    Great video! You reminded me why I like the C01 so much! Thanks for making it! I have made literally 1000s of commercial recordings using the C01. I run it into an Avalon 737, or UAD Unison mic pre. Your description is very accurate! It is a beast. Very warm... Technique is essential. But when using a nice mic pre with an EQ, I can dial up beautiful, lush, U87- like tones. I call it the Poor Man's Neumann! Heck I bought 2 just in case one fails! It does have a tiny bit self-generated noise, but if you have any music going in the background you you will not hear it at all. To me the C01 is the absolute best mic for the money- period!

      Yeah bro. I had mine since 2007. Had to sell it for financial reasons but already thinking about getting another one. Best mic I ever had. Love that thing. I ran it through the 2i2 as you saw. What do you think would be a great step up from that interface? Had to sell that one as well but looking to maybe get another one. Yup. C01 is dead quiet too. Picks up basically no background noise with zero EQ AND I live right next to a highway. It's a dream mic for sure.

      Home Studio Basics As far as interfaces go, there are lots of good ones, in various price ranges. I have used the very inexpensive Lexicon Lambda (was fairly impressed with sound of the Lambda) to a MOTU 828, to my current UAD Apollo 8. You can find used MOTUs out there for really good prices. I know of several nice sounding Albums that were made using a MOTU 828, coupled with the Samson C01. You really don’t have to break the bank to have nice-sounding, professional gear.

    Hey bro!, I really want to buy the Samson CO1U (usb) microphone. But I've been hearing bad reviews about the sound quality becoming much lower after the Windows 10 update. Hey man! I was using the Samson C01 XLR Condenser version actually. I would recommend you go the same route. All you would need is something like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and an XLR cable. I don't know if you had considered that option but it's much better than a simple USB set up. I was using the 2i2 in this video but you may not need the extra inputs. Definitely go with the Solo 3rd generation though for Windows 10. Thanks so much for the sub and love! Keep me posted!

    Hi. In the past I've owned the more expensive condenser mics such as the Audio Technica AT4040 and also a AT2035. I currently own Samson C01 (XLR version not USB) and have had it for about 2 years. I use a small Wharfadale Connect 502 mixer to power it up and use Reaper to record it. It being a mid size diaphragm mic I wasn't sure what to expect but I did see quite a few favourable reviews on it so bought one. In using it I would say in a blind test this $100 mic sounds a lot more expensive then I first assumed. I did quite a lot of extensive testing on it by getting isolated voice tracks of famous songs from singers such as Freddy Mercury, Lou Graham etc. Once I EQ'ed the vocal track to match the singers I then cleaned up the my vocal track and popped it into the instrumental version of some of those singers songs and was very surprised at how good and clear it sounds in the mix. The sound was very professional!! (I know Freddy was using the AKG C414 which is an excellent mic but expensive but I found the C01 when EQ'ed was right up there). And that's the key......the EQ ing of the mic by testing it to an isolated vocal track (I used the Butch Vig vocal plugin for eq, compression and saturation). Its a bright and open sounding mic but very natural and doesn't color the sound which is great as you have more room to color and give it character in post. And it is not just cardioid but Super Cardioid. This a very important detail to consider because most of us are recording either in our bedroom or study room which is not the most ideal way. Because it rejects noise both from back and sides more then most condenser mics you get close to no external noise from your room. My office where I record vocals has no treatment except carpet and some curtains but being a mid size condensor and super cardioid it picks up very little around it except the front. Its one of the best mic for noise rejection!! There will be noise floor on the C01 if you turn up the gain on the mixer to a hotter level. However this is not necessary in this day and age of using a digital DAW (back in analog days that was more critical and important). In conclusion in my testing this mic it has a very natural open sound. Crisp but not harsh. In a blind test its on same level with far more expensive mics out there. And it is Super Cardioid which is important because most of us are recording in untreated rooms. 😃👍

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The C01 is and will always be an excellent mic! What I've been noticing in testing new ones out is that most sound really good and compete with mics way out of the price range (as you've alluded to). I think EQ is super important and probably the main consideration to make. If you have a good base to start with, you can make most any vocals sound good imo. And yeah, the Super Cardioid thing just adds the cherry on top as it's even better at blocking out sound in less-than-ideal rooms. I live near a busy highway and as you can tell from the video, it didn't pick up any of that. It's crazy to think that the C01 was going for a measly $45 a couple months ago on amazon due to overstock. I can't believe how underrated it is STILL. I may have to do a video review on it.

