The Metabo HPT 36v Track saw might be a hidden gem in the woodworking world. This is likely the most underrated track saw on the market with only 9 written reviews that I could find at the time of this video. I put this saw through the paces to see if it's a good woodworking tool.

@@731Woodworks how about a review of the new Hercules dust extractor?
@@terriblet9810 already filmed and being edited now :)
@@731Woodworks awesome!
It cant use regen to stop the blade with the ac adapter because the battery isnt there to suck the load
Yeah i'm surprised more brands dont have this feature. Imagine having this option compatible with a full lineup of a brand that does shop + gardening tools. an example: I like having a battery powered chainsaw but when I want to cut a large amount of lumber delivered near my shop, id just pop in the AC adapter and keep using that one tool instead of having another saw which is corded or gas powered for bigger workload.
they dont want you having the same tool for decades
The reason whÿ the brake worx on battery and not on adapter is that the tool uses magnetic brake to turn rotational energy into electricity, charging the battery. With the adapter, there is nothing to charge, so to avoid overheating the brake, it just doesn't activate instead.
Nice review. The lack of a riving knife / anti-kickback technology will always be a deal breaker for me. Maybe OK for sheet goods, but definitely not worth the risk for solids.
I have had my Makita cordless saw without riving knife give me a kick back once or twice.
Admittedly I probably didn’t use it the way the manufacturer intended. But. The riving knife might have saved it jumping and gouging my track
I'd rather have just a corded track saw regardless. Don't work anywhere I need a battery.
Still, look at the WEN CT1274 7-1/4" corded track saw. Much higher quality than its little brother the 6-1/2" CT 1065. It is the ultimate value play in this category, solid & usable for $137. Been encouraging you to review it for a long time!
Picked up the Milwaukee track saw and Wen tracks (kit: 2x 55") and love it. One of my best tools. Good to know there is a less expensive, but on-par quality, option.
The ac adapter is definitely a cool feature. Dewalt does have one for its 120V applications. I dont think we're going to see this with other manufacturers any time soon, though. There's big money in batteries.
Flex does have the AC adapter as well but it's just for the table saw and miter saw. I wish Flex made a Track Saw. Looks like a awesome saw.
Probably just a matter of time before Flex introduces one. It’ll most likely be a great saw if they do.
I like my Milwaukee saw a lot but the depth indications on that Metabo, especially the blade change marks look more useful. Sometimes I forget what is the track line and the non-track line on the Milwaukee. Just like their manuals, Milwaukee isn't big on writing stuff out.
Metabo HPT (Hikoki, that is) is not any lower-end than Milfookee or Makita, by any means. Actually it's higher end than the red one because there are spare parts available for it if you need a repair. You cannot effectively repair a Milwaukee.
I just checked the price of parts, milwacky sells the stator as a kit(like always) with the speed controller and trigger switch for 175 bucks(not too bad) but if you break a switch you're changing a motor with it 😂
For comparison, Hikoki sells the just the stator for 117 and the switch for 4 bucks 😂
Looks like a good saw. Great review! Only thing I like green is the Hulk and money.
Flex has the battery plug in adapter thing for the miter saw
You need to test the Masterforce track saw.
Cant find that one over here. But i can find its twin from Hikoki. Also looks more like hikoki then metabo to me.
AH.. Metabo is from Hikoki.
I think they are the same tools
Great video Matt! Weird that Lowes don’t carry this on their website. I like that it has a corded option. Options are always a plus. I know that there is options to buy to convert other batteries to a specific brand on Etsy. Kinda like a -adapter option.
I think they are currently sold out of them.
Lowe's is weird. Lowe's is just now getting the 36V "The Stud" circular saw in-store despite it being out for a few months. They take a while to start carrying new products.
The two Lowe's stores in my area have an anemic Metabo-HPT selection. It's frustrating. I wish they had less of some other brands and more Metabo-HPT. I suppose they have their reasons.
@@JimDoubleYa Yeah. I just bought their 12 inch sliding compound saw. Has a vertical handle like the festool. It’s different but works great! Almost bought the Bosch Gladiator.
@@EDVERSiTY Flex seems to be their go to now. They are back and fourth.
It would be awesome if you could do a review about the Evolution R185CCSX 15-Amp 7-1/4-in Corded Plunge/Track Circular Saw or the new cordless one.
