One of those Buzz Bombs hit a London hospital ward on the night of 17/18th June. The 25 year old nurse in charge of the ward that night was my father’s sister. She was killed, along with 11 patients, 1 nurse survived but was blinded. Ten years later when the hospital was rebuilt, a ward was named after my aunt, because of her policy of never leaving her patients when an air raid was imminent. RIP Nurse Bridget Quinn and her 11 patients.
I am 6 minutes into this and already I can tell this is a National Treasure. Thank you for posting this precious clip, and God Bless the souls of all who sacrificed their lives during this time for the sake of freedom. Whether willfully or unwillingly we owe them so much.
I've seen this many times, and many others, I always love to hear the first hand narration though, that's what makes it so great is to hear the background story
My father trained troops at Fr. Benning before going to Europe. He was in the first wave on Omaha Beach and every time I watch films such as this one, I look to see if my dad was in any of them. Sadly, I have not seen him yet. He fought all the way to Germany and at one time was wounded and another occasion was awarded the Bronze Star for saving three wounded soldiers. He was fighting in Korea when I was born and later in the 60's he served in Vietnam. Thank you, JD for showing this film. I greatly appreciate your doing these historical videos.
Let me say something, I spent 9 years in combat including 3 different wars . I was wounded in 2014 & became disabled as a result . My service & time pales in comparison to that of what your Father a real hero endured . To accomplish what he did in the time period you described is nothing short of remarkable and heroic .
You are just as much a hero for serving your country proudly. I salute all veterans. Both my brothers served in Vietnam and Cambodia. Our oldest son as been in nearly 23 years and served twice in Iraq. My wife's father served in the Pacific in WWII. This is a world-class glimpse of history presented in the most immersive way possible……exactly as it looked as it happened. Thank you sincerely for this invaluable offering.
The automatic camera at 11:45 minutes is not British but Canadian infantry at Juno Beach, the North Shore Regiment from New Brunswick at NAN-RED beach sector map location at St. Aubin-Sur-Mer. . At11:59 a soldier quickly turns around to partially face the camera and then continues ashore. He was one of the very few to survive the war (forgot his name). The Queens Own Rifle Regiment (QOR) (Dad's "outift" as they called it), landed just to the west of this landing at map coordinates NAN-WHITE in front of Bernieres-Sur_Mer. They landed 15 minutes before the "swimming tanks" with their canvas covers arrived, and they landed 100 yards west of their intended landing location, due to the tides. This put them right in front of a concrete machine gun nest. The result over the first 15 minutes was the highest PERCENTAGE of casualties of all the Allied landings. 85% killed or wounded in the QOR first wave. Dad's outfit was told while in England that "Gentlemen we will have the privilege of being part of the first Canadian soldiers to land on French soil. Do your best. The sooner you understand you will be the first men of the Canadian army to land on French soil, do not expect to survive the day. kill as many of the enemy as you can. the sooner you understand to land on French soil and die there, and accept this fact, the better soldier you will be. Rommel fears us as Canadian soldiers. He calls us Storm Troopers because of our effectiveness and fercocity in WW1. It will be time to prove him right, again." Any Canadian soldier who survived the war, said they survived because of luck, and only luck. NOTE: USA Omaha beach had a much higher total casualty NUMBER, but the smaller Canadian contingents had a higher PERCENTAGE of killed and wounded. The 2nd wave of Canadians landed shortly after the tanks and took the town and continued on into Normandy.
My Grandfather landed with the North Shore Regiment, New Brunswick, Canada with the first wave on D Day, June 6 1044. He fought all the way through to Germany in May1945. He said it was the worst day of his life. He saw a lot but never, ever spoke of it or would speak of it. FYI... the solider you mention who turned to face the camera was George Herman Baker from Nova Scotia.

Makes you more understand what these brave men and women went through. What it does to a country and its citizens. How horrible war is for everyone. This is Fantastic ! I have never seen this before , my Dad was in the Battle of the Bulge , but came late in the war ,so there is no chance of him being in any of these movies . But in the color film I can imagine how he would have looked in that time and place .It brings him back to me . Thanks so much for posting this wonderful film . Another gem from History Underground.

