Yeah, I agree with you both. In the original script, it would've been Grandad that undertook the parachute training, and it was him that deliberately fell down the holes/open cellars, anytime he needed easy money. Settling out of court in the process.
The Trotters were broke in the episode, and Rodney had spent the last of their money on sun tan lotion in the middle of winter. So Grandad's reason for doing it was probably just to help them out financially

I preferred Grandad. To me Uncle Albert as a character could sometimes get a bit too unbelievable to be based in reality from which something funny could come, like all the times he sunk ships. I find someone or something funny if they are just realistic enough to be believable and relatable.
Grandad was much more down to earth because everything about him is more believable.

    “Has anyone seen my hat?”
Is actually a very very important line in history of the show.
It shows that no matter what tragedy might befall the Trotters, might befall the cast, the humour is still alive. How brilliant how clever, to so poignantly throw a clear symbol of a character (grandads hat) into his grave with him, only for the audience to realize it was the vicars hat instead. That line, Has anyone seen my hat? probably saved the show, and proved it could still be funny despite such a sad loss.

I'm currently going through my complete boxset. Currently on series 7. Next episode is Chance Of A Lunchtime when Raquel revealed she was pregnant with Damien. Only Fools is one of those classic sitcoms where you don't remember your first episode. It was always there in the background.

I believe it's one of the main things that makes this show so beloved. They could do the comedy, they could do the tragedy but what made it special was that it could do both at the same time. Not only Grandad/Lennards passing but the broken elevator scene between Del and Rodney and my favourite - Grandad telling a really heartfelt story of the way while in the air raid shelter, then it pulls back to show where they are.

Does anyone know how to watch the lost episode that for some reason was never televised. It involved grandad & the sale of Christmas trees. All I've seen is a few short clips. Rip Leonard pierce & buster merryfield

@@OnlyFoolsHorses yes I see I'm sorry. I miss the days when their was no copyright issues & you could say what you want & how you want to say it. I guess the point I'm making is DVD release of of&h where some episodes have had deleted scenes or been altered either due to copyright or its content not being acceptable. Bloody ridiculous society has become with what's right & what's wrong

Controversial opinion, I think Only Fools and Horses (1981) jumped the shark after Grandad's passing and the death of Lennard Pearce in 1984, I think he was forgotten after Uncle Albert was introduced.

It went down hill after series 4 in this regard. They tried to keep it the same during some of series 5 and in the to hull and back episode but they drifted away from the whole two brothers and their grandad/uncle wheeling and dealing ways. They really do neglect the grandad era in my opinion,, if theres repeats on its always post 1990 episodes,, when you can see and feel the feminist undertones.

To be fair the first episode after his death "happy returns" (s4 ep 1) just didn't have him in. 2 old dears in the shop asked how he was (implying he was ill) and that was it.
It was episode 2 where he had died.
