Capybaras need others of their kind around, because they live in family groups. In other words folks, stop getting exotic animals as pets because you are contributing to their demise and to the destruction of their homes.

Problem is, many of these people just want an exotic pet to show off or feel special. They don't do fill research into the animal's needs or just provide a bare minimum. Exotic pets may be taken from the wild as babies or bred in appalling conditions by people cashing in on the trend for fancy pets. Wild populations can be damaged this way by the demand for pets. Then when the novelty wears off, the pet gets too big/messy/expensive, they end up neglected or dumped.
