    The Old Ones were gods that created the Eldar and Orks to fight against the Necrons but were defeated and hunted to extinction by the Necrons and Ctan/Star Gods.

    The Old Ones were gods who were wiped out by the C'Tan, using Necrons as their army. The Old Ones created Eldar and Orks to fight back but it was to no avail. This was the War in Heaven. The Old Ones were gone, the Eldar and Orks lingered. The C'Tan were overthrown by the Necrons who rebelled against their enslavement. The Necrons decided to hibernate in the hope Eldar and Orks would be gone too when they awoke millions of years later. I will also add that some weapons and technology used during these times, as well as during the Dark Age of Technology endure in some places across the galaxy. They are generally referred to as Relics, often used as plot points or MacGuffins in various 40K storylines. The Webway for example is seen as technology created by the Old Ones to move across the galaxy, which is now utilised by The Eldar. The Emperor was working on developing this technolofgy to benefit mankind before the Horus Heresy fucked that up.

    HH serves as a prequel to 40k, but because it's so expansive, you could get lost in that subsection alone and feel content and fulfilled. This video can leave you feeling routed and without a strong foundation and that's normal, you've only just got one piece of the puzzle. In the war in heaven, you have the Necrons + C'tan vs. Old Ones + Eldar + Orks. The Old Ones were killed off, C'tan were shattered and imprisoned, Necrons went to sleep, and the Eldar spread out across the galaxy. The Orks just devolved into fighting and being silly boys. Bricky's video is good, but it does throw a lot of terms that you don't really need to know early on so it is quite overwhelming.
    As for the Secret Level episode questions, I believe that episode takes place after Space Marine 2 and is the latest stuff in the 40k timeline (around the 42nd millenium) and the creature they fought was a sorcerer of Tzeentch, once human but changed through a lot of magic.

    For the secret level episode. If you’re talking about the group of blue glowy guys those are tzaangor (zan-gore), a sort of mutant subspecies of human. If you mean the giant one it’s a chaos daemon. Both are servants of Tzeentch, the chaos god of change.
    The Tzaangor are used in the “thousand sons” faction in the tabletop game and that particular daemon doesn’t have a model as far as I know. But in lore, they serve Tzeentch.

    Okay, secret level;
    Right now in the lore there is a popularized character named Titus. This all stems from the console game Space, Marine and Space Marine 2. Which just came out.
    Titus is a member of the ultramarines, the Space Marine Legion led by Robutae Gilliman
    (Robot girlyman, rowboat gorillaMan)
    The secret level episode "and they shall know no fear" expands upon titus's lore by showing him as a child being recruited. As far as timeline, it is in the current era of lore. As for how close it is to modern day, I have no idea. There are a few major events that have happened in the current lore and I am unsure if they are covered in the game Space Marine. 2 or even mentioned in it. If they are then Titus would be considered lore accurate.
    Hope this helps

      To add extra clarification, Warhammer Fantasy was first and really really big for long period of time, had recently seen resurgence again as The Old World and together with video games such as Vermintide, and Total War Warhammer series out has never really died.
      It's lore is just as deep, and is really entertaining and definitely with ones attention.
      Two notes: no, it's not "just a planet" within 40k universe. It's separate universe completely. It was only one authors idea he was toying with and has been written away years ago. God's work differently old ones with differently and are most likely still alive etc.
      Second: Warhammer Fantasy is THE universe where the entire series gets it's name from: it's that universe that has THE TITULAR WARHAMMER that's being used as brand on all their products ;)

PS: it started 60M years ago, not 60K... the Old Ones are the Gods that the Necrontyr asked for help first to become immortal, who told them no, then they asked the C'tan, the Gods eating stars, for help becoming immortal, who said yes, but then ate their soul and made the Necrontyr race into immortal space "Terminators", now called Necrons, forcing them to help them kill the Old Ones, which they did, ALL OF THEM, but then the Necrons turned on the C'tan, broke them into pieces and trapped them in giant tombs, to be used in war... lastly, Secret Level EP5 takes place after the new Space Marine 2 game ends...

