I adore that you actually went along with their stims!! That would make me feel so much better in therapy if they acknowledged my stims rather than pretending I'm not doing it...
Hi Ryan, I've been watching your videos for quite some time now. When I was choosing on a career path in my last year of high school your content helped inspired me make the decision to pursue music therapy as a professional. It has been a very challenging four years. In a couple months I will graduate and begin my internship to become certified. These last few semesters have taken a lot out of me emotionally and I was unsure whether I wanted to practice afterwards. I looked you up again today to get some ideas for an assignment and was brought to tears by this video. Thank you for sharing your practice and reminding me what I am in this for.
DONE SUBSCRIBING MY daughter has autism too. It is really hard and challenging raising a child with autism. But God choose us to be their parents to love accept and protect them always
I am majoring in psychology and an intern in a clinic for children with autism, and also a musician. i'm now having the chance to learn and apply music therapy. I loved the last song and how conversational it was!
Wow. I have been writing little songs like this with at risk kids, doing similar activities. I get them to cowrite too. I had no idea I was doing music therapy. I wish I had seen this before I majored in elementary ed. Great job man. You're really good with these kids.
I was tired of all the bad news and needed to watch something nice and found this.I have 2 adult sons with autism and Its been a long road and I am tired. I have faith i. God’s sovereignty and will take one day at a time.thanks for this inspiring video and God bless you!
so wow, You my friend are amazing, I'm 17 and thinking about going into something around your field of work, and not only did this motivate me even more so it made me smile, you're such a understanding and patient person, I really love what you do.
Hi Ryan. Thank you for this video. My daughter is a freshman at Florida State University, majoring in Music Therapy. I'm going to forward this to her for inspiration. She's already done some observations, and is being drawn to people with dementia. She loves working with them, and seeing their faces light up when a song from their childhood is played. It's like they're transported back in time. Amazing.
Hello Ryan....God bless you. You are my inspiration. I m a mother of a nonverbal autistic son. He is fond of music. I hired a professional musician for him and started classes based on your techniques. And now gathering more kids n adults to work on them. Keep sending more and more videos. It will be great motivation n a proper guidance for us. Love you stay blessed
Thank you so much for this video! I am going to be a college freshman majoring in music therapy this fall, and I would like to work with autistic people in the future. This video introduced me to the cooperation, respect, and patience that goes into being a music therapist.
Im going to do the same thing with a 9y old boy i met récently that i wanna help, he cant even say a word. .. I hope my music will help him Wish me luck, am so excited 🌠🌼
This is so beautiful! I want to study music therapy and am watching these videos to learn more, and its really inspirational what you are doing - and also really intellectually fascinating to see how the brain makes connections in order to help with motor skills.
Amazingly I am a leve 4 training counsellor and I have to do research assignment relating to Autism and music.I ended up here wow amazing what you Ryan.
Stumbled upon this video, and I think you really have a gift. I'm a music teacher and learned a number of things from watching just this video! Thank you for what you do!
All of the subtitles really helped along with the amazing video! I'm currently doing an extended project that consists of looking into music therapy and this has helped so much! Doing this project and seeing videos like this always remind me of why I want to go into the career of teaching in Special schools :) Thank you!
Yes, there is always hope and it's so special to celebrate each step forward even though it may look small to an outsider. Thank you for your comment! 🙏
I am so grateful to have found this video! Ryan you are the perfect instrument. Thank you so much for this video. My son who is nine is autistic. We both enjoyed this video!
You are incredible Ryan. My 4 year old son is on the spectrum and has always loved music. Watching your videos is wonderful. You’re such an amazing person for what you do
Amazing! All these video's are amazing. I love how you adapt to all of your clients needs. It is great to watch. If someone wanted to get into some sort of art therapy focussing on learning differences would you recommend studying psychology or psychosocial studies? I have a background in art (film) Montessori education, did a course about Autism and a years study in psychology. Would love to work in this field. Thanks
Hi there, this is fantastic! I really enjoyed this, great work! I work with a 4 year old boy with autism and do music therapy sessions with him. Would it be possible to get the guitar chords you use in these songs at all? thanks, keep up the great work! :)
I'm basing my dissertation on Music Therapy and how it can affect young autistic people's behaviour and communication skills and your work is just so inspiring! :)
...That ain't hard, dude. Not everyone with ASD has trouble speaking, y'know. Some do, some don't. It's not "amazing" that he can speak in full sentences- many, many people with ASD are actually very intelligent, just not all of them express themselves, and that's okay- so don't act like it's some magical feat that he can talk.
Hi Ryan! So I've been watching your videos for a while and this is great stuff you're doing. I am 15 years old and from your videos have given me an intrest in music therapy. I was wondering if you could tell me what it takes and/or what kind of person you should be. I love music and helping people is great but I'm not sure if I'd have the patience for this. Thanks!