      Hey man thank you! I like the C01 best, but for hard rock it may be a bit too warm? Idk, it really depends on the flavor of sound you prefer. AT2020 is a bit more crisp sounding, but still kind of mellow.

    I was checking your review page and you do an excellent job, could you recommend me for voice and use it in my room, the samson C01 or the at2035? I know they are in a different price range but I would like to know if it is worth the investment. Thanks in advance and greetings.

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man thank you!! I think the C01 is more than enough for you, but I think it would depend on which 3 of these sounds the best to you. I personally really love the C01's sound best because of it's warmish character, but I also like the others and still use a Yeti for my TH-cam videos at the moment. I don't necessarily think you should spend more on the AT2035 to maybe get a slight increase in sound quality as I tend to think the Law of Diminishing Returns is very prevalent in microphones - perhaps even more so than Amps & DACS even. What do you think?

  • @Toneprince
    @Toneprince 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good video as have been still wondering which way to go, USB route direct or via Audio Interface plus the three mics you demoed are exactly the three I have narrowed it down to. So on hearing the three side by side I am definately leaning towards the Interface route as both the Samson C01 & AT2020 sounded quite a bit better than the Yeti which in comparison was thin sounding. So now its deciding which of those to go for. As I want to probably use it mainly for singing and playing acoustic guitar, which one would you recommend?

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! Thank you for the compliment. Yeah I kind of lean/prefer the C01 but it's close. Basically a toss up really. Do you play covers or originals?

    • @Toneprince
      @Toneprince 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HomeStudioBasics I mainly play covers at home, but also play in a Country band mainly for fun, which we have done some of our own songs, one is on TH-cam. That was recorded by a friend of the bass player who did it for free as he wanted to try out his new recording gear! So was also going to use the gear to try to record the band, as we normally rehearse once a week, which is obviously on hold at present due to the virus! Since looking at your review I have now thought of maybe upgrading to the Scarlet 2i2 3rd Gen, as its not too much more and would give me more options to record the band, would you agree!

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Toneprince Yeah man! Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen would be dope. I'm probably going to get a Scarlett Solo 3rd gen here soon!! Did you decide on c01 or at2020?

    • @Toneprince
      @Toneprince 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HomeStudioBasics In the end after reading various reviews, I actually bought the Scarlett 212 3rd Gen Bundle, as it was a no brainer for the price as included a good mic & lead and set of decent headphones, been really impressed with it so far. Didn't go with the free Focusrite DAW's though, as tried Able Lite and not that easy for a newbie like me using Computer for recording, use to Analog MD8' etc, so now just trying to get my head round Reaper which many recommended and appears much easier to use. I might buy the CO1 at a later stage so I could use the two mics to mic up the drums, one overhead and one in front, but already have a really good dynamic Samson vocal mic, which I bought at the Wembly Music Fair many years ago and sounds way better than my expensive AKG one, that could probably work well with the Focusrite mic.

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Toneprince Oh man I hated Ableton Live Lite but I used it wayyyy back in like '07 '08 because it came bundled with the Fast Track Pro. It wasn't user intuitive at all and from your comment it seems like nothing has changed. Scarlett 2i2 1st gen, Samson C01, JBL LSR305's were all some of the best investments I've ever made for my studio. Add LP60 turntable to that list too. Last year I had to sell off the 305's and 2i2. I needed money, but also the 2i2 1st gen is real finicky with newer laptops and Win 10 so I decided to just scrap completely and start over. It was in no way the fault of the interface though. That thing is marvelous lol. Mahhhvelous!
      I use Audacity for recording raps, a turntable, padKONTROL, and FL Studio for beats, and Reason from time to time. That's all I've ever needed man. Nice call on Reaper. Been thinking about investing gin that as sort of an upgrade to Audacity, but it all has way less to do with the software and more to do with how you use it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with using Audacity and there never has been.
      Yeah man, the law of diminishing returns really kicks in early with mics as well and goes back to that technique thing I was talking about. There are probably some differences, but not enough for most people to warrant those huge price increases.

