She was still in pitch except for when she did attempt those high notes.
Viewers should know the background to this "performance". Carey was supposed to rehearse a few days before. She kept the entire crew waiting in icy rain for two hours and never showed up and didn't even call to make them NOT have to wait. They were furious! The producers WANTED her to lip-synch but she refused saying this is HER song and she can sing it in her sleep, so she went live. The engineers decided to teach her a "lesson" in civility and humility, so they isolated her amateurish vocals and secretly released them to the media. When she was shown the video, she complained that the crew should have understood that she was going through a divorce (Nick Cannon) and they should known her emotions were "fragile" at the time. She also used that excuse for her failed vocals. It's a perfect example of how good musicians & back-up singers can save your ass, and how you should appreciate them by treating them with respect and consideration, NOT as "paid hacks" for a diva
