One of my Favorite EJ. Songs, I learned to sing it, Long ago. ❤🎉🎉🎉 Harri, "Someone Saved my Life Tonight, from Captain Fantastic & the BDC. JUST GORGEOUS! A MUST LISTEN ❤
Always loved this song. Great pic and reaction. If you want to be surprised again you should react to "Have Mercy on the Criminal" off his Don't Shoot me I'm only the Piano Player album. ❤
I grew up in the early '70's an Elton John fan, and my friend who was older was a Beatles fan. Even he admitted to me that Bernie Taupin's lyrics were an advantage over the Beatles, at least in the early part of their career. My friend argued that by the end of the Beatles they had reached parity with what Bernie was doing with Elton. That sounds like an argument with no end to it! Nonetheless, I have to agree with your take Harri that Elton ranks as one of the most important musicians in the last hundred years.
Wow. One of my favorite Elton John songs and not really known to anyone except true EJ fans. Beautiful lyrics and that glorious bridge. A 'deep track' as they say. Yellow Brick Road has some great songs on it that were never released as singles. Songs like this one certainly wouldn't be suitable for AM Top 40 radio back in the day. But great when sitting in favorite chair listening to the album.
Both Madman Across the Water and Yellow Brick Road albums highlight Elton John and Bernie Taupin's partnership. This particular tune is melodic and melancholy.
What else is there to say? Just another terrific song off the brilliant Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. You could throw a dart at a list of the tracks on the album and not be disappointed listening to any one you hit.
Another great tune from the 1973 album, " Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", which made Elton a mega star. The whole album is over stuffed with hit singles and facinatingly diverse tracks. This tune, a hidden gem, made somber by Elton's mood altering piano proficiency and Bernie's poignant lyrics then accompanied by orchestral genius, just a timeless masterpiece. Great reaction Harri. ❤❤ Thanks JD, great choice. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada.❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
@@bkm2797 sign of a great artist when people point to multiple albums as "best". In addition to GBYBR, I often hear fans point to Captain Fantastic as best. However, Madman certainly is a real "dark horse" album for Elton. My appreciation for that album has grown tremendously in recent years.
As always not one bad tune on Madman Across the Water, Levon is so incredible, but the one that makes me tear up everytime is Indian Sunset, the lyrics are heartbreaking, you can see it all roll out as if you were there and apart of it, (who knows maybe I was, lol).
Dan, love these deep cuts by Elton. My personal favorite album was "Captain Fantastic" and "Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player". No doubt "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is deserving of the top spot. Keep it up!!👍👍👍
@@Imadrummin I always thought I was the oddball with loving "Don't Shoot Me", especially "Crocodile Rock", which is the song that grabbed me and never let me go. Has been something of a guilty pleasure for me; I let other kids at the time talk me into believing this was a "silly" song. However, it's quintessentially Elton. And I would even go so far to say that "Don't Shoot Me" may be the most quintessentially Elton of all of the albums. That said, I feel GBYBR, for me, is his masterpiece. The cinematic scope of the album and its incredible experimentation are just so incredibly impactful, which is what I directly experienced as a 14 year old boy listening to "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. I thought at the time this was the greatest recorded track I had ever heard; 51 years later I still feel the same way! Thanks for your kind remarks!
Lovin' the deep dives Harri! Any Elton fans here should check out a vid "reflections on goodbye yellow brick road ALBUM" on Jon Blackstone's channel. These songs are even more incredible when you see the writing process...some of these amazing songs were written in 20 minutes! Genius.
Benny and the Jets, and Philadelphia Freedom, both performed by Elton on "Soul Train". The bass by Dee Murray on "Freedom" is so wicked, it should be against the law!
@@tombeyerlein3813 very touchy subject. Jon Blackstone, who has a great program looking at the "Elton John Band 1970-75" actually recorded with both Dee, and later with Nigel. Apparently from Jon, when speaking with Dee (deceased since 1993) said the latter stated Elton did not come to them to announce this, but, instead, someone within the organization came to both Dee and Nigel to inform them "their serv ices would no longer be needed". The mystery remains why was this done? And who initiated it? Jon Blackstone's hypothesis is after the Thanksgiving '74 concert at Madison Square Garden where John Lennon appeared on stage that Elton had reached his peak, was losing interest in his music, and wanted to change his sound. I remember being very broken hearted when I bought Elton's 1976 album "Rock of the Westies" and finding out that Dee and Nigel were no longer in the band. As a 17 year old crazy fan, I simply could not understand why this was done.
I first heard an Elton song when I was 10 or 11 on the radio.....i absolutely loved it and I loved how good his voice sounded. Even way back then, 50 years ago...his songs to me were on a completely different level. I couldn't get enough!!
Great to see You hearing more and more of Elton's songs. 2 of the most beautiful(and best) songs he ever did were Pinky, and the other one is Harmony. I've been a huge Elton John fan since I was a young teenager in the 1970's,...and those 2 songs are still.....2 or my most favorite from him!!
One of the lesser known songs on this album but one more example of just how great Goodbye Yellowbrick Road was. Every song on this album is strong. Personally this is one of my favorites. Just love the melody and feel of the song. Perfection.
DJB-This was an outstanding submission choice from one of the greatest albums of his career, "Goodbye The Yellow Brick Road." I thoroughly enjoyed the song and Harri's review. Bravo to both of you.👏👏
Well you've plenty of great songs on this classic to choose from! So many wonderful tunes, all different but fantastic in their own way, it's Elton John's 'deep cuts' such as this song which l love the most, his lesser known tracks equally as good as his well known 'hits' That's the case with all his albums, especially the early records.
Something not usually noticed is how important the band was to Elton's success. In the writing/recording process, each band member was responsible for coming up with what they were going to do for each song...with no input from Elton or anyone else. It's how they could create music so quickly. The double album this came from was written, recorded, and produced in 2 1/2 weeks. The band was Nigel Olsson drums/vocals, Dee Murray bass/vocals, and Davey Johnstone guitars/vocals. I read in Peter Townsend's autobiography that when Elton and the band came down to do 'Pinball Wizard' for the rock opera, he was astonished at how quickly they worked. The whole song...writing, music, vocals, backing vocals, overdubs, everything, took less than four hours.
There waas a huge flourishing of eclectic music back then, anybody with talent could get a band off the ground, and there was huge talent arising - we were spoiled, the new tunes kept coming out - there was crossover, black and white styles blending, and it really seemed for a while as if race problems in the US were fading away - it is better than it was, but not finished yet
I have an interesting idea for a video Harri - how about you do a countdown of your top 20 or 30 musical acts - of course we all know you will put the Beatles at # 1 !!!
Here is my Top 20: 1 Pink Floyd 2 RUSH 3 Neil Young 4 Louis Armstrong 5 Bing Crosby 6 Ella Fitzgerald 7 Led Zeppelin 8 Rolling Stones 9 Genesis 10 Supertramp 11 Elton John 12 Beatles 13 Gordon Lightfoot 14 Eagles 15 Styx 16 Scorpions 17 Black Sabbath 18 Metallica 19 Billie Holliday 20 Journey
Love your appreciation for Elton
That string arrangement/ crying guitar solo is brilliant.

