Thank you nobody tests these on sideband for some reason but I don't know anybody that runs a.m. everybody runs sideband so that's where I wanted to know how it performed just ordered one thank you

Thank you for sharing. I have one of these in my car using a Firestik 4'
with a coil base mounted on a mag mount center roof of the car.
(Chrysler 300, a large car). I did an SWR check on my Uniden Bearcat CB
radio with no SSB and it was 1.05 at worst. (That is my next upgrade, I
am looking at a Galaxy 900 series mobile radio with SSB and all the
bells and whistles) I have not power checked it yet, but I do have that
meter as well. I am just excited to talk on it, that testing power has not come
up....yet. I have seen many AM tests and most show peak at 180 watts on this
radio. That is actually not bad as it is rated 250 watts max on the AM. I
would have expected a little more, but not bad like I said.
The mosfet transistor approach using 1 to drive 8 mosfets seems a strange
configuration, and the fact that it is low input for high power is
strange. A standard 11 meter CB (not SSB) doesn't drive more than 3.8 watts
typically. It is great in this application, but stinks for SSB since 12
watts is all it is rated to handle for input. (I have also read it can do up to 24 watts, so not
sure what the actual limit is for input) I know many people who
have blown the front end on these by over driving the input. So, this
radio is great as a stand alone amplifier and is cheap, and works very
well. It has it's limits for sure. So, my two cents would be to keep the gain down on the
radio TX when running SSB to keep from blowing the amp on the front end. I have seen tests at
450 watts on SSB so your 400 watts in this test is not far off from that.
At 170.00 American dollars, this amp is very affordable as well. My whole rig is less than 300.00 and
I have talked more than 30 miles land, and up to 3000 miles on skip with this amp. I have
tal;ked to Hawaii from Arizona for example. I have talked to the Bahamas, and almost every state in the
    continental United States.
Again thanks for sharing, take care, 73s.

This amp will do 250w max your meter is lying to you..
I recommend removing the pre driver if you disable the 1 driving 8 and drive it as a strate 8 it is clean AF on SSB..
I'm driving it with 25w in to 8 with an HTX-10 soon to be replaced by a Lincoln II+ and it is clean on my scope.. 250w out
Runs good on FM and AM
FM I run it at 170w
    AM 50w swinging 200.

Yes I agree the amp is only rated at 250 / 300 w. You also might want to check the reflex coming back from the amplifier to the radio. Cuz you could have a mix match and have high swrs which will show more wattage than what you should have

A battery isn’t giving it 14.5 volts that amp requires to run full output. I’m not dogging you but you have no clue as to what that amp requires to run at its maximum output. Your meter is wrong for one. That amp uses different transistors from what amps used to run before. iRF520 are in that amp . 1 driving 8. They came out with a high drive version that has a -7 db attenuator in it so it can be driven with 35 pep for full output. I don’t think yours is the HD version & if not you are over driving it anyway. At 14 volts it’s a 300 pep amplifier. I removed my driver because they sound bad on ssb. Now it sounds perfect. I took out the -7 db attenuator & being the drivers gone I drive it with less than the driver did & 300 pep is what it does.

Weird how it flattens out on setting 3, 4 ,5 ,6 not much change, looks like 350 max pep. Not bad.

Nice video Michael, thank you for sharing! I couldn't make out what you said in your video re: batteries. I need a battery to run my 503, what kind of battery are you using?

You are looking at forward momentum of the needle & it’s not doing that much. Hold an audio don’t just audio real quick. That amp does 300 watts on 6 . The needle is so long on that Pdc the forward momentum shows a lot for a millisecond & drops back. Audio long enough for the needle to rest where it’s gonna.

Is there any way of improving SSB audio without disabling the predriver?

    • @homersaypian3798
      @homersaypian3798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@harrybatt998, Sideband is a multi frequency mix. It will always sound a little weird (audio wise.) That being said, these are amps, so garbage in, garbage out. If you are looking for better “audio” then look for a radio that does better on sideband. If you mean power instead of “audio,” then you’ll have to have the driver transistor upgraded, or removed (converted to high drive.) My best advice if you want more power is to sell your amp and buy a bigger one. 73s
