Hi Teacher. I am watching your video because I do love British accent but I am working from Mexico for an American company, so I must get more confident in American English. However, I hope one day I can be more familiar with British English.
Just go with what you like better. You will end up having your own accent anyway until you’ve lived in one of the places for quite a number of years. The differences in vocabulary are mostly negligible, just be aware of which version you’re using and be consistent in your choice. BTW, why not listen to the singer Katie Melua. She speaks with a British accent but when she sings, she has a U.S. southern accent. (She was raised in Georgia, USSR). Listen, for example, to Nine Million Bicycles and Walls of the World; listen also to one of her interviews so you can hear the way she normally speaks. Why does she do this? I think it is because the long vowels of southern U.S. English carry her emotions better. The way you speak changes how you feel and how you sound to others. So do like Katie and use whatever feels right to you at the time.

I should stop here because Sabe , my sweetie, is gonna be jealous! 😂 As you can guess, I'm not a beginner but I like English so much that I watch a lot of English courses because there is always something new to learn or review and I especially like the British accent and schwa !!! Listening to Sabe or yourself is like sugar to my ears. As for me, I know the IPA without ever having learnt it!...Might sound curious but here is why: In fact my first English teacher (3 first years) was like a 'master' of it and he would often write it with some particular words. He never required us to learn it but, by dint of seeing it bound to the words and sounds, I ended up having made like an unconscious connection eventually learning it and knowing it without I never realised ... Now, I would really recommend the learners who wish...to learn it, say, consciously; I think that is very useful if, for example, you run across a word making you hesitate regarding the exact pronunciation and if you can have access to its phonetics and especially of course if you don't dispose of an audio! The great advantage these days is that in any online dictionary, now, you have the available audio allowing you to listen to the word. I would although advise everybody to learn it nevertheless; It can always come in handy for all learners of foreign languages! I absolutely loved the lesson; You gave some great tricks and tips that each one can personalise (which I recommend to do) for still helping the memorisation better. You also reminded that the principle of spaced repetitions with cards (excellent) for example is one of the best ways to learn and memorise in the long term! 👍 In a nutshell, excellent lesson Anna, as always !!! 👍👌👏 Bisous! /bizu/ 🥰🌹❤ P.S.: Personally perhaps (But maybe for a next lesson or short ;-), I woul have evoked the important symbol ' which precises the place of the accent/accentuation to know which syllable (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc...) must be accentuated in the word (if there's one). Thank you for your comment. I too learnt the IPA mostly unconsciously, but to truly become confident with it I had to make more effort. You make a good point about including the stress symbol. I was torn when creating this lesson and workbook about how much to introduce. In the end, I decided to simply teach the letters of the IPA, but I will revisit this topic a few more times and you can rest assured that the stress and syllable symbols will appear. :D

Thanks so much for your kind reply :-) Exactly Anna 'stress' is the term I should have used indeed :-) Ye, that would be great and I totally understand; I imagine all the work involved in each of your videos and you're doing so amazingly! And probably if I spoke about it, that is because writing more and more poetry in English, I realised something relatively recently: Especially regarding the importance of the rhythm in English Poetry, so tricky for us to 'feel' and apprehend as non-natives! In a nutshell, the reason is that English is a stressed language (a stress-timed language! more specifically if I speak of literature/poetry) where 'stress' is often more important than the count of syllables and can even somehow modidfy/affect the number of them. Where: French (non stressed language !) is totally and absolutely a syllable-timed language !! This means that in English, the number of stressed syllables in a line is generally more important than the total number of syllables. That is what confuses me a lot and getting it and getting the hang of it appears to me quite tricky (like another world you know..) as I tend to 'reason' as in French when I write, being probably too much focused and clung to the syllable count ... I should probably read and listen to more of the great E. poets and study it (which I didn't). Sometimes ipa is helpful but sometimes I think it confuses us more… 🤷🏻♂️ It’s interesting that ipa uses two Hellenic letters for the sound. θ and ð In our language those are letters and they make these sounds δέλτα - ðelta (the letter Δδ) θάλασσα - θalassa (sea)
Always try to approach it with a positive outlook. If it starts to get you down and feel overwhelming then take a step back. As you say the IPA can be really helpful, but not if it is stressing you out. The methods I explain in the video and the resources I have provided will help you. :)