That AC adapter is cool. I’ve often wondered why more brands don’t make those. Each brand I have tools for would probably make instant sales from me. Dewalt used to have an adapter for their original flexvolt miter saw, but it only worked on that tool as far as I know, because it took two batteries to run that saw. Milwaukee and Ryobi just put the ability to use a cord and certain tools. I have an m18 rocket light that can be run from a battery or a cord, and I have a few Ryobi tools and work lights that can be run on either. I would much prefer the adapter though, that way I could use it with any tool.
I'm stunned to see any Metabo HPT tool on this channel, but there's a correction that needs to be made.
The adapter ONLY works on 36V tools.
The batteries are 18/36 Flexvolt, and will work on both 18 and 36V tools. The adapter is 36V only, and will not work with the 18V tools.
Hiiiiitachi
3/5 and 7/10ths are hilarious. It is accurate and a middle finger to the stupid Imperial system. Good work Metabo.
That corded adapter feature is great! I've thought about doing a similar thing for my M12/M18 Milwaukee tools.
I bought the 7.25in Wen track daw and track. Crazy cheap and decent products. I figured I won't use it a ton, but I just needed it for breaking down material and cutting rough ends from furniture tops. I didn't exactly need anything super fancy.
Track saw Sunday! Looks like a nice product. I love the battery adapter thing. Very cool!
Thanks for this, Matt. I have been a bit worried about the disappearance of corded track saws, so the adapter kit is awesome. I've already put it on my Amazon list.
This is also interesting timing. I had been considering the Bosch SCMS, and when I put my hands on it at Lowes, moving the safety and pulling the trigger was tough since I don't have particularly large hands. Right next to it was the Metabo SCMS, and it actually looks fantastic. I've decided I may go with that. And it's on the order of $200 cheaper!
Excellent review, thanks for checking it out. i may have to pull the trigger on it, I love my Metabo HPT stuff. It's surprising they don't get more love, because they make some good stuff.
Without a doubt the Metabo. I love the AC adapter, like you said it is bulky but very useful often time, I mostly use it with my miter saw. Nice review.
Nice review. I did notice that the plywood off-cut had LOTS of splintering, though.
I can't believe it has taken this long for a manufacturer to come up with that power adapter! It's been an obvious move to me for a long long time. For me this is hands down essential in the shop. Hopefully all manufacturers will board this train straight away 🙏 ( c'mon Milwaukee!!)
“Im not into MM, as a trooper we carried .45s. Cuz they dont make a .46” 😂😂😂
As an ironworker who tried woodworking as a hobby after a fall, I’ll swear by Metabo. I know the woodworking tools aren’t the same but on the metal side they are some of the best. Unfortunately priced accordingly though
finally, thanks Matt. love mine, although mine is Hikoki brand. in regards to the battery it is multi volt which means it works on 18v AND 36v tools. o my brand that does this. means you don’t need to buy into 1 platform. you can buy and interchange your tools and the batteries work on both 😊
idk about the american HPT line, but the normal metabo saw here in germany is pretty loved by everyone that i know who tried it. that one does look pretty similar. the most common comparrison for it is the Festool track saw. it basically holds up with everything from that saw, for like 150-200 bucks cheaper.
Aaaaand, they also recently started selling a corded version of it that you can find under the name "KT 66 BL"
as for the riving knife, idk about the HPT one, but the normal metabo one has an electric kickback control ( here is a german dude showing that working th-cam.com/video/HcRUOClPZ8M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3QVca91bg9Sg4NYA&t=632 ) You can try if it has it, by just having the blade run and then ripping the saw up (obviously while not plunged into anything)
Tha battery adapter was introduced with their 12" compound sliding miter saw, then was packaged separately soon after.
I think you missed mentioning/comparing the anti tip feature (for angled cuts) of the Makita.
Probably the only time you would benefit from having a riving knife is when ripping solid wood. I was ripping solid wood one day to get a straight edge with a circular saw that didn't of course have a riving knife. A few boards pinched the blade from tension in the wood and made it difficult to finish cutting. After that experience I wanted a track saw with a riving knife. I haven't had the pinching issue using the track saw I bought with a riving knife. That's why I didn't buy the cordless Festool even though I like the safety feature. I believe the circular saw did kick back when the solid wood pinched the blade. I don't believe I've had any kickback with my track saw with the riving knife so far.
