I just bought my first pair of ATC active loudspeakers the SCM100A and it is the most amazing speaker I have ever heard. This was one of the videos that was instrumental in helping me with my purchase. I hope you have Ben on again soon so I get an opportunity to thank him.
It was a very detailed an insightful interview. The fact that it was live made it clearly show that Ben really knows his stuff. I've met him in person and he couldn't be nicer. He has always very open about solid state and valves for active speakers. Great job Terry, as always.
Brilliant interview, this has really helped me in deciding that ATC active speakers are going to be my next purchase. Thanks for putting on the interview. I liked how invested in the long term customer relationship ATC seem to be.
Wonderful and informative interview with well thought out questions! Very classy man, Mr Lilly. I'm happy to see that the ATC philosophy is just as mature, sound and noble as the speakers themselves. If I ever leave my ATC SCM 11's behind it'd probably be for ATC SCM 50 actives. :-)

He worked for Rola loudspeakers in Meblourne in 1968 as a loudspeaker design engineeer based on his thesis for 18 months and then joinrd a Patent Attorney. Very interesting video. A couple of months ago I was considering selling my amp and swapping my passive 40's for active 40's. I live close to the ATC dealer in Australia so I did hours of comparison listening (less than 1hr apart) and concluded I could not hear an improvement. I am driving my 40's with a very powerful hi end amp, that's probably why. By the way the older model ATC's are just as impressive as the latest models. You guys nailed it years ago, you simply make amazing speakers.
What amplifier and power rating is driving your passives atc 40s? And would triwiring these ATCs with 6 monoblocs powered by a high end pre-amp improve sound further or given your experience the improvement would be trivial?
@@fizywig Michi P5/S5 . Amazing performance with the ATC's, incredible. I can't hear any improvement when listening to actives and I'm very experienced with these speakers. I owned the older 40's, now I have the new 40's so years of listening.
I want to put my "2-pence-worth" in here, the human hearing range for sure humans can only hear to 20K hertz or so. When I worked in the sewing trade the use of sonic welding machines was something seeing more use. We were told "oh they operate at 30k hertz or so, you won't be able to hear it" however the machine would have an acoustic cover around it and we could tell when it was being used. So if the music has super high frequencies in it, it needs to be reproduced for it to sound right.
Billy kindly spoke at AES Meblourne Secton meeting in the early eighties (I think). During the speech, he passed around the mid range driver and I could see as it came towards me that I would need both hands to carry the weight! He is an erudite gentleman.
You're getting better at these. Learning alot from your guests. Power and more so heat, affecting how the sound is produced. Have you got more of these lined up?
Also i think the best affordable speakers are : Wharfedale Diamond 11 series , EVO series and Elysian series designed by Peter Comeau. They sound and look like speakers that cost 3 or 4 times more , they are unique and very good built. i have spoken !
I wish someone had asked how an active speaker an a subwoofer would go together. Most recommend a high level input, but I don't see how that would work.
Bingo, that’s the most important question I’d like answered too. I have a dCS Rossini that has balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outs. The XLR connects to my SCM40A speakers, do I connect the RCA to the sub. Will that let me dial into the sub where the speaker rolls off and the sub takes over? Alternatively would an XLR Y-splitter be the way to go? Just realised this video was 3 years ago, duh.
He can answer the comments here in the repeat I'm a bit annoyed you didn't mention any of my comments why is that! Anyway if he's listening !! Are they going to be making any field coil drivers in the active systems, in the future this is a better way to go and if not why not?
@@PursuitPerfectSystem yeah I don't do email it doesn't matter good interview what about the other comment I left you never got a reply. Curious what degree of angle did you have these speakers tilted back what did you find the best.
Sorry what was the comment John - the speaker angle? I havent measured it to know the exact angle but I titled the speakers up using the short at the back long at the front spike technique and left it at that

Ben is a great guy. Met him and talked to him on the phone, his knowledge of speaker driver design is amazing.
ATC has the best speakers in the world. Period. Sadly I can not afford them! :(

That was fantastic guys.

They are a little adhoc but yes I will be doing more :)
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Have you thought about just doing a Q & A session about a specific area with some preselected questions?
Do you mean a Q&A with me or a special guest??

am I not special enough...... haha I will see what I can do
Thanks Ben, and the interviewer, not bad interview, 7/10

Hi, can you make a review on the scm40? Now that you already tested the 50s how do they compair? Thanks
@Pursuit Perfect System whats the best actives speaker for moves ?

Great interview. Can you define what is a small room and what is a medium room etc?
Would is the atc p1 better than the arcam amps in your opinion
Hi I've got the arcam avr550 and want to power my left and right with a good amp
Works for ATC but has Sonos 1? Good advert for Sonos :-)
That Naim is not good enough for the SCM40. They are a bit on the thin bright side. The 40s deserve so much more
Thx;)
Hi ben" Comparison about Triangle brand how about it
You lucky lucky lucky bastard, 😂😂😂😂😂
haha :)
Did anyone else hear the Siamese cat in his house?
That's not a cat, it's first test of the tweeter for the new product for 2023....
Can a single. Person lift these up without awkwardness from floor to place on stands? Would yse a dolly/ trolly to transport further distances
The 50's are heavy but you can pick them up
@PursuitPerfectSystem Are the Active versions of the scm 50s likewise liftable from floor to stands by a single average male adult?
I’d like ATC to go DSP upstream with active crossover in the digital domain 👍🏻🤠
No! Keep them analogue.
A separate active crossover module to add to our existing power amps for the entire passive range is what we want…
But with the active system I can't use my lovely tube power amp which sounds so much better than everything from the SS territory...
Tube pre amp instead maybe

I am surprise the ATC did't explore ribbon tweets, because dome tweeter's can sound splashy in top end. PS Audio rave about ribbon tweeter's
I have 3 pairs of ATC speakers and non of them sound at all splashy.
They dont use beryllium domes.
Amazing that people with money aren’t buying ATC over the wanky Hi-Fi crap.
