  • Amish horses are smart workers, but after 22 years of retirement, will our horse, Katie Bell remember how to get the job done?

Good Morning! I am a city girl. Born and raised in a big city; lived my entire life in a big city. Do you think I would find it interesting to watch you plow a field using an old piece of farm equipment and an old horse? Well, guess what? I sure DID!! I was glued to the video!! Katie Bell knew what she needed to do and she did it! She didn't forget. Now as for you, Sir -- you are a great
teacher! You explained everything in detail along the way, you had your children involved in the work in different ways, AND you showed you cared and were concerned about the welfare of Katie Bell -- your work-partner -- by letting her have some much-needed rest stops along the way so often during the job. I bet she got an extra good rub-down after that work, too! Thanks for sharing!! Have a good one!

Brother you almost brought me to tears watching you and your son plowing the field. I brought back memories of my late Father and I plowing the fields as a child some fifty years ago in Southern Mississippi. I was to short to reach the top of the plowing, so I would hold on to the cross brace while walking in front of my Father. Until I was strong enough to hold the plowing in place while following behind the borrowed mule named Kate. Thanks for the memories of my childhood.

That was great Brother! We use to work horses so much and I agree with you that a day will come when we will be doing it again. Use to have enough harness for 14 horses. We used bigger draft horses though. The smallest collars we used, I believe was 24 inch, right up to 30 inch. Watching your videos makes me feel melancholy. I kinda miss those days working with the horses.
Best wishes my Friend and thanks for the video.

Man somehow I missed this video and it came up in the algorithm. Nevertheless, this video brings back fond memories. My grandfather had long stopped farming with horses by the time I came along, but he kept all his horse drawn implements. My sister and I would garden /play farmer with them. We’d hook them up to the lawn tractor. She’d drive and I’d walk behind the plow, cultivator or spring tooth harrow. He had a riding disc harrow, but wouldn’t let us play with that. He was afraid she’d fall off the tractor and I’d run over her with the disc.😂😂😂. Once I learned how to drive and use the Farmalls, I succumbed to “red power” and never looked back. The old implements got hung up in the machine shed never to be used again. I did inherit his horse drawn dump rake that I proudly display on the property near my flag pole. Would have loved to been around when he was still farming with horses, just to have learned how to work them.
Also it amazes me everytime I go back and see one of these older videos just to see how much the boys have grown. Time is truly matching on and waits for no man.

ya know I thought y'all might be loosely anabaptist affiliated but never would have thought you had tried your hand at being Amish. You mentioned the symptoms of an overworked horse in the video and got me thinking and remembering. I don't know what Amish folks do for an over worked horse aside from resting it but
When I was a kid my grandpa taught me how to do the basics hilling corn and taters with a moldboard and an old lead broke pony he had. We wouldn't over work her but he has always told me that when he was growing up if a horse got overworked they'd feed it cross vine when they put them away at night and the next day they'd be ready to go again. I know that for myself if I get overworked and get shaky crampy muscles I always need some electrolytes. Salt and potassium and sugar, plus some good carbohydrate and protein and 10 hours of sleep. I've thought about trying to find some cross vine for ME! 😂

@@McGieHomesteadAdventures I guess it is native a little further south because when folks quit cultivating it the stuff pretty much disappeared up here in West Virginia. I've never seen one growing wild. Has orange flowers and is supposed to have a cross inside the stem if you cut a piece.
It would be interesting to know how well it works but probably not too fun for the horse victim of such an experiment 🤣

My dad used to plow with mules my granddad had about 300 acres he farmed in the 1930's cotton and corn I never knew or don't remember how many mules he owned but up until the early 1970's we still had most of the harnesses still hanging in the old barn each harness had a pin that it hung on. With the name of each mule
Painted on the wall above. My dad was always jealous of the mules cause they got roughly 1 &1/2 hours for rest 11:30 till 1:00 pm but, he and the other hands got 30 minutes for lunch becaused they had to grab a hoe after harnessing and un harnessing the the mules for break there was a cotton or corn patch near the barn lot and it had to be hoed out.
Plus he hated those calm day with the mules always farting they expell alot of gas when working he said it stank badly. The extension service agent told me that when it was dry to plow. Cultivate because the loose soil would act as a type of mulch allowing the deeper soil to retain moisture where it was covered by the loose soil Uhmmn?

where would someone even learn to do that now-a-days. that's incredible. I have an old to-20 i work my fields with but id love to learn to use actual horse power for a backup. kudos for keeping the tradition alive.
spot on about the gas crises and emergencies also. A lot of people don't realize that we've only had electricity for less than 200 years. At some point or another some country is going to try and weaponize it or take advantage of it, we're seeing that now with all the hacks going on.