    The thing to always remember, 40K is nearly 40 years old, it's lore has been growing for years from a small table top game to what it is today. There's innumerable bits of retconned lore, fan theories, abandoned plotlines, and just flat out ignored bits. Don't worry about knowing everything, just enjoy the stuff you like- it's a little like Star Trek, you don't need to watch decades of the shows and books, it's fine if you just like the cartoon, or in Warhammer's case, it's fine if you like the games and just listen to a few lore podcast episodes
    Just google the official supplemental rule book "Dance Steps for GW's Space Hulk Game", to realize that while it's a serious grimdark setting, it's also one that has never taken itself too seriously
    Just as an aside, the secret level episode? That's essentially Space Marine 3, it's something that happens to Titus after the ending of the Space Marine 2 game

    Something super interesting is that humanity is probably a perfected life form created by the Old Ones. We aren't as emotionally sensitive or psychically powerful as the Aeldari, but we have a far easier time spreading out and reprsoducing quickly. Not as quick as the Orks, and not as physically strong, but we also arent dependent on violence to increase our own strength and intelligence.
    We are actually a balancing point between the Orks and Aeldari. They are both extremes, one of the mind, and one of the body. We possess some strength in both, but we lack their crippling biology based weaknesses. We have the potential to one day master both without the same drawbacks.
    I always thought this proved that we were made by the Old Ones. A well balanced final product, with a slow start, but one day could be the new apex species in the Milky Way galaxy. However we do have a crippling weakness that can also be our greatest strength. The need for Faith. Our greatest insecurity, and source of manipulation, but also an unstoppable Spear when united and focused towards our enemies.
    10,000 years of sacrifice and prayer have super juiced the Emperor into what is essentially a human God of Order, instead of Chaos. His own resurrected son Roboute Guilliman could barely be in the same room as his father even though his body was rotted away almost entirely. His psychic presence felt like it was everywhere, crushing and drowning out Guillimans slightest thoughts, but felt like a totally different person. Broken, unfocused, but magnitudes larger and stronger than before.

    Okay, tabletop;
    Warhammer 40K is primarily a tabletop Army simulator. Two players Fielding armies and then taking a turn-based round to gather points and achieve victory conditions. After five turns whoever has the most points wins.
    To start think of the collection of models and the tabletop as two separate entities.
    The collection side is more often than not the most expensive and time consuming side.
    First, choose a faction that you want to collect, build and paint. make it your own, The rule of cool applies, As in paint it Anyway you want make any lore for it that you want in your head and enjoy. The models are not cheap because they are not supposed to be. This is a hobby, not just a game. If you have any reservations about the cost, talk to people that collect pokémon or magic gathering for completion or people that collect guns or cars. You're paying for the hobby.
    The game itself is quite cheap. You can play it with painted popsicle sticks using toilet paper rolls and tissue boxes as terrain. You can play on your kitchen floor. I know because that's where I started many years ago.
    After you have collected a sizable Army, you can move on to the second part of the hobby which is the tabletop.
    Each faction has a rule book known as a codex. This codex has all the rules and specs for each unit within that faction.
    There is a core rule book which has all the rules for gameplay. It also has the rules for board setup involving terrain and objective markers. All of which are needed to score primary objectives and secondary objective points. Which of course in turn leads to your victory conditions.
    Find your first victim, and the two of you collectively will decide as to what size of game you want to play.
    500 points for a small game
    1,000 points for a medium game
    2,000 points for a standard game
    These points dictate the size of the army that you can field as in the codecs. Each model has a point value. For a quick reference, a. Squad of Astra militarum may cost you 75 points for 10 models. But a squad of Space Marines may cost you 350 points for five.
    Once you have decided on the point value you can begin building your army list. This is also when you decide what style of game it's going to be as per the core rulebook and then you set your table up.
    From here it is dice rolling and I mean lots and lots of dice. Five rounds of tactical movement shooting melee charging psychic powers and at the end of it which team scored the most points takes the cup.
    With the nearly unlimited amount of strategy that can be put into a single game, each one will take between two and six plus hours to complete. It is an absolutely amazing way to kill an afternoon.
    I hope this helps,
    Cheers
    -Alpharious-

    I did some quick math to see how many psychers that have been sacrificed to keep the Emperor alive since the Horus Heresy, and heres what I got:
    As stated, the Imperium needs to sacrifice 1,000 psychers every single day, and there are 365 days in a year, so that means 365,000 have been sacrificed a day. Multiply that by 10,000 years, and the Imperium has sacrificed over 3.65 billion psychers.

