In this exhilarating first episode of our 3-day community fishing adventure, join us as we take on the mighty Mahanadi River in Tarito, using traditional trap net techniques amidst powerful water currents. Planning for this exciting day began a week ahead, ensuring everything was ready: a customized truck tyre tube for river floating, 350 meters of hand-knitted Disco trap net, buoyancy with lead and floats, and our dedicated crew of four-me, Silu, Kaalia Bhai, and Uttam Bhai.
We kicked off the adventure at 3:00 AM, collecting the nets and preparing for an extraordinary day of fishing for the entire village. After gearing up and finalizing all the equipment by 5:00 AM, we began the mission. The Mahanadi River was fierce, but we persisted, casting our net into the high current. The crew worked seamlessly: I documented the journey on camera, Silu floated on the tube to direct the net, Kaalia Bhai handled the release of the net, and Uttam Bhai, fully immersed, orchestrated the process while wearing a blue T-shirt.
As dawn broke over the serene landscape of Tarito, we were in the heart of the river, joined by more villagers-Pahala Bhai, Mustafa, and Rintu-all contributing to this community fishing effort. Our net spread across the river channel, covering nearly 500 meters by the time we reached the creek at the end of our village. After 4 to 5 hours of dragging the net, we had caught an impressive 10KG of fish, including numerous river carps and mullets. Other species like Goby Fish, Knife Fish, and Chandi Fish made occasional appearances, though in smaller numbers.
Throughout the video, you'll hear hilarious Odiya dialogues from Uttam Bhai as we work together. The footage captures the untouched beauty of Tarito, with the Mahanadi River flowing majestically, the dawn giving way to a stunning sunrise, and the natural music of birds and critters accompanying us along the way.