I already have the Festool. I still can't make the deprh gauge work for me
Cord option = Genius. I'm assuming you can use that corded adapter on any cordless Metabo tool. That would be double genius
OK well 500 bones is a LOT of money, which I, myself would have to be cutting a lot of sheet material to justify that kinda money. And I won't ever. But a great presentation Matt and a great video. Thank you
I was looking at the Milwaukee, mainly based on your review, but the price point and the battery adapter will probably change my mind.
I’m really impressed with all the metabo woodworking tools I’ve used I’d really like to get one of these eventually. Praying for yall
Since I use a different battery brand for all my tools, The Battery plug in is Paramount to my decision. I would defiantly go with the Metabo. I am not spending more money for a one off tool brand battery replacement.
I definitely like the power cord option. I’ve never before thought about getting a metabo because I don’t want to have 3 different battery systems and I already have DEWALT and Kobalt systems so the ability to use the adapter and not have to worry about buying three more batteries just for the one tool is a game changer
For me, the Kreg track saw with the table combo are unbeatable. It’s by far my most used tool in the shop!
Battery adapter is way cool. BUT, Metabo has less tool selection that my beloved red tools. So If I was starting over, I would still go red.
I have the Metabo HPT job site table saw- which has Ebrake, soft start, rack and pinion fence and can handle a dado blade.
Great video Matt looks like a great track saw definitely would have looked into it if I didn’t have the Ridgid track saw after watching your review and getting your tool deals which I love getting. Thanks for sharing
Le gasp, le shock, a corded and cordless feature in the same tool... Metabo me impressed!
Great review, the adapter is a game changer, others probably won’t sell one because they are scared it will affect their battery sales. I think the only thing I didn’t like about Metabo was the use of a laser for their miter saw and not a shadow line. Bang for your buck this track saw is hard to ignore.
Good review, you should try the bosch track saw next.
The reasons more companies don't is because Dewalt tried and failed and it burnt out a lot of the miter saw idk about long time for the metabo because I think you can use the adapter on all 36v tools I'd worry about it damaging the smaller power use tools over time but have this feature for saws large drills vacuum etc
Like the battery/AC adapter. It would be nice to have that for all of my M-12 and M-18 tools. JimE
Matt, go for do a complete build using metric.
I think the power cord adapter all manufactured should adopt that.
Meh-tuh-bow did good with that AC power adapter option. Nice! 👊
If it's underrated and under reviewed saw, I can almost bet 99% of people aren't aware of it.
metabo looks like good tools I'm curious of their table saw.
The Flexvolt has the most power from what I’ve used
My old Dewalt saw has one of those adapter batteries I bought years ago ; -)
I love hitachi/metabo tools. Can’t beat them for the price.
I wish you could review the metabo job site table saw!!!
battery and corded same tool....metabo is looking better and better to me...finally someone gets it
You need to test the blue Bosch GKT55 track saw
I have flex tools and the flex miter saw and table saw have an adapter and hope it goes on the track saw too
Metabo is the most slept on, underrated brand in my opinion.
Yes, join the superior Metric system.
Pls test more metabo tools an i had onother idea pick up one of the older festool tracksaw and compare it withe the newer one
Love the vids
The cord adapter is big more companies need to do this
Please review the Bosch one too please.
Absolutely no the cord. Sold me.
Great review, thanks!
Metabo for the win.
I'm happy with the Kreg!
Not 18 volts, 36 volts
Have you tried the Mafell? The track joining method is fantastic. But the tracks are sorely missing the up-facing t-slot.
i haven't tried them yet.
It's not 18 volt it's 36 volt ..and the corded adaptor only works with there 36 volt tools ..that was the only thing you got wrong ... but I have owned mine for 4 months now and well it's far better than the Milwaukee in my opinion and was a nice upgrade from my old makita 9006 and the bets part is it us IP rated it may nit say it on the box but it is and well hest warranty on the market ...to date I have not been dissap9inted in any of my metabo tools .. and it us good tgey are keeping the Hitachi quality
What makes you say it's better than the Milwaukee? I'm not objecting at all, I'd just like you to elaborate on that if you would.
Well that would explain why it doesn’t break as it should.
I have hard time finding review on Metabo Installation Drill!: -Help!🙏
Have you ever reviewed the Metabo HPT 12-in 15-Amp Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Corded Miter Saw?
i haven't tried that one yet
3/5 and 7/10, eh? Even we 🇨🇦 folks don't use numbers like that! 😂
Haha!! Those are infrequently used Freedom Units. We don’t normally use them either. 😂😂
18v or 36v?
