We all know Jesus was crucified. While I have no desire to be provocative in explaining the details of the crucifixion of Jesus, I do think it is important for us to understand the physical suffering of Jesus as it shows us how much we are loved and what he went through for us. Can we think of anyone who was treated more harshly than Jesus Christ? Consider the physical abuse Jesus suffered on our behalf. When arrested, he was bound by the soldiers. Those who have been handcuffed testify that it is very painful to have one’s hands tied behind the back for a prolonged period. Jesus spent the entire night standing trial before an improperly convened Jewish court. Then, “the guards took him and beat him.” (Mark 14:65)In the morning Jesus was tried before Roman authorities for the purpose of gaining a death sentence. During this series of trials, Jesus was again mocked and taunted as an impostor. The soldiers “twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.” (Mark 15:17) His brow was punctured deeply by the long-thorned briar. The soldiers repeatedly struck Jesus on the head with a staff and they arrogantly spit on him. (Mark 15:19) Early historians assert that scourging was a most dreaded punishment. Bits of lead and stone made the whip a brutal, slashing instrument of terror, ripping a man’s back and legs to shreds, occasionally even tearing out an eye or slicing open an ear. Jesus was led like a sheep to the slaughter. Our sensibilities can’t imagine the horror of one’s hands and feet being nailed to a cross and one’s body being suspended naked above the gawkers and gloaters below. Every breath was a struggle for Jesus. Every movement produced jarring pain. But Jesus suffered the cruel and inhumane torture of crucifixion for six agonizing hours for us. Peter wrote that Jesus “bore our sins in his body on the tree.” (1 Peter 2:24) How can we express appreciation to the Son of God who suffered so much for us? How does the reality of Jesus’s physical suffering affect the way we view our own personal suffering? Can we think of anyone who was treated more harshly than Jesus Christ? Consider the physical abuse Jesus suffered on our behalf. Where Love and Justice Meet Micah 6:8 He has showed us, what is good. And what does the LORD require of us? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love our neighbor as ourselves. At the same time, God is love (1 John 4:8). How then does the Bible define justice and love? What does it mean that justice and love both characterize God? What do justice and love mean for us? Where do they meet in our world? In other words, in order to understand justice, we need to understand God's love. In order to understand His love, we need to understand His justice. Emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, by looking like other men, and by sharing in human nature. He humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death--even death on a cross! As a result God exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow--in heaven and on earth and under the earth- Philip 2:7-9
