    Thank you Ralph. I’m beginning my journey with acrylic paint and I noticed when I painted on an untreated canvas it absorbed way more paint than I liked so I did some research on what I needed. Then found your video. I’m looking forward to the outcome.

    I always buy store bought canvases because I don’t know how to make them and even if I did, I wouldn’t have the time.
    So I’m glad they’re usually pre-coated because when I was younger I just painted directly on to them and I feel happy knowing those paintings are good for some more years.
    I started putting gesso on my canvases rather recently and I didn’t know if it was the right thing but I’m glad it is :)

    Is there a neutral / colorless one ? Sometimes to paint purses or bags we need a transparent base.

    • @seiyashirayomi3382
      @seiyashirayomi3382 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A little late for a reply but anyways
      U don't have to base coat the whole purse
      I have seen a lot of people use white/black gesso for painting the design out first and then use colour
      Like if u r painting an apple on ur purse
      Paint the outline of an apple with gesso
      Paint the blank area inside the outline and then u r ready to go
      Painting an apple over it should be no problem at all
      I hope my words r not confusing

    Also rough canvas is lethal for sucking acrylics dry , smooth - cotton canvases are better , sadly the more expensive the better .
    Frederix , winsor & newton cotton canvases are good for acrylics .

    How do I know if my canvas was pretreated with gesso?

    • @d1i9n2a2
      @d1i9n2a2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Brittany Powers I know this was a month ago, but if you're still wondering, it should be written on the label.

    • @janX9
      @janX9 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Brittany Powers If it's not printed on the paper that came with the canvas then simply look at the canvas. If it has gesso, the canvas will feel more smooth yet firm and slightly glossy in comparison to no gesso. Also, the weave and color on the front would differ from the back as they don't gesso the back of the canvas. It's easy to tell, just get your eyes nice and close to the canvas.

    • @dianamorales7335
      @dianamorales7335 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh my goodness! I didn't know canvas can also have gesso already! And I'm looking at the label and mine luckily does have it! awesome! Glad this comments helped me.

    I have a cotton canvas from the dollar store, is it pretreated or do I have to go buy gesso and apply it myself?

    • @seiyashirayomi3382
      @seiyashirayomi3382 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cotton canvas will absorb a lot
      So u can use water colours and pencil colours on it without any gesso
      But if u r using acrylics and oil paint u won't be able to handle the colours as u like them
      Gesso is suggested for acrylics and oil paint
      I hope u find this useful

    I'm doing my research and reviewing different videos. On another video the demonstrator used a very very fine sand paper first to extra smooth, brush off dust, then prime. I know everyone is different and so are their preferences, to each their own, blah blah blah. My question: if you don't do this, why not? What would be the pro or cons to extra smoothing? If someone out there has tried botu, which do you like?

    Is it necessary to prime canvas?

    • @davidstephenson8656
      @davidstephenson8656 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't say that it is necessary to prime canvas. But I do believe that it's important for the canvas to be primed so that paint won't get too absorbed into the surface.
