    Melody is always heard in Jack's drum solo.

      "I don't get it, therefore, after half-listening for a minute, I'll tell you all what these artists are doing wrong and why (Chad Smith/Buddy Rich/Neil Peart) is better". "This sucks because it isn't what I wanted". "mmmmmmmtechniquerrrrrrrtechniqueumumumumumumutechnique". "I could play this in my sleep".

      So, you're saying this was good?
      I get it, opinions and subjectivity, yadda yadda....that duet could have been legendary, instead it was so one dimensional and bland.

    This is actually really interesting. Jack maintains a melody throughout, and Steve seems to be trying to compliment Jack's drum melody with some cymbal spice. At one point Steve throws in some ideas, and Jack seems to get a kick out of it. I can see how one might think Jack is consuming all the space, and also how Steve could follow him- which he starts to towards the end, complimenting Jack's phrase with his own type of response. Jack's drums are tuned higher though, so he has a clearer pitch. I wonder if they discussed tuning or content before they played!

    I really like what Jack laid down. He stuck with it pretty consistently, he was laying a bed for Steve to play over. However, idk what Steve was thinking. It seemed like he was trying to make it into something it wasn’t. Some of what he played fit, but most of it was a stretch to my ear. Why was he trying to play beats?

    Jack DeJohnette was clearly the leader in this exchange. Smith was groping, while Jack established the musical direction.

      If Smith had followed the simple harmonic pattern Jack played throughout, he wouldn't have got into such a mess. He got a roasting imo, just speed, which equates to noise. Jack had the last word too!

    Love the way Jack just laid it down freestyle without any concern but melody. And a beautiful one at that. As we all know, Steve is a fantastic player by himself. But here? I felt he was just fumbling. I would have preferred he do something simple like play with high hat and rim clicks. It seemed as though he was thinking about the way he might perceived more than the actual music that was being created. It would’ve been far better if he just focused on the music.

    • @gemmutlu4999
      @gemmutlu4999 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Indeed. Unfortunately Steve’s playing is detrimental to the music here. Not only that but he’s all over the place with time and phrasing and note placement. My thought was exactly as yours. I would have just played the hi-hat and let Jack do his thing until maybe it could evolve into something else. That would serve the music and not anyone’s ego. This is a great lesson for new and old musicians alike. Play for the music and not for your ego self.

    Smith non-existent! The genius of Jack kill him with a very old African melodic ostinato idea!! It's normal: since many years Jack is on the Olympus of the goods!!

  • @planetkhaos7473
    @planetkhaos7473 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow. So DeJohnette starts with a 16 stroke linear pattern that sounds pretty cool. Smith with his jaz/fusion chops just ain't feeling it so decides to play what he wants anyway. Further, DeJohnette was screwing up his timing once he tried to add fills. I have to assume he had just made up this pattern on the spot. This is proof that even the best of the best are just normal people too.

      You should check out the melodic phrasing of Jack's playing. He just created this on the spot. I was a part this week long drum camp, featuring Steve Smith and Zakir Hussain back in July, 2014. Jack just walked in started this melodic phrasing.

      The drummers of the world know. They hear, and they see. but PAPADOO not only doesn't know, and doesn't hear, he thinks they're challenged geezers. I love it when someone who doesn't know, and doesn't know that he doesn't know what he doesn't know, decides to announce it to the world like he just discovered something important.
