22:50 "I should have cleaned this before I opened it". Yes, the first thing you should have done is de-greased and cleaned the outside, so much easier to do when it is in one piece. And since you were going to strip it down completely then after draining the oil you should have poured in a litre of diesel, sloshed it around to thin any remaining oil, and drained that out too. Then you would not have had all that mess when you split the casing.

While getting a 2nd hand box would be the easiest, for the price of the full rebuild kit and for the sake of content it'll be worth doing it that way. Plus you'll know its good after and won't fail 6 months later etc
You have just done what I have always wanted to do - take a gearbox apart - but nicely illustrated why I never have. My late father always told me if they make a grinding noise chuck it away and find a replacement - it's always cheaper. Thanks for the education anyway :).
Brings back memories of doing a similar job on a Honda Jazz gearbox. Wouldn't have been such a bad job but had to remove the subframe to get the box out which was a pain in the ass. Good video for anyone wanting to do this themselves. Good work
I've got a 16 year old Skoda Fabia 1.2 mk1 that's been pretty good, decent galvanising so no rust. I'm no mechanic, but the local garage reckons it can go on indefinitely - anything can be fixed on them pretty economically and easily, with lots of parts at the scrappies and plenty of stuff on ebay for them.
I used to have the 1.9 TDi VRS sold it when it was 9 years old. Only did 60k miles. Bought the MK2 fabia VRS after that. They were a ticking time bomb. Known for burning oil. DSG crapping themselves. Fortunately I had a good one. Sold that last year since needing something cheaper to run now I have a baby.
Thank you for this. Personally I would just replace what is obviously broken, you can see the rest is in good shape. That metal on the magnet tells you it did it’s job and protected the rest of the box from most of the swarf washing around. Obviously, get all the bits in a parts washer to make sure there no major bits of metal floating around before rebuilding. I’ve never done a gearbox rebuild myself, and always thought of it as a black art, however, looking at this, it’s all pretty straightforward. Very interesting to see the rebuild and see this car back on the road. Great work, really informative video. Cheers.
Doubt it Derek, knowing the way the oil flows within these and how the swarf arrives at the magnet. A clean and a bearing inspection would be the first task. Replacement of the bearing pack at the end should see another 100k out of the existing box if the inspection reveals unaffected bearings. My Mrs gearbox was exactly the same and needed just the failed bearings. That was 70k ago and still quiet. The crucial part is to renew the oil every 3 years on gearboxes susceptible to 1st motion shaft bearing issues.

I've worked on cars for years, I'll happily take on any job, timing belts, clutches, head gaskets you name it but I gotta be honest the gearbox is something I've never wanted to attempt to repair. A friend of mine lost 3rd, 4th and 5th gear in his Fiesta ST. After removing the gearbox and splitting the box apart it turned out he had managed to shear the output shaft into two halves. Miraculously 1st and 2nd gear still worked as the shaft sheared in half between 2nd and 3rd. He asked could I repair it? I said im not attempting it. If you buy a recon box I'll fit that and that's the end of it. Fair play to you for doing such a job!
This box is in the same condition as the Aisin box on my Mrs Suzuki car which had a 1st motion shaft bearing failure at 70k due to missing it's 3 year oil change regime. The clear yellow gearbox oil had turned reddish brown due to excess heat. After I split it the caged bearing (metal cage not plastic) had disappeared leaving the same amount of swarf on the magnet. On hers however all the ball bearings had gathered at one side of the race intact but made a similar moan. Cost £25 plus a fiver special delivery for the same bearing and tapped on with a long socket of the same size as the inner race. Washed out the case, cleaned the rest of the gears and parts before reassembling with some Dirko grey sealant. Apart from the time, was the best £30 I've ever spent. Job at gearbox firm £350! Gearbox still going strong 6 years and 2 oil changes later. Your box looks in good condition for its mileage and no need for a full refurb as you'll probably find all of the other bearings are good.
respect for having a go. Im a driveway have-a-go mechanic myself...Nothing too mental, but my Mini is just a weekend toy so I dont have to have it working by any deadlines so if/when things go wrong/snap off, its not the end of the world. For a modern-ish car, they are reasonably easy to work on...The main issues Ive found with the Mini are rusted fasteners, components seized together (i'll write a novel one day about removing the ball joints), and access. I actually think a lot of jobs are easier if you just drop the entire sub frame ie: PAS pump. By the time you've pissed about trying to get to the thing, then remove it without damaging the electical connectors, or having to grind a bit out of the cross member, its takes as long just to drop the entire thing..Plus you can see the true horror of what is lurking there, with easy access to everything on the front end...
Nice one...did the same on my daughter's Pugeot Z307 gearbox...input bearing cheap Chinese job..all the chewed balls were held by the magnet...stripped the box and brought a quality bearing from local bearing supplier...3 years later still sweet as a nut...👍👍👍

