Old school fanboys will twist the facts and tell you that defenders were allowed to tackle from behind. But that's only half the story. At 4:15 and 4:43 you can clearly see some hard fouls from Pele himself. And he got away with it. It was no disadvantage, everyone was allowed to do that back then.
Oh come off it, you really think attacking players benefitted just as much as defenders under such conditions? Use your eyes, count how many times he was tackled to how many tackles he dished out. It wasn't just tackles from behind, defenders could go in studs showing and not be penalised, sometimes even if they didn't get the ball! No attacking player today has to put up with that! A defender is getting sent off even if he gets the ball for dangerous play.

In 80s football where weak, skinny, slow Platini, Zico, Rumennige, Socrates etc reigned he would have to play with his hands tied behing his back to make the games a bit more competitive.