Elton John is definitely a legend, grew up listening to his music and I’m so glad I was able to see him in concert
Awesome lyrics with beautifully sculpted music/vocals.
Nice, gradually getting the whole album done. This was Elton and Bernie at their peak.
Always loved this song. Great pic and reaction. If you want to be surprised again you should react to "Have Mercy on the Criminal" off his Don't Shoot me I'm only the Piano Player album. ❤

This and Madman Across the Water are my 2 fav Elton John songs by far
Wow. I haven't heard this song in decades! Thank you for reminding me of this song.

I was 9 when this album came out and I rode my purple schwinn with a sissy bar 12 miles to Wenzel's in Downey and it bought with my own money.

Great, great, great album.
I was lucky enough to see him live right after he released Don't Shoot me. Greatest live act ever.

Layed back feel of this song in no small part to Nigel Olsson's languid and beautiful drumming.
Absolutely. Nigel is the MAN! Also love his drumming on Better Off Dead from Captain Fantastic.
@@brucedillinger9448 oh yeah! We definitely will have to get THAT track played on this channel!
No doubt in my mind whatsoever in his long and storied career, THIS was Elton's greatest album!
Oooh I'm torn between Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Madman Across The Water.

Goodbye & Madman are two of his best albums
For me, this is Elton's last thoroughly great album. He had a brilliant run in the early '70s.

Dee was so great. How ridiculous is it that Elton John fired him, not once but twice?