Respect to you. Hope it goes back together! I thought changing the drum bearings and seals on my mum's 6 year old washing machine years ago was an ordeal (learning on the job, improvising, adapting and overcoming). Got another 5 years out of it.

Not done a vw box but done 3/4 Toyota boxes when I worked for them, you usually get that fine metallic gunk on the magnet in every box so I wouldn't worry about swarf elsewhere, it looks pretty clean to be honest. Only other tip I have is when removing and replacing the gears back into the casing, cable tie them together so it's easier to slot them in then you can cut them afterwards. Head mechanic taught me that little tip 👍 gearboxes make my head hurt so fair play to you tackling it first time! 😂
Great video, love watching you take these things apart and seeing inside. Something satisfying about seeing an impact gun zapping off bolts. My new impact wrench proved its worth today, getting an old rusty bolt of the caliper mount and the bleed nipple of the caliper.
Another video we enjoyed watching 👍🏻 gearbox doesn't seem to be in a bad shape. Replace all, I know it's a lot of money but at the end of the day saves finding out there's another duff bearing once back together 😊. Look forward to the next one 👍🏻😀
Thanks for the vid's on the skoda, I did ask your advice and you told me just to take my time. I managed to get the gearbox off the car with help from my wife and a neighbour assisted on the last bit. We used two trolley jacks, one for engine support the other on the G,box. We struggled with a spline bolt on the bell housing size 18 spline, that was down near the drivers side driveshaft, non of my splines fit somehow they were just undersize,,it was a snap on that saved the day. Any way I just wanted to thank you for the vid's that you filmed as I was able to prepare in advance with the tools as well. All the best and I hope you get back to TH-cam if circumstances permit. Looks like fun. Most people would replace the gearbox with a used one. At least taking this route you know if all the synchros are OK before refitting the box. However, if the box is from a rare ,exotic or very old car then rebuild what you have or combining parts from another box is often the only solution as used units can be very expensive, hard to find, and mostly worn out.
Love it, first timer and well read over the how and well prepared, in this way you can do anything, plus a bit of sound brain work. Congrats with the result. Great, I hope I do not have to do mine myself…but same problem after 366k a Superb combi T3… I just was a bit curious. You showed and explained it superb! Thanks.

Do all the bearings, that way you have peace of mind and it’s good content showing how to replace all the bearings which may have failed on other peoples gearboxes and they are looking at your video to see how to replace them.
Really good video I've stripped down many gearboxes mainly marine but never a volkswagen gearbox please be careful with those syncro hubs there's lots of springs and ball bearings if you remove the gears off the main shaft please be careful with the syncro hubs there's little bits fly all over the place lol like I mentioned as for the bearings think you will need a press to remove them looking forward to your next video good luck with rebuilding
It still looks like like complicated jigsaw piece , I always take photos for reference when taking things apart , as inevitably you look at a piece and wonder where the hell it goes or even came from

Plumbers' tube spanners are always useful for car work too. Would have been ideal for the drain plug allen key. Dead cheap also so worth having a set around useful for long reach also rather than buying deep sockets.
Loving this, not personally done this on a car or van but back in 2001 I replaced 2nd gear on a yzf 600 thundercat bike and this reminded me of that, good job and can't wait to see the outcome which ever way it goes! I commend you on the wheel nut as a bit for the oil plug as I wouldn't of thought of that😊👍