Right now, I'm making do with a Dewalt cordless saw combined with the Milescraft saw guide kit. BUT, if I was in the market for a good track saw, I would get the Metabo. Looks like a great value.
I had a really bad time with the milescraft guide and returned it, would not work with my skil saw
I would get the Milwaukee track saw because of the pack out box…. I don’t like the boxes that the other ones come with…. But that’s me and my opinion….
it's a valid reason. The Packout box is the best storage of any track saw that I've used.
Awesome review! The only Metabo tool I have is the sliding miter saw, I think it is great! Just like the track saw, it doesn’t get much love on TH-cam. I think it is worth checking out. I think it’s the cheapest price for a sliding miter saw that you can place almost to the wall.
Thanks 👍
Matt, how would you compare plate to blade adjustment capabilities of this Metabo to the Festool?
They are similar I think. I still like the Festool better though.
When will we get a ridgid subcompact random orbital sander
coming soon. Got it in last week.
awesome
Do you know about the flatmaster drum sander?
never heard of that one
I think that dewalt made a miter saw that could run either on batteries or an outlet. not sure though.
Yes they did. It was the 120v version I believe.
What do you do with all of the tools you review on this channel i have to imagine storing them all is not an option unless you have a large shed
I give most of them away throughout the year
For me, this saw looks like a perfect addition to my arsenal, however, there's just one thing missing, a power cord.
I love that Tudor watch you have on too!
Thanks!
Will it fit the grizzly track saw
not sure
Man.. I was all excited (and mad) to see this amazing feature.. after having just spent 1200 on my Festool KEB PLUS. Thankfully it's not a big deal since I stay corded. :D. But that is pretty slick and honestly why cant others do that? It's just an AC to DC inverter in the batter unit.. no reason others can't make that same feature for all of their battery options. Hell I am baffled why this hasn't been around for decades with battery operated tools. More so.. if it offers MORE power, then why not have that + battery so you get the best of both worlds with all tools. Need more power to drill or migsaw or route.. plug in the AC/DC battery option.. and get more power to your otherwise battery operated tool. I would be curious if other YT like yourself start showing this off if the likes of Festool, Ryobi (esp Ryobi since they seem to have more tools and creative ones at that than anyone) won't offer something similar.
It hasn't been out for decades by any means, but Metabo has had that adapter out since 2017 or so. So yes, it is very surprising no one else has started doing it.
I will say Ryobi makes a cordless drain auger that can be plugged in, also a few of their cordless fans can be plugged in.
It's actually not an inverter (that worx the other way around) but a switching power supply. And to be able to deliver the high current the tool needs, you need a very powerful power supply, making it expensive.
Another US metric measurement heretic. When will you ever learn that, for example, half of 1000mm is a LOT easier to determine, than half of 3 feet 3 and ¾ inches? To explain that further to you US metric heretics-that is one calculation, instead of three calculations. All you have to do to understand metric measurements, is to purchase a metric measurement tape measure and then you will be measuring in metric measurements.
We don't care for doing things in 16ths.
It's that simple.
Hard pass on the metric. Its not "muh more accurate" either
So, if I've got a 3/4 piece of material (19 mm) and I need to mark the center of that...where do I find 9.5 mm on a metric measuring tape? Or if I need to mark it into equal thirds, is it easy to 6.33333333333 mm on a metric measuring tape? I can find 3/8 and 1/4 on my heretical tape pretty easily. Just saying.
Having the AC Adapter is a B I G deal!
That would push me over to purchase the Metabo.
Why would anybody not be “into” millimetres? Why would imperial be better in any sort of way? I mean if you wanna continue to measure stuff in frogs legs and toothpicks then go right ahead but it’s hardly a flex.
Americans use the imperial measuring system, i worked in America it’s all feet and inches I prefer inches to the metric system, it’s just what your used to.
Because it is like doing everything in 16ths!
We don't use metric for anything jib related here except cabinet hole dpacing and a few other things.
Its not easier, its not more accurate and thr switch isn't going to happen. Now go cut a 6,750,976 mm board. Or a ten footer😮😅
That corded battery is brilliant! But, I'll still fo for the Festool when I go to buy a track saw.
I’ve been saying for years that corded adapters should be an option for battery tools
Makita is the better one
No one over here use metabo that is for amatuer
The Metabo HPT looks like a nice saw. I already own a Milwaukee and Festool, so I’m out on this one.