This is great. I wrote my thesis for undergrad over correspondents contributions to the war effort. It’s incredible seeing first hand a lot of the people and places I’ve read their pieces over. These men and women are an underrated part of World War II that I’m glad to see you share!

Sad times right now, especially considering everything that was sacrificed already; this should be shown in jr High/High school to persuade those to avoid war. You have to actually see the sacrifice to understand that we should avoid war at all costs, and here it is for us all to see. Thanks for everything

Jack Thompson, the bearded correspondent seen @5:11, jumped with the 82nd Airborne. In fact they had a hard time keeping him from making the jumps. I believe he finished the war with more jumps than the regular paratroopers!!
I’ve seen this elsewhere on TH-cam and it is a pretty extraordinary record. It humanize the soldiers and shows the effects of war on the civilian population.

I have seen many documentaries, you tube videos, watched numerous movies on WW2 . This 44 minute video taught me a lot , learned things as well. The press can tell a lot in less time. D Day though Eisenhower knew it would be a blood bath wanted no news or videos on that day. Can't imagine WW2 fought today with same weapons , etc and outcome, with the Internet and cell phones. One hell of an informative video; A photo is worth 1,000 words a video leaves you speechless.
This came at a good time in your collection JD. It was nice seeing the places as they were at the time and you had taken us there earlier. Thought to myself, "Oh, we've been here before." Thanks for sharing this treasure and hopefully there are descendants who will see this.
My father was in the RAF during the war, and between postings he and many others in the same situation, were given 600 Jeeps to run-in before D-Day. In times where there was virtually no petrol for civilian cars, they all used this freedom to drive all over the UK to visit friends and relations, before returning a jeep to get a new one to run-in the engine of! Apparently in the weeks leading up to D-Day, so many new military vehicles needed to be run-in that pretty much any serviceman who could drive was put to work in this way!
Nice Find JD! I remember watching an interview about Jack during the 50th year anniversary either on ABC or CBS back in 1994. His narration makes it an interesting take on what's going on over other stock footage.
Thank you for this! My dad was a radarman on a DE, the O'Neill, laying down cover fire on D Day. While I have his journal describing those days, this brought it even more into focus.

The chilling comment @ the 44:53 mark of "perhaps we better remember what World War II was like, and World War III will be much worse". Praying it never happens but seems to be creeping at our doorstep. Wonderful footage and so enlightening to watch.
wow this is amazing this man was in several places and situations my grandfather was in/at so its very nice to be able to see some of these places in wartime . My grandfather is probably in that Colom of troops marching down paris and was in Normandy, st lo, Houffalize and Bastogne.

That's quite a story. My father was part of the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.
What a brave woman she was, and our services had many such heroes as your aunt. What a brave generation!

This came at a good time in your collection JD. It was nice seeing the places as they were at the time and you had taken us there earlier. Thought to myself, "Oh, we've been here before." Thanks for sharing this treasure and hopefully there are descendants who will see this.
My father was in the RAF during the war, and between postings he and many others in the same situation, were given 600 Jeeps to run-in before D-Day. In times where there was virtually no petrol for civilian cars, they all used this freedom to drive all over the UK to visit friends and relations, before returning a jeep to get a new one to run-in the engine of! Apparently in the weeks leading up to D-Day, so many new military vehicles needed to be run-in that pretty much any serviceman who could drive was put to work in this way!

Nice Find JD! I remember watching an interview about Jack during the 50th year anniversary either on ABC or CBS back in 1994. His narration makes it an interesting take on what's going on over other stock footage.
Thank you for this! My dad was a radarman on a DE, the O'Neill, laying down cover fire on D Day. While I have his journal describing those days, this brought it even more into focus.

The chilling comment @ the 44:53 mark of "perhaps we better remember what World War II was like, and World War III will be much worse". Praying it never happens but seems to be creeping at our doorstep.

wow this is amazing this man was in several places and situations my grandfather was in/at so its very nice to be able to see some of these places in wartime . My grandfather is probably in that Colom of troops marching down paris and was in Normandy, st lo, Houffalize and Bastogne.