Fair play to you James i tackled a gearbox once and was left with a lot of parts and a billion roller bearings i give up so good luck putting it back together and even more in getting rid of the gear oil smell
Another really good, informative and generally all-round interesting video. I've seen plenty of diagrams and photos in manuals, but I must admit I have never taken a gearbox apart, so this was a first for me. Gearbox oil doesn't go black like engine oil. That is mostly caused by products of burning on the cylinder wall which then get scraped off by the rings. Obviously, gearboxes don't normally have combustion in there, so the oil doesn't degrade in the same way (except various old engines like the Austin 'A' series which share engine and gearbox oil). Obviously, it can still absorb any moisture that finds it's way in, and can potentially overheat (more usually in auto boxes with friction bands etc) and naturally breaks down over time due to oxidation, but nowhere near as fast as engine oil. That old oil looks quite old to me, it is dark brown, the new stuff will probably be quite a light yellow colour in comparison. Unlikely to have been changed during the clutch change, it would have been on the receipt you have. The 2nd and 3rd gear from the left on the closing shot have big grooves carved around them. Not fatal, but not ideal. I suspect a loose bearing ball got in there. Ouch. I would Install a replacement and then refurb this one for content (I imagine changing 1 bearing will generate 1 video, but changing all the bearings would still only be 1 video, so no extra cash generation). Either keep it or Ebay it.

I have a superb 4x4 elegance cr170 with 240,000 on it. This is a common problem. The plastic casings fracture . I had mine uprated with metal casing bearings and new selectors and all was spot on.
Don't know if you're still active on TH-cam but I wanted to say thank you for your video series! I have a 2012 1.6L Skoda Ocatvia TDi with a 4x4 system, possibly the worst combo of all seeing as there's a turbo and all sorts of clutter in the way in front of the transfer box. But as I am writing this I've just gotten back inside after successfully removing the gearbox! Next on the list is to check whether it is repairable or not, seeing as this box has run without oil for quite a distance...
Just looking at those gears scares the living daylights out of me. I’d be worried about putting it back together correctly 😬. Really enjoyed this video mate 👍🏻
Yup exactly, even though a 2nd hand gearbox might come with a warranty it's still a fucking nightmare to remove it again if it would fail and had to be sent back, plus it probably has honestly a higher risk of failure than a freshly repaired original one if done correctly.
Hello mate , I,m glad you filmed these videos , as your gearbox looks very much like the one in my caddy van , in a nutshell my van & me got brought home on a lorry due to one hell of a howl coming from the diff for just long enough to get it off the road . So now it,s gearbox out & rebuild it . I will be watching all of your vids on this subject , there isn,t much I haven,t repaired , but my usual drive having been landrovers you needed a barrowful of bloody expensive special tools to get them apart then back together right again , V.L. Churchill ones , not cheaper ones , this part I subbed out to the most knowledgeable guy , who has them , so like you I,m doing a car / van gearbox for the first time . I,ve clicked & subscribed . Hey James, me and my son love your content and have inspired us to get a project car, I gave up mechanical work a few years ago when my liver went into failure but he keeps asking me to work on a car so we're looking at cheap projects, out of curiosity though, could you do a full breakdown of all the cars you currently own, as we not 100% sure which ones you have, keep up the great work and producing top content. @The savage garage wow that bearing has been destroyed i would replace all of the bearing if it was me at least you have peace of mind that thay have been done and its ok for when you sell it on. Another good Jamie's I found it interesting as all ways 👍
I love yer videos James, you do great work with the bare minimum of facilities, yer an inspiration. Haynes, Sealey, Draper, Laser, Halfords, Euro Car Parts, Britool/Expert & all the top British brands should all be knocking on yer door looking to exclusively sponsor you.
Do them all, I skimped once and although I fixed a very noisy gearbox, it was still mildly noisy. All the other bearings will have some metal shards in them. The time it takes to put it all together to find out you need to do it all again isn't worth the hassle for a few quid!
Just buy the 2 you need James .... very inspired great video , I may attempt this although the thought of all the parts and remembering where they all go lol scary
Do all of them mate done a box few year back skimped on parts put it all back together and a seal leaked like a sieve had to take out and do it properly save ur self the agro Plus gives next buyer peace of mind keep up the great videos
There is a shop in NORWICH called Bearingboys Ltd and they will probably have what you need, so local to you. The bearings should have universal spec numbers or codes on them, buy your bearing then buy the seal separately. Should work out cheaper. 👍🏻 if you think this might help.
Very brave of you telling us how you don’t know as yet a solution to the pressing out of the gearbox shaft bearing.Good that you can admit this .Its part of the learning process.The solution will come with time !
Whilst yes a 2nd box would be easiest, I think ppl forget James is a content creator, a 2nd gearbox ends this playlist in oneore video. Where as replacing parts etc gives us more content to watch and ALL learn from + James get more satifisfaction from doing it so in-depth and knows it won't fail potentially in a few months.
It is the bearing cage that has broken. It’s job is to keep the ball bearings equally distributed It’s almost expected that they will be damaged once the cage has failed, particularly in a high stress application as a gearbox.
He needs to change the bearings in the bell housing case as the one that holds the primary motion shaft is gone, the others don't even move untill the u put it in gear and drive.
@@svendittmann3105 And get one with the same failing waiting to happen? Although he is selling the car on - I always make sure any car I sell has been treated properly and if I fix anything it's done to the best of my ability.
@@MiracleMitch my gearbox (skoda octavia 300.000km) made the same noises three years ago my. Bearings and seals as an set 120 - 150 euro time approx. 2 or 3 days. Used gearbox in Germany shipped from Spain 50euro+30euro, 134.000km from a seat ibiza. Changing the Gearbox 1 Day. The engine and gearbox runed perfect until the last day. Now the car is retired (400.000km)
My ultimate car would be the new octavia vrs , I've been hooked ever since having a 2001 courtesy mk1 octavia vrs I'm 43 now still not got one . The engine from the mk1 used the 225bhp audi tt lump. Every pipe had audi stamp. Loving the channel

