- Dave scored a cheap non-working Stanford Research SR650 8 pole programmable elliptical filter on ebay. Can it be fixed?
Well, yes, but it looks like there will be a part 2...

Oh man, I would subscribe to any channel dedicated to buying and troubleshooting equipment from eBay. So much fun.
100% agree, troubleshooting/reverse engineering are imo most interesting stuff to watch :P
FFvidsCore Yeah hard to find that kind of stuff one good channel more is maxxarcade
Dave....your enthusiasm is addictive....love it! Wish I had a fraction of your knowledge, but I'm learning.
lol @ 18:30 where the display has dimmed i expected a lot of smoke
This was a very entertaining video. Disn't even planned on watching the whole thing but got sucked in!
The original heatsink is shown in this video. It also explains the missing nuts. So somebody had a go at that power socket module but could not figure out what the problem was. The unknown dodgy repairman didn't even bother to put the heatsink back on again. Good for the community, because it made some awesome videos.
Stanford Research Systems SR650 Dual Channel Filter Repair - Part 1
8:10 two free standing TO220 devices, one which seems to still have a silpad attached. missing some heatsinks perhaps?
hmm, maybe, but I've seen them before without heat sinks stock on other devices, if they're handling pretty low power, the built in heat sink part can be enough. (sometimes it's cheaper to buy bulk higher rated components rather then several different types)
but you are correct you might want to get a temperature readout just to make sure.
I wonder if someone replaced the backup battery and in the process removed and forgot to replace that heatsink and also damaged the AC filter.
*****
certainly is possible. you never know what odd things people do.

looks like you were spot on :)
21:30 I think your DSA does have a sine sweep mode, you can see it on screen, labelled "periodic chirp"
lol, I just noticed, beyond economical repair = BER , which incidentally is the abbreviation for the new airport in berlin/germany, that swallowe billions of tax money already and they'd need to spend the same amount again to fix all the botched construction and safety issues... it's kinda a big issue in germany at the moment news-wise
Still better than Rommel airport in Stuttgart...
I have no idea what you're talking about most of the time but i still love your videos for some reason...
That's ok. Go buy an oscilloscope and join the resistance :->
What I just saw is much better than an action movie.
I've actually had one of those power line filters explode in a Tektronix 2235A. I jumped in the chair and immediately ripped out the power plug. The whole room smelled like death afterwards. Opening the scope's case, the filter had spewed out some black goo. Replaced the filter and it now works beautifully.
No one noticed the typo on the device screen at 20:10 ? "continuos peak hold"
That sir was so interesting my coffee went cold i was glued to the screen very good vid now i will make a fresh coffee after my tea and watch your part 2.

