I sadly never owned a PSP back in the day, but I’ll forever take pride in the fact I own a UMD Video copy of Godzilla: Final Wars
The soundtrack to that film is a certified hood classic. RIP and big ups to Keith Emerson.

Something about watching Perfect Blue on the PSP makes me want a PSP so I can watch one of the best psychological thrillers of all time when I’m at the airport.
This is an excellent video! This actually reinforces a personal epiphany I've been having recently.
I swear that there's something just inherently intimate and carefree with dedicated handheld entertainment devices with actual buttons instead of the caution-demanding touchscreen on our phones.
The same applies to UMDs, I mean loading up your PSP with a physical disc back and forth really sells your intent as a consumer with what you want there and then entertainment wise. (Really who can forget that *click* and *clack* sounds of ejecting and inserting UMDs?)
I understand people are giving Sony flack for the upcoming PlayStation Portal, but with it being a modern handheld entertainment-specific device without it's overreliance on a touchscreen, it's simple conveniences like that that feels inherently personal as an avid video-gamer. I mean cons are there for sure for the Portal, but if the desire to press buttons on a screen inches from one's face is there, I can't help the want to revisit that intimacy.
I already pre-ordered the PSP (PlayStation Portal). Don't underestimate simple luxuries, everyone. Simple things can be that powerful.

I had a couple of UMD movies but only really watched Robots, Guess Who and Bewitched on there, which is probably the weirdest trio of films to have watched on the system.
It’s cool to see someone else talk about UMD movies. I’ve been collecting them pretty hard these last couple of years. I have The Departed shipping from Japan as we speak.

I borrowed my cousins for a month and was so hooked I had to get my own. My parents ended up getting me the renegade squadron version, and this was great growing up with siblings having to share a television
I used to have a few films for the psp that i used to watch when i went to work with my dad, I used to sit and watch Austin powers goldmember on repeat ❤

PSP is a console I bought around age 26 in 2016. It's still a great console. The entire Aeon Flux on UMD? Godzilla 2000? It's so cool.
Broke a friend's UMD of Dude Where's My Car because he told me to try it out but didn't tell me you shouldn't open them

I loved UMD movies and miss them! I have a little collection. Makes sense why no one really wanted them.
Movies on the PSP was WILD back in the day. I had a CRT TV that I used for my original Xbox and Xbox 360, and didn't upgrade to a modern day flatscreen till around 2009. So the PSP's widescreen format and high resolution at the time blew my mind because things just looked so much better on it than it did on anything else I was playing on at the time.
UMD Movies are a nice little novelty. I think I used to watch National Treasure 2: Book of Seceets on the format, I think it was also bundled in the Hanna Montana PSP bundle, which did include a episode of the original show. I think. My memory of that format is fuzzy.
I own a PSP and do use the UMD discs on occasion, but if I wanted to watch movies or TV shows, a simple file conversion wpuld do the trick really. Which is actually pretty interesting, because currently I have all of the episodes of Jackass on it. I did this as some sort of test to see if the PSP can handle Taimanin Asagi.

If only Sony had a site or means to download digital copies of the UmD movies. It can be cheaper and convenient than manufacturing physical copies.
UMD is the most adorable media format of all time. I had lots of movies for my PSP 😊
i had a psp on release day , i was 14 y/o and was sailing the high sea's of the internet and man i watched many movies on my psp, good times, felt like a baller going to school with a movie library in you pocket :D
I remember when myself and my 3 other brothers all had PSP’s back in 08/09. My oldest found a way to jailbreak it and then we all had jailbroken handheld systems it was a great time so many memories!
I only had a few umd movies but they were special. I didn't have a portable DVD player so this felt like a cooler alternative.
Having had some of these back in the day the quality actually was really good, at home i was still using VHS for the most part so to have near DVD quality (probably better if you account for composite cables being ass) was great
I have a found memory of Adam Sandlers "clip" on the psp, as it taught me english as a kid lol

Damn my dad got hella of the vid UMDs for us back then. The Green Day concert was the first one, good times.
When I got my 1st PSP for Christmas 2005, I got 2 Fast 2 Furious on UMD, but on the XMB the preview video was the Supra/Charger drag race from the first film 🤔
I also got NFS Most Wanted 5-1-0, which to this day feels like the hardest game I've ever beaten, probably because it wasn't that good 😅

When I was young I never had a psp. I like that.
The only UMD Movie I own for the PSP is my #2 Fav. Movie, which is the 2007 Sony Pictures Animation Movie: Surf's Up
My PSP came with The Lords of Dogtown…. 11 year old me had no idea wth was going on in that movie 😂

Used to watch the family guy Star Wars UMD on the bus and played Dante’s inferno good times
UMD movies didn’t make a lot of sense with the first fat model of the PSP, but with the slim models that support component out, including the one shown in this video, you really did have DVD quality movies that could play on the TV or the go on a really solid gaming device.
My fat model psp plays umd movies just fine.. watched dodgeball the other day on it
@@MrSkullMerchant the UMD drive on my 3000 model is kinda busted, but I remember buying a few movies for less than $5 at GameStop in the early 2010’s, connecting it to my TV with component cables, and just watched them, the difference in quality compared to DVD was non existent to me, really loved that feature
I only bought one UMD movie, House of Flying Daggers. Plus my PSP came withy Spider-Man 2.

I had a family guy season 3 umd when I was a kid! My parents bought it from Best Buy.
It’s funny because today these things are like collectables now. I recently bought a lot of 132 UMD films for like 100 bucks. Do I need all the films no I’ll keep the ones I want and probably resell myself the ones I don’t.

The Thing is, Sony doesn't really care about their handheld consoles. They only care about their Home consoles
PSP UMD's got me through a number of boring work days back in the day. I'd bring the PSP to the office and have movies playing while I worked. Films coming out with digital downloads killed the UMD because you could just download the film directly to the memory card after that. Then streaming killed that and the PSP because smart phones became more useful.

I'm not gonna lie the umb movies Fascinated me. Like imagine if you worked on a space station and you were there for five years flying through space with no internet connection so all you had is your p s p And all the movies you can get on it.

Still have the PSP I bought on release date in December2004... So many good movies watched on that... The best UMD movie for me was a porn title called "Miss Captain" which had maybe the best acting of any porn ever... They were just portraying high school girl athletes but they were so believable!

Wild there was a time when they were selling us movies and shows on our portable game systems. Compared to the PSP us GBA owners got the short end of the stick, yet that didn't stop me from owning several carts anyway.
Oh yeah, instead of buying a game with dozens of hours of content, let's just buy a disc with a movie that will become obsolete 2 hours after i watch it.

I got the Star Wars edition of the PSP it was storm trooper white with Vader’s helmet printed on the battery door and u got a copy of a Star Wars game I loved it but I found movies harder to watch on it due to them being hard to hear on the system vs The games probably due to not having the sound optimized for the device my favorite version of grand theft auto is on the device it wasn’t a bad device just not utilized well by PlayStation cause once digital movies got more popular there could have been a store set up to buy and download movies and tv shows directly to the device similar to the iTunes store

I dont think my region had these at all. i was pampered with the first gen psp and 2 different slim versions as a kid and never knew about these umd video and music disks. and now that i google it i know that they were called the PSP-1000, the PSP-2000, and the PSP-3000

Really was! Remember watching Kill Bill Vol. 1&2 in bed on UMD when I was a kid, thinking this shit is going be the future of video lol. Now that I got 2 PSP's, I wanna start collecting UMD movies lol.
Especially if you compare it to the alternatives at the time like VideoNow or GBA Video