    Summary: The Necrontir were shortlived and live in radiated worlds; they discovered the Old Ones among the stars with power to create life and asked for their help but were refused; Necrontir declared war on the Old Ones and were defeated; Necrontir discovered other powerful beings called the C'Tan who deceived them and turned them into robotic automatons bereft of self consciousness except their Dynasts and the Silent King who led them; The C'Tan waged war against their rivals, the Old Ones using the Necrons as their foot soldiers; The Old Ones created new species like the Eldar and the Orks to aid them but were ultimately defeated; Szarekh the Silent King schemed against the C'Tan causing infighting among them until they were reduced to only five; Szarekh then began a rebellion and broke the remaining C'Tan with one fleeing the galaxy and the Void Dragon encountering the Emperor of Mankind Millennia before his ascension to the Throne of Mankind, who defeated it and buried it in Mars before it had been colonized. The Void Dragon is theorized to be the reason for all great technological advancements made by the Cult Mechanicus of Mars. Szarekh exiled himself and a few of his followers and ordered the entombing of the entire Necron race before he left. The Necron departure from the scene allowed for the new species to develop. After the general lore by Bricky, you can also check out MajorKill and Weshammer for more interesting stories and they also answer some of the questions newbies ask about the setting. There is Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy (adapted in creative assembly's Total War franchise) similar concepts but with different settings.

A few years later, they made a sci-fi setting called Warhammer 40 000. The Space Marine games and Dawn of War games are set here. Then, they ended Fantasy Battles and reset the setting and made Age of Sigmar. There are several smaller games set here. Despite the common name and chaos gods, 40k is separate from the other two.

    The old ones aren't the Necrontyr. The old ones are sorta like the "creators" of life in the galaxy around 60-ish million years ago that went extinct after the War In Heaven. They were the ones who the Necrontyr originally went to for aid, but as they rejected their plea for help, the Necrontyr turned to the C'tan(Star gods) for aid instead which led to the creation of the Necrons and the beginning of the War in Heaven.

    Okay, The Learning curve;
    As many people have said and as many times as it will be said again, the lore is deep, the lore is vast and the lore is confusing.
    For the vast majority of us that follow around people starting and enjoying this journey. We all appreciate when you're wrong. It's okay to be wrong. It's okay to miss something. It's okay to not understand. We are more than happy to help you fill in the blanks from what you've missed. We got you. Ask the comment section, anything you want and we'll help you out.
    Taking notes on this subject is extremely difficult because it's such a vast amount of time and with each new section of time that is opened up, it brings with it new characters, new factions, and a whole new spin-off of lore. Be patient, it's not difficult or complicated, It's just steep.
    As other commenters have said it's millions of years of lore.
    And that's prior to humans hitting the scene.
    There is a very common saying;
    Every truth is a lie and every lie is a truth.
    This is what makes sorting out the lore of 40K so difficult. It was written by multiple writers who were not in communication with each other prior to the newer runs of books and short stories. They have their own publishing company called the black Library, this is a grab all catch-all for anything related to Warhammer 40K. Prior to about 12 years ago, you could submit writing to the black Library and if it met the standards of their writing codes and ethics, they would publish or print your short story into the magazine that they ran called White dwarf. If your writing was received positively, they would reach out to you to write a novella or even a full-on novel. As the years progressed, the Lord just started stacking up and stacking up and stacking up and it started to bulge. What could be considered real and accurate. There's four different origin stories for the Emperor of mankind, but which one is the right one? Nobody knows. So instead of unifying or kibashing the old pieces of work, they left it up to interpretation.
    Now however, over the past 12 years or so, the black Library allows you to submit writing to them, but they will not print it. Instead, you write about a topic or a faction and if they can squeeze it into the current narrative and lore without it changing anything that other writers are submitting and writing about, they will reach out and ask you to write about it. But if not, they will offer you a topic if you are skilled enough or if they like the way your writing style flows. This way Games workshop and the black Library are able to keep control of the narrative. They're able to let the lore build without bloat.
    This bloat is why the ultramarines are viewed as the most powerful Space Marine faction because so many people wrote about ultramarines and it kind of caused power creep in novels. So the lore behind the ultramarines is thick and convoluted.
    Bricky does a great job of bringing all of this bloat into a more streamlined easy to digest nugget, he may not be accurate on every topic, but at least he covers the broad strokes and lets the viewer. Understand that this is just a skimmer across the surface.
    I hope this helps and I hope you continue your journey. I recently found you guys for your solo leveling playlist and I'm subbed up because of it. So I look forward to your journey
    Cheers
    -Alpharious-

My personal favorite is Oculus Imperialis but since his videos are from the perspective of an Imperium historian within the 40k universe, he uses terms and jargon that would not be easily understood by newer fans. That being said, I still recommend him after getting into the universe.

