Aikido is a magical art that opens the mind to a dimension greater than sport. For example, returning hostile energy to the sender, or learning to let go, or understanding that you are one with your partner or the universe, understanding that without contact there is no confrontation, etc...
Having said that, I can understand why many people are offended by the practice and effectiveness of aikido.
But at the end of the day, no martial art protects us from violence, and no martial art is truly complete. That's why fighters looking for maximum efficiency in combat sports (UFC) practice all disciplines, mixing boxing, muy thai, judo, wrestling, BJJ and so on.
There is no such thing as a good or bad martial art. For Aikido practitioners, I'll add boxing and judo.

I am so fortunate to have trained with him many years ago when he first opened his dojo in LA! I miss him greatly! So sorry he passed at such a young age! Salute to him!!

what many people miss with this drill (especially the anti-Aikido crowd) is that the emphasis is really on footwork. You are learning to move in circular motions in relationship to your opponent. With your movement you are breaking your opponent's rhythm.

My life changed the minute I took the time to understand true Aiki. I’ve studied 3 others style. And I find all of them in Aiki. But with no violence.

Stop giving explanations to anti-aikido crowd. We don't need explanations. You have just to see demonstration to laugh ....and footwork is in every sport ...

Through understanding you come into the motion and movement and guide the natural momentum of adversarial energy.
This is to be applied to social situations to disarm needless enmity and ridiculous bullying/imposed-imperialism.
been in Aikido stance since 1997, 24/7.

Around 5:35 he says to extend the hand in order to have proper spacing. That is directly contrary to Sensei Kondo's instruction from the Daito Ryu. The reason someone would grab your hand as a samurai during the Edo period would be to either stop you from accessing the katana, wakizashi and tanto or prevent you from attacking them with a weapon already in your hand. Thus if the wrist grab is to stop you from accessing a weapon system, your hands would be near your hips. And even if someone already had a weapon in their hand, the person would maneuver first, block or jam second and then try kote gaeshi NOT just grab the wrist as it is difficult to catch a stabbing motion at the wrist area.

Instead of seeing the confrontation as a "fight", it seems better to see it more as a "dance" when the opponent's moves are initiated.

To ACLA Master Aikido Instructor, what is the significance of breath power in aikido? Is it similar to Chi in chinese martial arts, & breathing from the tantien or tanden(?), which is the source of chi from a few inches below the belly button? The Aikido book I had did not go into any detail on the definition or technique of breath power (Chi/Ki development) & its proper application. I hope you can help me on this.
