One bizarre side effect of Xe inhalation is a very deep voice temporarily like inhaling sulfur hexafluoride. Both gases are extremely heavy and displace oxygen so you must ventilate well after inhaling them. A youtuber Cody demonstrated the effects of inhaling the noble gases (no, not radon!) LOL. The effects of unintentional radon exposure are well known. It decays to polonium in the lungs and may cause cancer. Many of the uranium miners in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland died of radon exposure and their families were affected too because the work clothes they brought home had uranium ore dust on them. Most of the men also smoked tobacco which made the situation much worse.
We have xenon therapy centers in Ukraine when you can take sessions (30min) under the anesthesiologist babysitting/ Price starting from 50euro per session. So, you're welcome.
So let's say this was available in the U.S. in the OR. Would it be administered in a vaporizer, like Volatiles such as Sevoflurane, Isoflurane, Desflurane, and Enflurane, and other former anesthetics? Or would it be controlled in a Flowmeter, as a driving gas, like N2O, O2, and Air are?

That's nothing. I'd gladly pay 10$ for a liter of the stuff. But liter is really weird descriptor here because 1 liter could have different concentrations. I'd think they would go by grams
nothing no, a liter means the gas is a liter under atmorpheric pressure and most often 20 degrees celcius. So, a liter of gas in a balloon, 293 degrees kelvin and at atm pressure will be a liter big (10x10x10cm).
Hi, I have enjoyed your videos so far please could you do a video about cyclopropane. It's an interesting gas with interesting effects but most people are put off by its flammable and explosive effects.
I came into this, being a chemist and *(personal)* drug researcher, saying "no fucking way." I'm stunned you can literally just inhale xenon to get high. Does that mean if someone shocked you by touching you, you'd light up somewhere??
That’s about as bizarre as it gets, a noble gas, as nonreactive as it gets short of helium, not only has psychoactive effects, is an ideal anesthetic but can literally treat hypoxia damage while being just about what you could call the opposite of oxygen
I wish this was used more for general anesthesia. Would be much safer than most other anesthetics because of it’s safety fir the cardiovascular system.
And they don’t use it because it would be $100s per surgery. Do you know how much the medical industry already makes off of surgeries. Seriously. They could spare the $300. That’s ridiculous.
The uploads are beginning to increase again. I'm aiming for 2-3 videos each week and there will likely be two more overviews this week. Funding remains the primary limitation.
Hello Hi The atom itself is not reacting thats true, but still it is possible to fit in the active area of an enzyme. Think of it as a key in keyhole procedure. So it does not have to change chemically.
Alex Hyon: Xenon is the noble gas most willing to react. It has many, many layers of electrons, which are loosely bound and the whole electron cloud "sloshes around" easily (we call this polarizability). When a polar molecule brings its region of high electron density near a Xe atom (take H2O as an example, O: points toward Xe), the electron clouds of the electron donor (O:) and Xe repel so Xe's electrons slosh to the far side of the Xe atom. This makes the far side of Xe slightly negative, and the side close to the electron donor (O:) becomes slightly positive. In this state we say Xe has been polarized, and it has an induced dipole because it has a positive side and a negative side (due to the electrons sloshing in one direction). This makes Xe susceptible to chemical reactions, for instance our water molecule could then share an electron pair with the Xe, forming a "coordinate covalent bond" (really just the same as any covalent bond, made by two atoms sharing two electrons). More electron donors like water can similarly attach to the Xe atom, I think 6 is the most stable number of attached molecules. We call these attached molecules ligands. Xe is a large, "sloshy" (polarizable) atom that receives electrons and thus forms bonds with multiple ligands that surround it. Note that Xe can exceed the "octet rule" this way; it can end up with many more than just 8 valence electrons. These extra electrons, received from the ligands, can be accommodated in d-orbitals. (Row 2 elements like C, N, O, F, Ne can't expand their octet because their d-orbitals are too high in energy to be available.) This behavior of expanding octet and being coordinated by several ligands/electron donors is exactly how transition metals (iron, chromium, etc) behave. Thus, Xe is a noble gas that reacts like a transition metal. (But to a lesser extent.) Other very large non-metals like Iodine also behave like transition metals in this way (I actually conducted laboratory research on hypervalent iodine compounds for a semester.) So, Xe can be forced to react because it is so large - its electrons can slosh to the far side, creating an induced dipole which will accept electrons to form weak bonds with other molecules. Can He or Ne do this? No - not enough layers of electrons to be polarizable, and they don't have accessible d-orbitals to house bonds in anyway. Ar is also very inert. I'm not sure about Kr, it does have d-orbitals, but its willingness to react may be negligible. Note that I'm not saying Xe is a reactive element, I'm just saying in the right conditions it can be lured into reacting, so it's actually an interesting exception to the classical noble gas stereotype. This is the chemistry. As to the biochemistry/pharmacology, I have no idea and I would love to find out. tl;dr I'm on Adderall.
