Movie may be an inspiration but very well produced.
