Well I’m not gonna lie. it's a bit embarrassing trying to do a cover of any Steve Gadd track. But thanks to Drumeo I got a chart for this tune and attempted a playthrough. One of the greatest tracks off one of the greatest albums of all time. Just when you think it can't get any better Wayne Shorter blows the roof off with the sax solo 🤯 Hope ya dig it! 🤘 Check out my drum covers playlist for hundreds of covers 🙏
Thank you for doing this. I consider the drum/sax in the middle of this song is as near perfection as possible. I've never seen it done and now I have a greater appreciation of it.
Well done Andrew. I love playing all Steely Dan songs but this tune is the drummers shine song, in which the spotlight goes on you. Plus just a feel good song to drum to . Cheers from 🇨🇦🍻
That was beautiful! The attention to details and the class on those cymbals was just stuning to hear. By the way, the sound of said cymbals is flawless!
Great job on such a technical precision percussion experience. Steely Dan were known for their absolute pursuit of perfection. The song Aja, is a mine field for the drummer. Just when you think you have gotten past a dangerous part the mood changes and a whole new field comes into sonic view. You got through it alive and well.
Probably just my warped sense of humour, but seeing you playing Steely Dan in a Black Sabbath T- Shirt made me smile. That, and your obvious talent of course.
Hey Andrew! Really nice job! This song is SO difficult to play- and for more reasons than the signature fills. The feel has to be just right, the subtlety of the cymbal accents and tom hits in the quiet sections. You have to know how to really play to do this, and you proved that you do :-). Well done sir! One this I missed though- the classic stick click lol 🙂
I can't explain it, I know all the musicians that played with Steely Dan from Bernard Purdie to Michael McDonald are all legendary but I cannot stomach the sound of this band, it's got this jazz fusion thing that absolutely makes me want to jump off a building.
It is like cocktail lounge fusion - a mashup straight from the depths of hell. Regular fusion I can appreciate to some degree. I have friends/fellow musicians who love them (one tab transcribed all their guitar parts) but I always joked SD makes me want to leave the room when they are playing. That being said, there are a few songs I like, lots of great drum parts, and I don't mind some of the wry lyrics. Last informal jam I had, I recommended Rikki Don't Lose that Number to play (always liked Jim Gordon's stuff) - my friends were a bit surprised I picked an SD song to play.
Really great Andrew! I've always wondered if part of the challenge of this song as a drummer is that the first 2/3rds of it are very light on drums, but you have to stay ready for those solo sections in the last third.
Great cover of a fairly difficult song! You did well my friend! 💙🥁💙 I know many who have (like myself) or do play music that's heavier BUT, try playing this without the music in front of you or accustomed to playing it regularly and you'll understand what I'm saying. Yacht Rockin' Ain't Easy 😂
Spot on Andrew. 🙂 Was it a chart you were looking at? Remember when the song came out? The song was everywhere. Also, is that an old Fibes kit? Around here they're a sought after collectors kit. 👍
This guy is really good. The only boo boo Andy made was at the end Steve was playing the ride not the Hi-hat at the end. I know shut up all I did was point it out.
Day 19 of requesting you to react austin archey playing into the earth it's super fast but he's really calm and it's the fastest song of Lorna shore but he's heel toe is insane he hit 32 notes in 2 SECONDS. I’m giving up on day 20

Too much humility my man, that was epic. Love to see someone so relaxed in their musical element. Good work fella.
Props from Scotland.

Made the 2 drum solo's look effortless.
I don't know about that!
But thank you :)
These guys were way ahead of their time. Seriously incredible talent in this band. Impressive dynamic control Andrew! 👏🔥
Crazy band and endless line ups of the best musos in the world

Really nice. Respect to anyone who can plausibly play a Gadd part at all.
🙏
Beautiful rendition, Andrew. Your students are lucky people.
Thank you very much! 🙏
Really really nice. So much depth in it. Thanks always.
You are so welcome!
You play how you preach Andrew! And I like that a lot! Shoulders down, face relaxed, small movements...
That was top notch!
I appreciate that!
Love it. Takes a brave man to take on a Steve Gadd part! You got the pocket. That section from 4:49 where Gadd just takes off you nailed man!
🙏
🙌🙏
Nice job. Particularly like the cymbal voicings.
Hey, thanks so much!
Solid and elegant drumming!
🙏
That was great Andrew! I got into jazz and Steely Dan through Rick Beato but also love Black Sabbath🤟
Double win!
I love me some steely dan. This is a great cover. To a non drummer it sounded flawless.
🙏
Excellent! Walter and Donald would be proud.
I doubt it!!! They are brutal 🤣🤣
Great cover bro. You are braver than me. Awesome work.
Thanks a lot!
Need to work on the outro groove. Absolute beast mode on that part
My favorite band of all time
Me too. Magical album this one
Andrew is playing like a real Gentleman 😅...love it Andrew. A dutch Fan living in Austria 😊
🙏
I wish I could like this more than once.
HAHAHA! Too kind
super cool! I was waiting for the stick click though! 😬
Next time! LOL
Nice job GADD-DREW!
🤣🤣
Not quite Gadd level just yet! 🙌

One of my favorite songs. And a very difficult one at that! You really nailed as well as any mere mortal could hope. Thanks Andrew.

HAHA! Very nicely done there :)
Amazing!
Thank you! Cheers! 🥂
Very well done. 🤟

@@AndrewRooneyDrums you know I'ma metal head and I do myself! Truthfully, I love a little bit of everything.... except today's hip-hop.... that sucks!
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers! 🙏
Impressive, Andrew. Very cool to watch. I appreciated the foot camera. Now do Pneuma by Tool...just kidding.
Deal! 🤣👌
Is the stick click not on the sheet music then? 😂 Well done, man. Very impressive.
I did a take with the click! It was on the sheet!
Don’t know why just didn’t feel right to include it

Well spotted. Old Fibes :)
Yup. Just a read through of the Drumeo chart
Fantastic! Now do a Drum Teacher Reacts to Aja | Steely Dan | Drum Cover by Andrew Rooney
I need someone else to do that! 🤣
It was Steve Gadd on this one, wasn't it?
And man, I love the sound of your kit!
Oh. I just saw the pinned comment.. 😅
Yup the master Gadd 🙌
Hey Andrew, idk if you saw the video that Drumeo released just yesterday about Bill Ward. It is sick!
Oh can’t wait! 🙏
GRACEFULLY DONE.. 🤙🤙🤙 🤔🤔ALTHOUGH I MAY BE WRONG. BUT DONT IT END WITH THE RIDE & BELL FADE.. EITHER WAY I CANT PLAY IT 🤣
Honestly.
Not good enough to get that ride part outro on a read through.
That is the hardest part of the song. Very very tricky 👀
@@AndrewRooneyDrums BROTHER. YOU PLAYED IT GREAT. AFTER ALL. IT IS A STEVE GADD PIECE 😁 LOVE STEELY DAN THANKS 🤘🤘🤘🤘