Under the fuse there is a little PCB that you can pull out with pliars, it should be labeled on the PCB for which voltage you get depending on which rotation you insert it.
nevermind :) maybe I should finish watching the video before commenting lol
I never have seen those filter die either although I have seen the track burn off from the PCB due to the electrical arc caused by moisture in a temperature controller. Most likely someone tried to fix it and failed some time ago. Also it looks like those TO-220 devices in power supply area are missing heatsink.
instanpak molds itself once the two components inside has been mixed. Then you through the pack an it start to inflate because some sort of reaction. The machine just warms the pack to an specific temperature the reaction is supposed to be optimal. But there is no molding machine, you trow the pack and close fast the box, the packs expand until fill the free space.
After a few of these Ebay grabs, I feel like even I could get some broken gear to work. Thanks Dave. The pusher-man. :D
I´ve had the same with some cheap ebay units...Some are really beyond repair, but some just needs new solder joints or a cap job, while others just need a new fuse....One i´ve won had a scratched-off trace on the PCB *by purpose*. It was a 5V supply trace and the scratches on it where new, as there was some left over PCB material around...?!? WTF...some people think?
nice! a repair vid, i like these!, thanks dave
5:00 looks like the machine stood in someone's mouldy shed.. hope the inside isn't rusted to hell
I just got myself a old TI SR-50 calculator, which still has the original NiCad cells in it....holy sh**. Some of the PCB traces are dissolved by the cell´s acid....
No way to get it working again....
TubiCal Yeah that's such a waste of an otherwise (likely) good SR-50 calculator.. I think it was eevblog #507 where Dave took apart a 1989 vintage Acorn Archimedes A3000, and a lot of the traces were way beyond repair due to acid attack originating from some sort of battery, might have been the backup-battery or something. And the thing is that leaky batteries are not a thing of the past, even new batteries still leak like hell when you leave them inside a device for a couple of months. not sure about the quality brands, but the cheapy-ones certainly leak
With the observed corrosion problem I'd expect to find some intermittent contact problems as well.
If you´re into audio gear you *need* such things for measuring THD+N and alike....
I whish i had one of these....but meanwhile i´m happy with my DIY sallen/key filters.
Thanx for this, Dave :)
I think one of the relays is sticking closed and clears itself once powered off.
Instapak - No machine required: Sealed Air Instapak Quick RT amazing simple idea.
I would love to see a rundown of the schematic, an principles of operation for this thing.
I'm really surprised that does not come with a simple button or switch to enable bandpass mode. Having to use a separate BNC cable is too much work!
or for the hardcore geeks, the power connector/fuse holder.
www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdDS/1174803.pdf
Nice find.
They should make these for radio amateurs but then in the mhz range ofcourse. can you image how awesome a adjustable bandpass would be!
mid to late 90s smell LOL. That made me think of when i used to repair PCs. You could always tell a smoker or a cat owner from the smell inside their PC. nasty.
Another great one Dave.
"It's a mid to late 90's vintage and it's got the mid to late 90's smell." That made me laugh.
Hehe you can't beat the old HP35660A I used to set up landline equalisation
for Tait quasi-sync mobile radio systems using one of those; excellent highly reliable instrument. Bet that print trace on the IEC socket board is just corroded through... looks like its all been damp at some time! Thanks for your great vids Dave :)
Filters are awesome.
Not all SRS gear comes with schematics these days. We bought a couple of HV supplies from them and got zilch in terms of technical documentation.
So, who would need one of these? What are they useful for? Is it primarily for audio or power supplies?
What's with the banana on 30:26 ?
The banana just is...
EEVblog for scale
The banana a crucial component to the DSA.
+dumle29 Spotted : 9Gagger
voltage select instructions.
Rotate the fuse-pull lever to remove the fuse.
Remove the small "PCB" and select the operating voltage by
orienting the "PCB" to position the desired voltage to be
visible when pushed firmly into its slot.
"PCB" was written as "printed circuit board" in the manual :P
edit. after watching the whole video, i can see that you allready know that.
Dave is scavenging for parts on the Live feed as we speak, Haha!
I suspect sticky relays or bad contacts on them
It might just be the camera but i noticed the led displays dim a few seconds after you powered it on. Power issue?
Yep. expect a part two...
Bad solder joint on a circuit board inside the filter. Seen it many times...
those bags are filled with expanding foam and then sealed, then you put them in the box.
does it really need the vent? is it turned on for a lot of time?
Old relays which are not powered for a long time, need a couple switching operations to go working again, especially when the entire unit was stored in heavy humidity ambience...may this is why you can´t bypass fhe filter and get some overloading indications....just let the relays clean their contacts by swiching them a few times and then you´re good to go, i think...