    So on the matter if gods in 40k.
    Think of this term as more of a description of class rather than type of being.
    Beings named "gods" in 40k have usually different origins, powers, function in different ways, are different tier of brings (anything from galaxy spanning AI, imagination of whole race coalesced around living being or sentient continent-sized malicious clouds of particular emotion)
    The Warp is parallel dimension (not pocket dimension, it's something different), mirror dimension, a spirit realm, Stranger Things upside down, a reflection of real space. Where real space is created of matter, energy and governed by physics, Warp is created from emotions, thoughts, worship, sentience, souls. It's incredibly difficult for material beings to understand and navigate, and similarly real space is incredibly difficult for nonmaterial entities (like Demons) to understand and navigate as well (what do you mean time is linear!?!?).
    As Warp is parallel, sort of overlaid but separated by the veil from real space, most sentient being like humans, elves etc have "warp presence" which in essence is how big per of their souls is being casts into/exists in the warp. Psykers have really big presence there that allows them to actually draw upon the power roiling around, but also makes them "bright" and very visible for demons (think campfire compared to candle).
    Now with above we can finally address the confusion regarding gods and old ones:
    Old Ones are material alien species, beings of (almost) godlike psychic and scientific power. They travel the galaxy creating shaping and guiding life. Are extremely strong psykers and have very big psychic presence (to the point of some people suggesting they are half and half)
    Necrons are different separate species that wanted to get secrets of immortality from Old Ones by any means necessary to the point they sold their souls to...
    C'tan (the "gods" of material universe) are completely material beings with no warp presence. They are sentient clouds of energy that drain stars until they become cold and inert, essentially extinguishing all life that relies on stars (like sun) for survival. They are so embellished with physics of the universe that they can manipulate spaciotemporal reality at will, and destruction of one will essentially mess up some of the laws of physics, that's why they had to be shattered, not killed.
    Chaos gods are completely warp based entities that literally cannot ever personally enter real space - moving across the veil costs energy and the is not enough energy in the universe for something so large to move through. That's why they gave to rely on possession, people believing in them and demons moving across (who are little pieces of them). They are almost planet sized being created from emotions in the warp: like attracts like, collecting together. At some point there was enough Hate, Ambition, Fear of Death and at later point Excess in one place for it to spontaneously to develop malicious sentience, looking only to grow larger and larger.
    Emperor of Mankind started out as extremely powerful human psyker, so a material being with very very large warp presence. As the events of ten thousand years unfolded, he became more and more godlike due to constant psychic feedback of faith and adoration of untold billions of humans believing him to be god and by this alone feeding his psychic presence, actually indeed making him one (or being as close to one as any other of similar class in 40k universe)

    So 40k is nearly 40 years old. With continuous redevelopment, 10 editions, hundreds of books/novellas/short stories, it can easily be overwhelming. I would recommend sticking with some of these more broad high level vids until you find a faction or two that particularly interest you and then focus on that. Faction history tends to be individually contained, you don't necessarily need to know the setting in deep detail to understand them.
    From a novels standpoint, I like the Caiaphas Cain series because it follows regular human soldiers in the grimdark future. Very easy to get into that series IMO.

    For the boardgame (tabletop to be pedantic as theree is no board), technically the original one would be warhammer fantasy, with 40k being the satirical sci-fi version. 40k has since then matured and overtook the original in popularity, and with the release of the Horus Heresy books even spawned a spin-off tabletop setting that allows you to play out the civil war, creatively called "Horus Heresy" that is usually shortened to 30k.
    Also, the strategy games the white boy (new to the channel) keeps mentioning are the dawn of war games. Very good, but distinctly minor parts of the setting as warhammer has, is and will be a tabletop game first and foremost, with most of the lore and story being attached to models and found in codexes (the faction rulebooks), that is then expanded on by blavk library authors in books.