Out of what I've owned and tried, I like the way the AT2020 portrays my raps the best, but in the future I may opt for something like an MXL990 or NT1 for an upgrade to 990. Just something flatter and more neutral I guess. I suppose what I'm saying is that those 2 are on my future radar. :)

    Do i have to use phantom power/soundcard for c10u? And whats the difference with and without phantom power/soundcard?

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man! Nah C01U stands for USB so you'd just plug that bad boy into your PC and go. With the C01 talked about/used in this video, it's XLR so it requires phantom power from something (Mixer, Interface, etc).
      Here I was using the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. You would just plug the XLR cable from the C01 into the front of the interface. I personally like XLR mics a bit better than USB. The sound is going to be better across the board: More body, more professional sounding, less need for EQ. In the majority of cases, I'd always go with an XLR mic vs. a USB one. You just generally get better results.
      For instance, the Yeti in this video sounds great but picks up a lot of background/ambient noise. Notice the C01 and AT2020 are both super quiet even despite me living near a highway. They require minimal EQ. If you're really anal about it like some are, you can apply EQ but they really don't need that much.
      I hope that helps! Let me know which mic you want to go with!

      Hey man! Hmm. I liked the AT2020 best for rapping, but I wouldn't say I'm an "aggressive rapper" per se. When I get a new mic, I may go with something like a 990 or NT1. Both of those are on my radar. I really enjoyed the C01 and 2020, but had to sell them in 2019 because I need some dough. So for you, maybe the AT2020, but if you want something more neutral and true, NT1 or 990.

      @HomeStudioBasics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@denisa_dubb The only real differences between the Solo and 2i2 are that the 2i2 has 2 inputs on the front, but they are also combo jacks. So you can plug an instrument cable (TS) or an XLR cable. Pretty nifty but aside from that if it's just you recording vocals and what not, the Solo will be fine.
      The other difference is that the Solo comes with RCA outputs on the back vs. the Balanced TRS for the 2i2. Does this make a difference in sound? It's hard to say. My guess would be not really. If there is, it's extremely subtle and you probably wouldn't even notice it. I wanted the balanced outs for my monitors.
      I had been using the 2i2 since 2014 before I had to sell it off for some cash. Out of the back, I used TRS to XLR into my studio monitors and it sounded great. If you were to use the Solo and wanted to get some monitors as well, you would use something like 2x RCA to XLR or 2x RCA to TRS.
      For straight recording, I used a simple XLR cable out of the front into my AT2020, C01, etc. Are you going to be recording vocals, instruments, both?
      If instruments as well, the 2i2 makes it easy with the combo inputs that I mentioned before. Let me know!!

    Ive used Superlux E205U-mic for about one and half year now mainly while gaming. Sometimes it tends to keep weird static noise that annoys the crap out of people and build quality is not very convincing but otherwise its ok.
    I decided to write about Fiio M9 here... I love it so far. My only grips are that the OS is sometimes little buggy/slow and i would like them to have volume knob instead of scroll. OS is super simple to use. Possibility to stream music is a huge plus and it supports SD-cards up to two terabytes. I cant say anything bad about the sound quality, they seem to drive all of my headphones- and IEMs without problems and i didnt hear any substantial difference when i compared them to AE-5, even R70X sounds just fine on high gain and i dont even have to completely max out the volume to get them more than loud enough. I can imagine that they could drive something like HD 600 or 650 even easier. Definitely worth checking out!

      Yeah hopefully FiiO will keep sending me stuff. They are going to send me the Q5 next and told me to keep the E10K for comparison so that's pretty cool. I would like to try the M9 at some point as well. It is a bit more spensive..

