“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

British empire met its sunset, since war monger Churchill dug a tomb for the Nation step by step:Boer war,Gallipoli disaster ww1,Norway fiasco , Attack on Mers El-Kebir (thousand French sailor deaths 1940), Bengal famine (30 million souls perished) etc.He promoted a war,but didn't have muscle to show in Poland & Dunkirk theaters. He dragged the world (Canada,Australia,New Zealand,South Africa,India, and USA) into flames in order to preserve the Empire; and fostered monster Soviet communism to poison the entire world . Britain is the one deserved most blames for sacrificing millions of lives during and after WW2.

Portillo is wrong. The Bristol statue should not have been torn down. The man, who was a great philanthropist, was a product of his time, when these things were viewed in a completely different way. You could probably find reasons, if you look hard enough, to denigrate many, or even most, great historical figures, and remove their statues or other memorials. It is sheer stupidity to judge these people by the softer standards of today. It seems like they are expected to have been perfect, which is ludicrous.

What is happening in the UK is eerily reminiscent of post war Hungary: everything, ideas, art, literature, history past and present was subjugated to a marxist soviet totalitarian ideological lens. It destroyed or at best vitiated original, creative thought, intellectual risk taking and all that was rich and complex was subordinated to the narrow, oppressive, pontificating will of the "state." Just visit Statue Park in Budapest to see the triumph of the banal, the mediocre and totalitarianism.

The difference between celebrations the toppling of a statue of a living, ruling tyrant; and celebrating the toppling of a statue of someone like Colston is this:
The tyrant had oppressed the people that did the toppling.
    Colston had been long dead.
Not to mention the reason their statues were up in the first place. The tyrant puts up a statue of himself to remind the people of their place. The city chose to put up a statue of Colston because of the contributions he made to the city. The fact that he engaged in slavery is irrelevant. Everyone engaged in slavery at the time.

4:29 Please DON'T compare Thomas Colsten to Saddem Hussein. Half or more of the people who want to tear down British statues don't originate from the UK or Europe! They others are insane. We can’t observe, analyze, improve or evolve if we constantly throw away the proof. This trend results in a dumbing down of society: A new trend of “cosmetic surgery” of what happened. Change the ugly truth to something attractive. The acceptance of this takes away freedom of thought.

I would prefer that they remain in place and there be information alongside, explaining the history and context, honestly, why they are considered hero and why they are also considered a villain, and the context of the world at the time, domestically and internationally.
If controversial figures are placed in museums, they will not reach the majority of the public and I think it should be in the public realm.
If there are statues that are very deeply controversial, then perhaps a museum might be appropriate.
I do not agree with tolerating just anyone or a group unilaterally deciding to destroy anything.

7:57 - We could, in theory, give him "the ability to answer back" artificially, using RAG technology, by feeding all of his writings into a vector store and chatting via an LLM. Although it's incapable of communicating directly as himself, it's as close as AI can get us to how he might reply to any questions. There's quite a few caveats though; accuracy depends on the amount and quality of his writings, as well as his honesty regarding his own beliefs. And the questions asked must be fully understandable to him, using words, phrases, situations and circumstances common in his time rather than in our time.

British people are not "still obsessed by" the second world war. Those who know and understand a bit about history (a dimishing few of the younger generation bombarded by "woke" imbecility in schools and universities) are rightfully proud of my parents' and grandparents' generations in standing up to the murderous force of Nazi evil, Britain and the Commonwealth and Empire entirely alone for more than two years before America came in. My father was a front line soldier, one of the many who fought from the deadly beaches of Normandy in 1944 all the way to Hamburg in 1945. A British generation of great courage and integrity. Justified pride is not an "obsession", Mr Portillo.
