Okay, this segment was absolutely true and Denmark is very much like that as well. They take biking very serious. As for German food there is other good foods and pastries like a Black Forest cake they should be forgiven for. Lol the Scandinavian talking was hilarious though. People use clocks and eye blockers when sleeping. It gets even more interesting for Muslims trying to observe Ramadan. They will use Mecca time to start or break fasts. U get used but it takes long to adjust. The rain gets pretty bad if it falls after a snow fall because the snow becomes slippery and the risk of falling increases significantly. No worries man, the population of the countries that DO matter to Germany, the Dutch, the Danes, the Polish etc...have had decades to adjust the post war grudges.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s...learning our WWII history taught me to have any grievances I could muster against Germans.
But eventually growing up the sentiment completely shifted and we grew more financially attached than emotionally disdained.
You're by far the main motor of Europe... morally, economically, directionally... you're an prosperous and dedicated example for the rest of Europe to grow towards.
But to conclude, the sentiment outside the EU is irrelevant, and mostly fueled by lack of education and narrow mindedness.
I don't go on a holiday very often, but in a few weeks I'm doing a nice roadtrip between München, Maagdenburg and back home through the Ruhr...I'd rather do that than boring my mind into oblivion at some summer resort in a third world EU wannabe.

This is perfect. I married a half-Dutch woman (also half Kiwi). Lived near Amsterdam for a couple years...yeah, not mean, but not warm. I went back to the US for a bit before me and my wife moved to New Zealand, and in New Mexico or Arizona I was going into this gas station and some guy held the door open for me and said "after you, sir"...I looked around for this "sir". Meanwhile, back in the Netherlands, it was "I have enjoyed your visit, but it is now time for dinner...have a nice evening. Bye."

Bicycle CRAZINESS , We are from San Diego, and just returned from the Netherlands; experience the bicycle craziness. Trevor! You nailed it that’s exactly how it is. We were shocked and amazed that we didn’t see more head on collisions or people clipping each other‘s handlebars or kids flying out of their bicycle seat.
We used to race bicycles and it was mind-blowing to watch these people intertwine throughout the towns. We asked the Innkeeper the best day to ride a bike if don’t want to get into an accident, SUNDAY! You were right! The day to ride on the side streets and get out to the country perfect.
Your skit was right on thank you. I laughed so hard. I was crying.

And plus to this , those people are not at all protected, like in the cars. If the do a sharp turn, or slip, they go flying and meet a hard ground!

Mate, the secret is that we, unlike you guys, _care for each other!_ So it’s a dance of social interaction.
We see our fellow citizens that we cooperate with. You only see everyone as competition and an enemy. So it’s a king of the hill last-man-standing MMA cage fight.
Also, we learn to ride a bike without touching the handlebar, _including_ curves and going in and out of circles, before we hit puberty! We learn to dismount the bike and stand on one pedal and _then_ brake and get off and keep walking elegantly like there was no transition. We can all ride at walking speed in a crowd and not fall over nor hit anyone, if we have to.

(I’m Danish myself, but even I wouldn’t venture out on a bike in Copenhagen. The problem is that stopping and getting started again is the most difficult, dangerous and exhausting part of biking. Because whe you stand still you have very little stability. So you have to get your feet of the ground to start pedalling, you start to fall over, and you have to make speed fast enough to be moving before you really fall over. That is why all bicycle riders hate stopping... Keep moving at all cost is the mantra of the bike rider... And Dutch bicycle riders are actually very good at that, because we have developed a very subtle language of small movements and even simple eye movements that tells us where the other goes, so that we do not need to stop... However if somebody stands in their way who does not understand that game, he or she will feel the wrath of the Dutchie...

Dutch cyclist here: this is true, but many bikes also don't have the best brakes. We use bikes to go places, not for leisure and a lot of bikes have milage on them, have spend some time in the canal or have been misused in a bicycle parking lot.

I will not hit the brakes. For the tourists: Pretend you're in a city! The street is for cyclists and cars, not for pedestrians. The sidewalk is for pedestrians. The bicycle bell is not a cute macarena song. Its a warning. If you do not listen to the warning, be prepared to face the consequences. It's the same if you as a pedestrian decide to walk on a highway, you can expect to be hit. If this is hard or difficult for you to understand, or think this is a fun experiment, you will get hit. Amsterdam is the capital city of a country with 17 million inhabitants, its not your personal disneyland. If you don't intend to respect the local rules, you can expect the consequences.

As an Amstardam cyclist this is my take: you are to be out of the way. If you don't know traffic laws, read up or take a taxi.
using the brakes when you have no right to be in my way? are you serious? what makes you think i have time to look behind me to check if someone faster than me is currently overtaking me, then if it's all clear and safe to brake, look back in front and start braking? Your balls are 30 meters removed from your legs, dangling on my spatbord by the time i stand still if i use my brakes.
you're right, there's a human being in front of you. on a bike, just traveling. And you kamikaze your body in front of me, how does that make anyone but you the bad guy?
i hope you don't wonder how the train brakes work when you just wander onto the tracks without looking

    Yet another petrolhead’s comment.
Imagine you need to hit a brake in you SUV, stop completely, turn engine off, step out of the car, lock it, and then unlock-start engine-drive off.
Hitting brakes, then accelerating from standstill is not the same in car and on a bicycle

I’ve never been more afraid of driving anywhere in the world - and I’ve lived in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Armenia - than in The Hague and Amsterdam. The rules with cyclists are:
    1. The cyclist is always right.
    2. If the cyclist is wrong, refer to Rule #1.

In the case of a road which goes straight & you in your car wish to turn right, EVERYONE, including pedestrians, has right of way before you.
In Dutch it's;"rechtdoor gaat voor" straigth on through goes first, irregardless of which form of mobility you're using.

I'm envious of the blackbird recording. I miss "my" blackbird SO MUCH. He lived here for a few years and raised so many clutches. Sang all day every day and nested in the Camelia next to the front porch where l sit in the sun. He had even learned to eat the apples l put out for the Waxeyes /Tauhou (Māori for little stranger ) and would sit on the clothesline and feed pieces to his babies. Neighbour's bloody cat killed him last year and no-one has replaced him yet, l had hoped one of his offspring would move in but no luck. I certainly do miss his singing though. 😊