74 series TTL logic. That's awesome.
Aw Dave the weird fault with intermittent overload and not switching out low pass filter, you ignored..like we would as we are lazy...But the Aussie Oh-mega Man should have persevered and got those relays clicking...In fact as soon as you opened it I half expected those relays would be crap, only because I'm sure I recognised them for really poor lifetime / early failure type I occasionally see.
At $100 that is a awesome score! Regular price (ebay) $2500. Wow what a deal! Great tool to throw in your bag of tricks. Will sit nicely on your equipment rack/shelf. SSSSSSSSSCCCCOOOOOOOOORRRRRRE!
Line filters going up in smoke on old test gear is almost normal Dave, I'm surprised you have never seen a failure before, as you seem to have a lot of old gear. It seems to happen more often on gear running on 240v, the capacitor(s) fail and melt open usually. I know this is not the case with this one, but it was just in response to you saying you had never seen a line filter open
Jep, i have the same experience over the years with line filters, as they are usually smashed in some cheap ones, even in high quality equipment. AS they are not a "design center goal".
Line filters had to be in there, to meet the FTC / VDE, or what ever you call your local mains safety company.
In addition with a "anti mains pollution regulation" to prevent hi-freq mains noise go get into your device or let some hi-freq noise to be sent into the mains leads (according to VDE 0875 -3/11/14/15/103 or VDE 0838 -1/3/11) which I measured a lot at my days at VDE...
if there is not much to this device and many of the parts need to be replaced then maybe it wasn't worth the shipping cost from california?
I had a similar failure with the filter inside the powersupply of my Amiga 2000 and a blender. The Big capacitors in the filter exploded. Probably due to the age. The "magic smoke" coming out of them was really awful. But after replacing the capacitors everything worked again.
Hey Dave! greetings from Mexico!
Unavailable in eu yet... U have to build more fiberoptic connections with the rest of the world Ausies... :)
Is the banana on top of the DSA modulating or balancing the electron flow in a particular way?
12:39 well jeez that was an easy fix again..!
I was expecting a little more drama on this repair. This was a bloomin' cakewalk.
great vid dave!
You are smart :3 I love your analyze methods
Love the back of this thing "no user serviceable parts inside" WE'RE CALLING YOUR BLUFF MANUFACTURER.
Thanks!
👉 Very Interesting from 👇 under. You are rocking a 9 out of 10 on Old School COoL boat anchor E-quipment. Thank You 🤓
why do you write the description in 3rd person?
Dave likes to write in the 3rd person, it confuses people.
So, you are feeding your dynamic signal analyzer with bananas :D
Beyond Economical Repair (BER)
This is an absolute curse of all industry. Tech is most guilty because the loss of resource barely registers; unlike loosing a car or excavator for example.
does your mother didn't teach you that you shouldn't eat bananas while you working with equipment ?
Shhhh! Outback is where I get a bunch of goodies. Don't tell everyone.
"And I haven't read the manual, of course" Did anyone else laugh to themselves when they heard that?
Hi great jobbie man, now you got that thing working what is it and what's it use ?
Cheers
Dave.
I'd expect that 50 ohms for 240 volts (25 + 25 in series) would make 12.5 ohms for 120 volts (in parallel)..
Good job! an aussie mod job!!
25:35
mmmm...delicious banana.
frollard must be an imgurian for scale lol
25:37 Banana-Bonus! :D
I checked on line and a rebuilt one costs $3250 for one!
jack
wow i only thought green corrosion came from copper not stainless .... interesting information
Doug has influenced you buying audio gear :D
Not quite. I spent a decade or more working in the underwater sonar and seismic industries. 2KHz was considered high frequency stuff.
EEVblog hi Dave, what do you make of the press release by that Australian company that claimed to have found flight MH370 in the Gulf of Bengal? Georesonance is their name
that's employed a lot of people.. I'm trying to convince my software engineer girlfriend to do it...
Id say you never blew you money and thats why youre semi retired and married to a swedish backpacker
Looks like your dsa likes bananas!
don't turn it on take it apart
Good Show 👍😎 🎥🎬📺📸
Is this linear PSU? I don't think you can measure a switch mode transformer by measure resistance across the mains plug
us plug is the best
i could use that for my speakers, i love over-killing when it's possible.
Awesome banana reflection at 25:30
Thanx going out here to the 1080p for let us seeing this!

it looks like its been left out on a beach :P soo much corrosion
Nice work Dave.. bet your well chuffed and bargain
DSP would do much better job than this. But at the time i guess that was the way to go
Banana spotting 101
*Let's take it A-paht!!*
lol nothins smokin lol
That was one of the easiest fixes ever.

25:30 Do you eat something?
Wait.......it's 'THE BANANA' yeah! Beauty :-)
I talino
Im a bit OCD so I dont really need this.. though...
No one really cares about the packing... GET TO IT ALREADY
EvanPlayzGames Some people do care about unboxing though
i love your videos, even if i know nothing about this stuff its very interesting to watch
same here^^
I know next to nothing, but one can pick up a lot :)
