Not "just" a cook in a Grand Victorian households the Cook was one of the most important members of staff along with the Butler and Housekeeper. That's why Cooks were always referred to as Mrs even though the majority were unmarried they were given the status of a married woman.
I tried to cook this one (with modifications on the materials and equipment i used), though i only cooked 1/3 of the entire recipe; plus i prepared homemade breadcrumbs since i have a few stale loaves bread on hand. I cooked them on moulds that are good for single serving, covered them with foil, and steamed on a bamboo steamer. And it actually turned out amazing. The texture is like a cross between bread pudding and cake; of course chocolatey, and the sweetness is just right. It is indeed delicious while it was still hot, and as well when it cooled to room temperature. One tip though, the chocolate to be added does play a role in the overall flavor; indeed use a good quality one. I tried using compound chocolate (chocolates containing vegetable oil) to compare, it was still good but the depth of the chocolate flavor won't be the same like those chocolates containing cocoa solids (i suggest at least 60-70%).

I guess it goes to show just how words for things have changed. What was known as pudding then (or rather "Baked Pudding") is now commonly considered more of a brownie, while what we consider general pudding today is more akin to custard, or "Cream Pudding".

TheWitchvortex Me too!
I have used the recipe and adapted it for my own domestic use (recycling bread I botched) and it made a very pleasant treat. Thanks for those awesome ideas !
I have got to stop watching videos from England--so far I want a housemaid, a chauffeur and now a cook!
All you need is a Hazel !
LOLOL!!! I literally laughed out loud after I read your comment -loved it!!!
Lol
Its been a while Ms Cromcobe great to have you have back.
I love these videos. Have no idea how to cook nor any interest in the food, but it's just so cool. Respect to the actress for being really good at what she does.

I love these recipes! I get so tired of making the same thing over and over that these recipes are a wonderful change. I also like learning how they did the cooking then without all the modern conveniences we have now.
Her accent, her voice. Ugh, I swear! Very soothing and calm that would make a person who's suffering from anxiety attack calm down.
So I tried this. I have this habit of using my oven to store pots and pans when I don't use them. When I put the pudding in the oven, I accidentally left a rolling pin in there. I was out a rolling pin but the pudding tasted wood smoked and amazing. Now I am trying to figure a way to get the taste without burning a rolling pin
Ay mi buena señora Crocombe, lo que usted nos muestra es simplemente celestial... I would love to make this very recipe for Christmas, hopefully, it'll be as good as yours.
i think im done with ASMR videos now. Glad to find this. Soothing and relaxing.
I was getting these videos in my recommendations list for years and I never thought of watching them until yesterday. I’m absolutely hooked now!
this channel has helped me a lot with the study of English, here in Brazil we don’t have a decent way of listening to native speakers, and this has helped a lot
I miss you Mrs Crocombe!
I love it! Please make some more cooking videos!
+Lis Olga What would you like to see Mrs Crocombe make next?
English Heritage
An alternative Halloween dish for this season would be sweet, but really anything would be great. Thank you!
Some game dishes would be nice, too. Hunting season has started already, if I'm correct.
I'd really love to see Mrs Crocombe put together a Victorian afternoon tea, with various sandwiches, cakes, and of course, tea. Excellent videos!
Sooo nice you're back!!!❤😁
Idk something about these videos as they start with its calming background music just lifts my mood so quickly. I found this channel by accident and that’s one of the best things happened to me on TH-cam . Thanks for the amazing content ♥️
으앙 자막 달아주신 분 정말 감사합니당
언젠가 기회가 된다면 만들어보고 싶어요웅
이분 목소리도 좋고 행동도 차분해서 넘넘 좋아요
She said “buy the best chocolate” Your chocolate is the best one i’ve ever met🤩
I binge watched a LOT of Mrs. Crocombe's cooking videos and I dreamt of being one of her kitchen maids and had a British accent. Best dreams ever.
this one of the most positive comment sections I've ever read, i love it.
I’ve actually made this recipe before - multiple times now! It’s so delicious! It’s very dense and rich, but oh LORD it is such chocolatey goodness! I make it regularly now, it’s so good!
Es un maravilloso programa ,un viaje en el tiempo con excelente estilo inigualable.Lo disfruto muy mucho.Gracias, abrazos desde Argentina🇦🇷!
Wow it looks like fudgy brownie
+Incognito Pi? That’s a very good comparison. Mrs Crocombe’s chocolate pudding is similar in taste and texture to a brownie. Thanks for watching!
I guess it goes to show just how words for things have changed. What was known as pudding then (or rather "Baked Pudding") is now commonly considered more of a brownie, while what we consider general pudding today is more akin to custard, or "Cream Pudding".
i agree 😋
Would they dig a little hole in the center for cream?
yes or they would top it with a dallop of whip cream
Did this and it works, my new thanksgiving desert
That's great news! We're very happy that you tried the recipe.
English Heritage 😎😎
I love watching these, the recipes are always interesting and her voice is so soothing.
I just love this calming, fairy music in the video!
This taste amazing! I just made it for my dad's birthday & the whole fam loved it. Even my mom approves lol. Thanks a lot Mrs. Crocombe!
YAY FINALLY ANOTHER VICTORIAN WAY VIDEO! THESE VIDEOS ARE WHAT I SUBSCRIBED FOR! ❤❤❤❤😗😘
This is the only reason I subscribed to the channel. I LOVE the Victorian cooking videos. The only ones I watch from this channel.
Jenn Hedrick Same. 😘😘😋😋
I’ve just been binging these it all just makes me so happy
I may give this a try this weekend! That looks great!!
I follow this recipe to make my own chocolate pudding this morning. Change two places: reduction of 2/3, use electronic steamer for 40 mins. It tastes good ,and easy to make. Thanks for your video.
Wow, hard to believe that this pudding was steamed. Makes me want to make it at home. I really admire on how they cooked it back in the old days. Makes you appreciate all the time and effort poured into the the dish.
Looking forward for more cooking videos like this one.
Thank you I love your videos I always look forward to them ..💖you are a natural thank you..💖
I just made this and it tastes delicious. Thanks for the recipe 😗
Thanks for sharing! We're glad you enjoyed it.
I've been watching a channel called Townsends and they make historical dishes in the 18th century, usually American. It's so cool to see historical American and English dishes and how similar they are many times. Keep up the great work! I'm curious though, did England use much of pumpkins or other squashes at all or through history? I know pumpkins are an American crop but I wonder if they made it over to Europe before modern times. Thanks again for you shows! Very awesome!
I'm a fan of Townsend's too - good to see simple recipes made with basic ingredients that would totally work in a modern kitchen.
I love that channel!
A shame. He's had some pretty good ones recently. Some were cooking hare, throwing tomahawks, and making root soup. Get back asap!
Kimberly Cook my friend's last name is Townsend...
Kimberly Cook Why, I do believe Mrs Crocombe recently sent a thoughtful food parcel to Mr Townsend. It contained some excellent tea, a seed cake and a plum cake.
I love that everytime the video ends she looks so proud of what she made 🙂
These videos bring me peace for some reason
This videos are soothing and satisfying to watch.
I just found this video in my recomended list and for some reason just by watching it it's giving me chills I subscribed btw😁😃

Christopher C no need to be so rude. And this wasn’t overused a year ago.
The servants in this house are really, really lucky compared to other servants. I like that you make such nice dishes for them.
Why does she always make me feel like a kid caught with his fingers in the cookie jar, or should I say biscuit tin ..........
