It also deliberately reduce the chance of erupting lava from volcanoes since energy mass under the beneath of the deep surface is coming out of the air by the drill holes. But the question is how long such a well hole remain active with such a high pressure as it is gushing up over a long period of time.
There's no more efficient energy storage means than making metal. That metal will be used again and again for 100's or more years all the while that re-use also re-uses the energy used to make the metal. If the Icelanders feel ripped off they can simply charge more. I think half the time environmentalists just want a seat at the table and to be considered relevant. I can't believe the degree to which they fight almost every new energy source project. They don't like coal, oil, gas, nuclear, hydro, wind, and here we see they don't even like geo-thermal. I think we should turn off their electricity, take away their cars, and ban them from flying, then we'll see how much they don't like new energy projects.
I'm also wondering why anyone would have anything against geothermal. Sure it produces a very minimal amount of greenhouse gases, but really nothing compared to the way 90% of the world's electricity is generated. Besides the geothermal gas can be use to produce methanol that can run carscleaner then gasoline. Currently there is a company in Iceland that builds plants that can extract methanol from geothermal gas with minimal processing. In fact Iceland can rely on it's methanol production alone to run their entire vehicle fleet without importing any fossil fuel. I agree with your point that, being against every solution isn't a good approach. The real way to tackle energy generation is to do small changes in every technology (especially renewable) and keep a diversified way of producing energy until nuclear fusion and solar/wind/geothermal become more financially available.
I've always wondered. Why is Iceland called so when it doesn't have much ice and Greenland called so when it has no green?
It was Viking marketing. They were trying to attract colonists to Greenland and deter people from coming to Iceland.
