I just hate people who attack the people who speak up. This is defense of both sides. What he said was ok. Backlash to what he said is also ok. Speak your truth, but expect backlash. Having backlash is American.

Butker can say whatever he wants, and I agree we don’t have to agree with his views.
The NFL gave a neutral blanket statement and then the Hunt’s had to poke the bear by publicly endorsing Butker. Then the Mayor hopped in during an election year and players from other teams went public with their political views.
They should have taken a page out of the playbook and kept their mouths shut.

Butker’s comment on “ as my teammate’s girlfriend says, Familiarity breeds contempt” is from the song Bejeweled by Taylor Swift. Had no relation to his reference which pertained to priests getting adulation from parishioners. Ironically Swift was talking about a man letting his girlfriend shine on her own with the boyfriend supporting her. And I will say again and correct myself, Travis Kelce was one of the first players to kneel for Black Lives Matters, not one of the first white players. There is a picture online and Black players are standing. I ask again, should Kelce have been fired for doing this on the job like Kaeperneck was? Butker basically gave the same speech at last year’s commencement at Georgia Tech, a public, secular institution so saying it was at a Catholic college also doesn’t hold water.
As for that last point. I was actually completely unaware butker said something similar at gt. Thank you for that. I havent cared enough to look at the speeches in full depth so my opinion is mostly unformed. As a bi man, it feels like its mostly selective outrage at idiotic beliefs (he looks like a saint compared to ariza and rashee) and i did use the catholic collage to sort of defend him. (“He was giving traditional conservative beliefs at a traditional conservative institution” typa vibe). The fact he did it at gt too shoots that down.

This butker situation (no i dont agree with him) reminds me of how i felt about mitt romney only because he is mormon. They have some wacky beliefs so i assumed he was "dangerous", turns out hes a decent human being who just happens to be mormon. So I was wrong

Religion is tricky and rarely do people completely agree on anything so maybe we can be more accepting of differences even when we vehemently disagree including butker.

About Butker he said his beliefs. If you don't agree, you are OK. Move on and don't think about it or care about it. It's his life, not yours. His wife and kids love him and back him up. Everyone else STFU and move on.

Not "basic Catholic social teachings". Butker used his platform to promote the extreme 'Catholic' beliefs that he subscribes to in order to promote his Latin Mass 'Catholic' offshoot that is in constant disagreement with the Pope.

So, let me get this straight. A conservative Catholic gave a commencement speech at a conservative Catholic College, and it was full of red meat to a conservative Catholic audience.
Did he sound like a troglodyte? He sure did to me, but it's not like he was on the dais sticking knives into kittens. He just said something that was unpopular, period.
I don't care what Harrison Butker's views are on abortion, masculinity, the second amendment, politics, etc., I just care how far he can kick a fornicating football when it counts. Period. Is he going to be suspended over what he said, if not, who cares.
Do you really think that would have gotten any traction if it was the kicker for the Panthers, or Browns? I don't think so. Oh well, it's a good problem to have, people scrutinizing what your team does in the off season.