Hes on a different speed than you are on, why dont you catch up to him? does anyone else see this here? Great job! How do I try and help people like this?
I'm matching my 1 and 3 downbeats to his head moving forward. There is some variation in his temp, but for the most part, I'm on it! For more ideas on how to help people with special needs through music, please sign up for my newsletter and free video series at www.therhythmtree.com/landing-page?tmpl=component
Meditation music and yoga don't "cure" autism. In fact, the only thing that seems to lessens the behaviors to the point where a child might not meet the diagnostic criteria, is a bio-medical approach, but even that is quite controversial with mixed results that rarely led to a huge reduction in behaviors.
Has a client ever tried to grab the guitar from you or thrown an instrument? I ask because I play guitar and synthesizers and have been using some techniques like yours with my 5 year old son who is autistic but he frequently wants to grab the guitar or bash the synthesizer keys (not angrily, he loves it but gets too excited I guess?). I actually got him a cheap kids guitar and even gave him one of my old synths but he always wants to “take over” with whatever instrument I’m playing or hit them out of excitement. So I kind of gave up for the time being (music gear is expensive 😬). I try to explain to him “If you don’t use nice hands with the instruments, we can’t play.” but he just doesn’t seem to understand what I’m saying. Thank you!
Hey Molly, I have that happen on a weekly basis! Good call on getting the cheap guitar. If he wants to take over an instrument, cool! Just grab a different one yourself or do some body percussion or singing to accompany him. Follow his lead! You can also use sturdy percussive instruments like shape drums or floor drums. I hope that helps!
Get a set of drums. As long as the sticks stay parallel to the drum head, he CAN'T damage it. Trust me, I'm a drum major. I bet it's because he's a drummer, lol. They make kid's sticks from Vic Firth, but he might not need them. I had a boy 14 months use mine just fine. Just sit behind them and prevent them from hitting anything that shouldn't be hit. Like themselves. Don't buy garbage, but a Tama RockStar or Ludwig kit or even a Pac-D should be easy to find and cheap.
Hi, Ryan! I love watching your videos and the way you work. I'm also really interested on working in this area and I have a couple questions, if you don't mind, I'd like you to answer them for me. What area are you majored in? I wanna know what directions brought you to this position you are now. I find it very hard to know what steps should I follow. I was thinking about majoring in Phonoaudiology to work with kids in the spectrum to help them develop their communication, not only verbally but also other ways of communicating. Do you think that's a good idea? I'd love to get a feedback from you. Thank you so much! P.s. I'm sorry if I wrote something wrong, I'm Brazilian and english is not my first language.
Hello! My name is Brennon Touchet. Next year I am starting a new job teaching a pre-k autism class and was wondering if you had any books you could recommend me about music therapy? By the way I also play guitar so finding this on youtube is AWESOME!
I like the Orff-like work @ 1:52. I'm trying to use some Orff-like activities with some pre-clinical clients diagnosed with Parkinson's. So, I (and basically the other pre-clinical students) are stuck on 1 hello song. I'm trying to collect new ones and I like the way this one works. I'm not clear on the lyrics at 1:20. Would you mind sharing them?
Hey Ryan, how are you my name is Gabriel Hernandez and I’m interested in studying music therapy, I wanted to asked you how was it to do this for living?
The reality: A, nowhere has a music therapy major yet (major city I live in does, but it's HUNDREDS of miles away), so you can get AFA in music ed at city college. Then soak up everything before going to a much more expensive school. Don't waste Pell grants there. Save them for a good and very expensive school later. You get 12 semesters free. PS learn how to be pushy. You'll need it. You will often hear wrong info, so make VERY sure.
Hi Ryan, I'm thinking of studying to become a music therapist but I was wondering, do think I'll struggle to get work with visible tattoos? Be great to get your advice
I have heard a lot about music therapy for Autistic children.. But this video seems to be contrived (acting) taken in one long sitting. Why I say so? The dress of both teacher and the boy remains unchanged, their position remains unchanged, so much so that something kept on the floor on right hand side doesn’t change its position. This somehow fails to convince me about the real efficacy of music therapy.
Yes, this was taken from one session, but in no way is it "acting" or contrived. I'm sorry that you see it like this, but it is just not true. Although it helps many people to see music therapy in action, you can read the research done by major universities that shows the efficacy of music therapy with people with autism here. www.musictherapy.org/assets/1/7/bib_autism10.pdf

hey Ryan, do you have any insights in radio frequency therapies ? ...id like to help out a kid that I know who suffers severe autism
Hi Joan, that is more of a sound healing application and I don’t have any experience with that. Thanks for asking!
Hi Ryan, I'm thinking of studying to become a music therapist but I was wondering, do think I'll struggle to get work with visible tattoos? Be great to get your advice
ok, thanks for that.
Well you can't stop our stims.
you can find an alternative, but you can't stop the habit literally.
Hopefully the result is that the client feels more joy and peace no matter what. 😊

Im autistic but i never do that

How about you create activities that stimulate autistic peoples left side of the brain.... I don’t know why but something tells me that would help..