    • @L0nkero
      @L0nkero 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HomeStudioBasics Probably not, i dont need mic on a daily basis and when i do current one gets the job done.
      Ive heard that M9 and Q5 are similar sounding devices, Q5 probably packs more power because its dedicated dac/amp. Lets hope that they send you M9 some day!
      E: Q5 seems to hold up pretty well with Oppo HA2, M9 shares similar hardware so i think it might be quite a performer for a dap. This is from Headfonics:
      Performance
      The HA-2SE
      unbalanced has a slightly higher noise floor than the Q5 AM3a 3.5mm jack
      output, especially with sensitive IEMs. The HA-2SE noise floor to be
      fair is not that bad, much better than the older HA2 but side there is a
      noticeable difference on the Andromeda in favor of the Q5.
      Tonally
      the HE-2SE is also fairly linear sounding also but just a shade
      brighter and drier across the board than the Q5 with the AM3a. However,
      the brightness does not equate to the meme “saber glare”. It is still
      quite a smooth and likable treble response.
      Compared
      to the HA-2SE, you get a slightly more natural instrument timbre on the
      Q5 with a hint more lower midrange warmth and bass weight. However, the
      vocal presence on the Q5 lacks the same clarity and openness of the
      HA-2SE which is something I always liked about its DAC and amp
      implementation. I would say though the Q5 vocal sounds a bit smoother
      just not quite as lively as the HA-2SE. With that mildly brighter
      sounding upper mid and lower treble you also get a little more edge and
      snap on percussion on the HA-2SE.

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well that's interesting considering the difference in price. I really wish Oppo would change their minds about making products. Q5 should be here around Monday. I will do an A/B as well and let you know what I think. Had to raise a brow at him saying Q5 has more natural timbre. HA2 has some of the best I've heard. Looking forward to seeing if my opinions fall in line with his.

      @@period5304 Hah oh well? As long as it helps someone out that's all I really care about. Seems like you're kind of nitpicking but yeah I mean I have to cut out the unnecessary parts or it would be way too long. Pretty standard. Thanks for stopping by!

      @@period5304 Yeah I could probably work on my on camera speaking but this was about a year and a half ago. Check out some of my newer stuff and let me know what you think. I'm still kind of a bad public speaker but the cuts save me haha. If you saw my unedited clips you'd laugh your a** off. I'm a much better writer than I am a speaker. Hey thanks so much for the vote of confidence though!! I love the C01 so much!! What are you going to be recording?

    Hi. why i use samson C01 have noise with UM2 behringer device. but i use AT100 and BM800 with UM2 device no problem,no noise.
    just samson C01 have noise. try on off on off on off more time to make clear noise. with Samson. help me. or UM2 not match with samson model? or what?

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! It could be that you got a bad C01 and it just needs to be exchanged. You could also try uninstalling and re-installing the drivers (or updating them) on the UM2. At what volume do you start to hear noise? Also how far away from your PC is the unit? I've heard there can be problems with noise/interference when it's really close. Also the mic distance from the UM2 could result in problems. Try recording something farther away from the interface and see what happens. You could also try grounding it like this guy did: th-cam.com/video/SFR4SOohVns/w-d-xo.html

      @Home Studio Basics
      I SET
      VOL to low mid high
      Reinstall latest driver
      Grounding
      Change cable
      Change XLR male female
      setting Highpass filter
      Still have noise for samson c01.
      Noise Imaging like this...
      sssssssskrikkrikksssssskrikrikkssssssssssskrikssssskrikrikkriksssssss
      But i try ON OFF ON OFF ON OFF interface many time,its solve. no noise, but just in a minute,and go back to crazy noise😂

      If use with other mic brand UM2 no problem with this noise. i think my samson mic faulty, but change to audio mixer phantom power no noise problem . just share my experiance with Samson C01 + Behringer UM2😢

      I'd send it back, man. If you get another faulty unit, go with Focusrite for sure. A solo 3rd gen is what I plan on getting to replace my 2i2 1st gen that I sold last year. I personally do not like to rely on interfaces or DAC/Amps under $100. It's just not worth the eventual headache.

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that also makes sense. I forgot that you said your other mics were fine. Send the C01 back and see if the new one is better. It's a great mic.

    I am confused b/w to buy a Focusrite solo bundle (cm25 mic) or to buy separately with (at2020) or samson c01??

    • @HomeStudioBasics
      @HomeStudioBasics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was me, I'd buy them separate. Solo + C01. Can't go wrong with the Samson man. Still my favorite condenser mic.