Looks like fun. Most people would replace the gearbox with a used one. At least taking this route you know if all the synchros are OK before refitting the box.
However, if the box is from a rare ,exotic or very old car then rebuild what you have or combining parts from another box is often the only solution as used units can be very expensive, hard to find, and mostly worn out.
Love it, first timer and well read over the how and well prepared, in this way you can do anything, plus a bit of sound brain work. Congrats with the result. Great, I hope I do not have to do mine myself…but same problem after 366k a Superb combi T3… I just was a bit curious. You showed and explained it superb! Thanks.

Do all the bearings, that way you have peace of mind and it’s good content showing how to replace all the bearings which may have failed on other peoples gearboxes and they are looking at your video to see how to replace them.
Really good video I've stripped down many gearboxes mainly marine but never a volkswagen gearbox please be careful with those syncro hubs there's lots of springs and ball bearings if you remove the gears off the main shaft please be careful with the syncro hubs there's little bits fly all over the place lol like I mentioned as for the bearings think you will need a press to remove them looking forward to your next video good luck with rebuilding
It still looks like like complicated jigsaw piece , I always take photos for reference when taking things apart , as inevitably you look at a piece and wonder where the hell it goes or even came from

Plumbers' tube spanners are always useful for car work too. Would have been ideal for the drain plug allen key. Dead cheap also so worth having a set around useful for long reach also rather than buying deep sockets.

Loving this, not personally done this on a car or van but back in 2001 I replaced 2nd gear on a yzf 600 thundercat bike and this reminded me of that, good job and can't wait to see the outcome which ever way it goes! I commend you on the wheel nut as a bit for the oil plug as I wouldn't of thought of that😊👍

