Great video for supporting people who are confident picking funds. However, the tricky part from my perspective is deciding upon the percentage of equities and bonds, and ensuring this remains appropriate in the run up to (and into) retirement. I'm not convinced that the majority of people with a pension would feel confident about making this decision and then having to rebalance their portfolio each year. This situation then almost forces people into taking financial advice - which is expensive (sometimes scandalously so).
For people who do not have the confidence or inclination to pick funds and continually rebalance, the simplest (yet still effective) path seems to be for people to pay into something which automatically de-risks and rebalances - like a lifestyle pension or target retirement fund. Set and forget. Sure, someone could attempt to learn more about investing and become more intentional about their investments, but how many people - as a percentage of the working population - are realistically going to do that? I'd rather people were served by a lifestyle pension which gave them a chance of a dignified retirement.
In short, information about how to pick funds etc. is useful, but it only really helps those who have the gift to understand the information and the confidence to take action.

Does the s&p500 pay your interest/divedends yearly in one lump sum?
Does this work also if you are investing in an etf that tracks the s&p500. The reason I ask is because Trading 212 only has etf and not index funds?
What happens if the s&p500 is negative for a couple of years. Do you just make £0 interest or does it hurt you previous interest gained?

I think people make a mistake by getting obsessed with fees and filtering just for low charge funds. At the end of the day, if you go for an active manager charging 1,5% a year, but their historical returns are 6% a year over 5 years, versus say 4% for a low fee fund, then the extra costs are worth it ( remember, the returns are always net of fees). By all means go down the cheap fee route first, but I would always re-open my low cost choices back to compare to all funds in that sector by net performance alone, looking at 3,5 and even 10 year returns. Any single Fund can perform over 1 year, but those that beat the index and their peers consistently over 3 & 5 years, after fees, should always be considered, irrespective of their annual fees.

Surely this just involves picking the best performing funds in the rear view mirror and not something that should be recommended? Like last week’s lottery numbers? These funds got bigger (and therefore less nimble) because of the past and if the factors change that drive them up change they will struggle? With rates and inflation higher surely what worked in the past can’t and won’t work moving forward?

"surely what worked in the past can’t and won’t work moving forward" . . there is no reason why a well managed, good performing fund in the past shouldn't continue being a good performing fund into, at least, the near future. If you discount everything that has been successful up to now what do you invest in?

Depends on the factors driving performance. For example how could you reasonably expect a high growth fund to deliver in a value environment or vice versa. Passive funds have one style (mega cap momentum) so what happens if we move into a more balanced, mid small environment etc, etc. All funds have style biases and factors

Hmmm, OK for some, but I don't like the changing allocation. it's like lifestyling on pension funds; I'd rather be in control of that myself...

You only need three index funds, the Three-Fund Portfolio. #Boglehead
    Total US Stock Market
    Total Ex-US Stock Market
and a low total market Bond Fund.

@@MeaningfulMoney what about lack of diversification across fund providers? I use Vanguard, HSBC, SPDR, iShares, Lyxor and L&G ETFs in my SIPP. Overkill - maybe?

I consolidated my work pension to standard life now I’m wondering if I should have went with Scottish widows or another platform. Don’t know how much I love standard…which platform is your fav, Pete?

@@myfyrmadocjones I'd think that would just increase your fees: Vanguard, for example, cap account fees at £350/year. Your money is already protected by virtue of being held separately so not really gaining anything by spreading your investments across providers.

No sponsorship by Pickafund. If there was I'd have said it. Why assume the worst - that's a crap way to go through life. Plus, I'd be shut down by TH-cam fairly sharpish...
