  • In this video I show some earlier clips of how this tree has been coming along since I first bought it for $25 about 5 or 6 years ago. Lots of structural work on some reverse taper and lots of big branch cuts. Then about a month ago it decided to drop all its leaves and sprout new ones. Not sure why. So I dive into that as well. Enjoy!

    Got me my coffee ☕️ now I sit😅 I’ve had one defoliate on me one year when I brought it inside for winter, it shed the leaves because the lighting conditions weren’t like being outside. I thought I killed it but nope it grew new leaves. So my best guess is a shock to the plant maybe. Wow yah I’d say those were pretty drastic cuts😮 I seen on a different bonsai channel a long time ago when you put that cut paste on the Cambrium grows rite underneath it. Put the stuff they were using was more putty like not as runny. im going to go out on a limb here and say you had some kind of rot going on, for all that organic matter to be in there. I love that flare at the bottom. Well that was another great video I enjoyed Mike, have a great weekend thanks for sharing.

      Thanks Eric! Yeah I think I mistook that running stuff for the good paste stuff. My Japanese ain't so good I guess lol. And yeah the more I think of it, I think some root rot was the issue. My solution is always to give them water, which probably made the issue worse.

    I like it, nice work. I'd be tempted to use very fine sandpaper on the cut paste areas to see if it comes off.

      Thanks Dave! I'm sort of curious to see how long it takes to wear off on its own. But if it takes TOO long, I might just try that.

    Nice job Mike.
    I just think trees are not ment to grow inside: they allways seem to suffer a lot during winter.

    Could it have been the cut paste. It started right after you applied it to the trunk, and all the leaves above the paste are the only ones affected, not the sacrificial branches. Possibly an allergy of some kind😊

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's possible. Although it was actually last year that I applied that cut paste and the leaves only started falling about a month ago.

    Think there is potential on your tree and am sure yours will bounce back fine. My ficus macrocarpa (not ginseng but not sure what variety) does have it drama moments now and then. I would guess it is because not grown outside but rather a indoor bonsai and out in summer months only. Think they are somewhat stressed living like this and they don't have enough heat and humidity to thrive. Still love them lol.

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I agree, I think they can be random drama queens sometimes lol. What threw me off this time is that it was fin when I brought it inside in October, and even put on new growth. Then in January it just randomly lost the leaves and grew new ones. In the end, all is well though.

      Mine did the same thing- usually when I bring it in from outside- will look good, then the leaves yellow, and fall off- but new growth comes in within weeks and it looks vigorous again. I just let it do its thing.@@BonsaiBoise

    Hmm, could be some root rot, I'm sure it'll take off once it regains some vigor in the new soil. I water with a very light solution of peroxide (a squirt of peroxide in the watering can) once or twice a month, mainly to help with fungus gnats, but it's also helpful for preventing diseases in the soil.

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting! It doesn't harm the tree at all? Do you rinse out the roots afterwards or anything?

  • @zicada7661
    @zicada7661 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    There's so little bark left for sap to flow to the upper part now. Aren't you worried about removing this much horizontal real estate?

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, I was actually. I did that part last year though so apparently it did ok. I wanted to do more but stopped for that reason.

    I think you applied the wound sealant too thick. That stuff doesn't need to be applied like the putty variety.

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good to know! I'll try putting just a little bit on a different one and see how that does. Thanks!

    Wy do you repot it so often? It clearly doesn't need it. I know not touching the tree is the hardest part of bonsai but the tree will do much better

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not touching it isn't hard for me as I have a couple hundred trees to get to. But this one did need it. The soil was bad and had mold growing on it. A handful of my trees were effected by this. So far they've all taken off on huge growth spurts since repotting.