Another really good, informative and generally all-round interesting video. I've seen plenty of diagrams and photos in manuals, but I must admit I have never taken a gearbox apart, so this was a first for me.
Gearbox oil doesn't go black like engine oil. That is mostly caused by products of burning on the cylinder wall which then get scraped off by the rings. Obviously, gearboxes don't normally have combustion in there, so the oil doesn't degrade in the same way (except various old engines like the Austin 'A' series which share engine and gearbox oil). Obviously, it can still absorb any moisture that finds it's way in, and can potentially overheat (more usually in auto boxes with friction bands etc) and naturally breaks down over time due to oxidation, but nowhere near as fast as engine oil. That old oil looks quite old to me, it is dark brown, the new stuff will probably be quite a light yellow colour in comparison. Unlikely to have been changed during the clutch change, it would have been on the receipt you have.
The 2nd and 3rd gear from the left on the closing shot have big grooves carved around them. Not fatal, but not ideal. I suspect a loose bearing ball got in there. Ouch. I would Install a replacement and then refurb this one for content (I imagine changing 1 bearing will generate 1 video, but changing all the bearings would still only be 1 video, so no extra cash generation). Either keep it or Ebay it.

I have a superb 4x4 elegance cr170 with 240,000 on it. This is a common problem. The plastic casings fracture . I had mine uprated with metal casing bearings and new selectors and all was spot on.

Don't know if you're still active on TH-cam but I wanted to say thank you for your video series! I have a 2012 1.6L Skoda Ocatvia TDi with a 4x4 system, possibly the worst combo of all seeing as there's a turbo and all sorts of clutter in the way in front of the transfer box. But as I am writing this I've just gotten back inside after successfully removing the gearbox! Next on the list is to check whether it is repairable or not, seeing as this box has run without oil for quite a distance...

Replace the damaged bearings only, don't bother with a 2nd hand box, who knows what that will be like internally.

Yup exactly, even though a 2nd hand gearbox might come with a warranty it's still a fucking nightmare to remove it again if it would fail and had to be sent back, plus it probably has honestly a higher risk of failure than a freshly repaired original one if done correctly.
I would buy one from the junkyard.

Hello mate , I,m glad you filmed these videos , as your gearbox looks very much like the one in my caddy van , in a nutshell my van & me got brought home on a lorry due to one hell of a howl coming from the diff for just long enough to get it off the road . So now it,s gearbox out & rebuild it . I will be watching all of your vids on this subject , there isn,t much I haven,t repaired , but my usual drive having been landrovers you needed a barrowful of bloody expensive special tools to get them apart then back together right again , V.L. Churchill ones , not cheaper ones , this part I subbed out to the most knowledgeable guy , who has them , so like you I,m doing a car / van gearbox for the first time . I,ve clicked & subscribed . Like the channel and the content James. What resources do you use for researching how to take different components apart?
Do them all, I skimped once and although I fixed a very noisy gearbox, it was still mildly noisy. All the other bearings will have some metal shards in them. The time it takes to put it all together to find out you need to do it all again isn't worth the hassle for a few quid!
Just buy the 2 you need James .... very inspired great video , I may attempt this although the thought of all the parts and remembering where they all go lol scary
It's always worth doing everything - because your time is valuable.
Do all of them mate done a box few year back skimped on parts put it all back together and a seal leaked like a sieve had to take out and do it properly save ur self the agro

There is a shop in NORWICH called Bearingboys Ltd and they will probably have what you need, so local to you. The bearings should have universal spec numbers or codes on them, buy your bearing then buy the seal separately. Should work out cheaper. 👍🏻 if you think this might help.

Whilst yes a 2nd box would be easiest, I think ppl forget James is a content creator, a 2nd gearbox ends this playlist in oneore video. Where as replacing parts etc gives us more content to watch and ALL learn from + James get more satifisfaction from doing it so in-depth and knows it won't fail potentially in a few months.
It is the bearing cage that has broken. It’s job is to keep the ball bearings equally distributed It’s almost expected that they will be damaged once the cage has failed, particularly in a high stress application as a gearbox.

Replace all of the bearings it'll save the hassle of removing the gearbox again.
Either should work as long as he cleans it thoroughly - he is on a budget as he says but I agree, I would change them all if the budget allowed.
He needs to change the bearings in the bell housing case as the one that holds the primary motion shaft is gone, the others don't even move untill the u put it in gear and drive.

Bearings and seals as an set 120 - 150 euro time approx. 2 or 3 days.
Used gearbox in Germany shipped from Spain 50euro+30euro, 134.000km from a seat ibiza.
