This is one of my favorite episodes from Season One, because it is so true to the predatory nature of high school bullies, the way they seek out weakness and pounce on it.
I can’t even lie, I love how 90s this episode is, to be fair the whole first season really leans into the time, but the slo-mo walk, the needle drops, chefs kiss
I know a lot of fans don't like this one, but it's always been a S1 fave of mine. Again, the writers are pretty heavy-handed with the monster as metaphor here, but it worked for me.
Hey. I liked Mr Flutie. Can we take a minute to consider how much therapy those other pack members are gonna need? They will remember eating their principle but not understand that they were possessed.
RIP Flutie!!! This episode is a great metaphor for high school bullying. The look Willow gives Xander during dodgeball was odd to me. In this game of dodgeball, Willow and Xander are on opposite teams. Xander may be acting odd, but none of it justifies anything outside of Giles' "Scully" behavior." Up until the pig is eaten Giles is technically right to say what he did to Buffy about Xander's behavior of being a "teenage boy." Buffy and Willow needed more proof than Xander was going through what Riley from _Inside Out 2_ does aka pueberty. Interesting that Giles doesn't say that exact word. He just says "becoming a teenage boy." That makes me wonder if The WB had issue with it in the same way they were worried about how close to Buffy Giles should stand. Giles later (once he believes) said they pray on the weak, so the dodgeball game played out within the bounds of the mythology, and yet it still fits within the bounds of bullying. The metaphore of this episode is a lot more perfect than it can sometimes seem.
The 'girl on the right is' - Jennifer Sky. She played Cleopatra in the show Cleopatra 2525 a couple years after this. Other than guest stars, like the first episode of Fastlane, I don't know where else you would have seen her.
@@chanceshouseofhorror6053 That makes sense. I never watched Xena, and Cleopatra 2525 was made by the same people that made Xena and Hercules. So they must have reused some actors.
I believe the girl you thought looked familiar is Jennifer Sky and was in a fair number of different TV series though mostly 1 episode appearances. She was the main character Cleopatra in the TV series Cleopatra 2525 with Gina Torres and Victoria Pratt.
I love hyenas! They're highly matriarchal, which is something I wish they kept for this episode. Unless that tells us something about Xander who ends up being the leader I guess.... 🤔 (Also, congrats on guessing Principal Flutie was going to get eaten! Not a vampire, but this was better, right?)
Flutie went out way too early. An interesting episode mirroring gang culture and pressure that comes with it. One of the best episodes of S1 but stick with it, this show just matures into an incredible show in later series. We see Xander as a really nasty person once under the influence of the pack, turning on Willow with very hurtful remarks, once again showing how this can happen with peer pressure to maybe impress others. A pretty decent episode for S1. Good reaction I think the show has grabbed you both now. On small technical criticism of the title is Hyenas are usually referred to collectively as a Clan, not a Pack. Anyway great X-Files reference in this episode when Buffy says to Giles 'stop trying to Scully me'.
Nice reaction to a fun oddball episode. Many Buffy fans place this strange story High on their list of least favorites episodes but for us that saw this when it aired, we really liked the story. At this time the stories about bullying in high school were making the rounds. For us, the story about how groups would bully there way into what they wanted was a daily occurrence. Maybe not as violent, no mascot or principal feeding, but we could relate. Also having the mascot being a cute pig had relevance. The movie Babe was only a little over a year old and every girl loved the movie.
Not the Blood and Honey "Piglet No!" I almost pissed myself laughing. To be honest this wasn't an episode that I've ever held in that high a regard. In my opinion it really felt like a filler episode to try and see if something works.
Actually Eoin Bailey the main guy in the pack , Lance was 21 here and younger than Nicholas as Xander who was 25 and you called him a 30 yr old . This is what I notice, many if not all reactors comment that these people look too old which I never see myself, I’m always confounded at the “they look like 30” remarks. It’s a bit much 😂
Yeah the hyena spirit magnified Xander's feelings with an evil/cruel twist. He does take Willow for granted and is obsessed with Buffy even though she doesn't like him that way, that is real.
React to the film: DEVIL (2010), a simple horror film that takes place in just one location, but manages to be tense and claustrophobic at the same time. It's worth checking out.
The leader is Eion Bailey. He's in one of the best horror show right now "From" (he was on Band of Brothers and Once Upon A Time). I really don't understand the Xander hate at this level even here when he's under influence. Maybe because I know the full show and what others characters did/said. He's not always a great guy specially in the 2 first seasons but I saw worst character. I liked Mr Flutie. He gone far too soon. He was nice to Buffy.
It's so interesting how much personality and life experience affects people's reactions to different characters. For me, watching the whole show does not improve my opinion of Xander - I have done so multiple times, and I like him less and less after each watch through!
Why are the 7th, 8th , and 9th episodes for members only? Is it like an early access reward thing and egular Subbies just have to wait longer for them? I was about to get into a binge session with you because I have never watched the show, but I'm not going to bother if I can only watch some of the episodes obviously. 🤪
@@chanceshouseofhorror6053 OK, awesome! I'm excited to watch along with you and start this series! I'm also on episode 7 of Tales from the Crypt! lol 😁👍🏻☠
@@chanceshouseofhorror6053 I wish I could afford to be a member, but unfortunately I'm South African and the ZAR currency is incredibly weak compared to the US dollar, not to mention that extra fees are charged for my account if I want to become a member (discrimination against my country, haha!), so it's just not financially an option for me. I am however, a subscriber and I really love your reactions! BTVS is my fav TV show of all time. All other supernatural and superhero TV shows which came afterwards were standing on the giant shoulders of BTVS. 😊

When the show first aired I only caught a few episode before this one. This episode hooked me into the show forever more.
I've seen a lot of reactions to this episode, but this was by far the most enthusiastic response to Principal Flutie getting eaten. *Two thumbs up*
Lol! I'm glad someone shared my excitement.
I love how Xander is the Alpha of the pack, meaning he's stronger than he thinks as a person.

Having met Principal Snyder, I too like Mr. Flutie now lol
yesss i love this episode its my most rewatch from season 1
Damn, what you got against Principal Flutie
Lol he's not team Buffy! No but really I miss him now.
RIP Flutie!!!

bullying is predatory behavior which doesn't fit in with what's masqueraded as 'civilized' society
And Herbert. RIP Herbert.

Fun reaction to hyaena people. I feel sorry for poor Herbert, he never should a chance.

Jennifer Sky (Cleopatra 2525, Xena) is in this episode. It's a little known fact.

I actually saw that in theaters! Really good movie.
SPOILER FOR SAID MOVIE
Is that the one with the single location being the elevator?

The one is dumb but I love it.
My least favorite episode of the entire series.
