The surviving members of Led Zeppelin wanted Jason Bonham to attend with them to represent his dad. He told them he couldn’t make it. He didn’t say why. That’s why they were shocked to see him.
In regards to your question, American presidents honor great artists and performers for their contribution to the arts. That evening President Obama honored Led Zeppelin. He gave a great speech about them earlier in the event, and he personally gave each member of Led Zeppelin the medals they were wearing. In the speech, President Obama implied that he listened to them when he was a teenager. Robert Plant invited Jason Bonham to the event to accept the award on behalf of his father. Jason told him he had a prior engagement and couldn't attend. So Robert was very surprised seeing that Jason would be playing drums with Heart. This was an epic performance, and in my opinion one of the greatest on TH-cam.
@@michaelasay8587 If I were to describe Obama, Biden, and Harris according to what they stand for, I would have used a much stronger word than "yuck". However I was referring to the honoring of Led Zeppelin.
It was Robert Plant that didn't know that John's son Jason Bonham was going to be there, which was another reason why Robert got so emotional, besides the fantastic performance of Stairway To Heaven by Heart.
Heart is are definite legends of rock and roll in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Check out their songs "Barracuda" and "alone" are just 2 of their incredible catalog of songs. Nancy (the brunette) has an absolute insane voice and range!!!
To play the most famous rock song of all time, including a crowd which not only included the US President, but also the three young gods who created the original - and to pull it off without a flaw. Those two women have massive cojones and wear them well. Goosebumps. No-one else could have done this as well, and it was a magical tribute to LZ, who were welling up. You need to hear some Heart: "Crazy on You", "Magic Man", and "Barracuda" would be a great place to start, and add in an example of their softer side with "Dreamboat Annie".
Best concert I've ever been to was Heart with The Jason Bonham Experience opening for them. The show didn't even start until the encore. The encore was both bands performing together for another 45 minutes of Zeppelin songs
The Kennedy Center Honors is the best of the best (not just musicians, either). Another KCH performance worth watching is Aretha Franklin's tribute to hugely influential songwriter and musician Carole King. Aretha had a big hit many years ago with one of King's songs, and she tore the roof off!
Jason was also playing his das drum kit too. Generally Zep didn’t like others playing this song, they are friends with Ann& Nancy, & they did it beautifully. I love the closeup of Page, you can slightly see his lips moving, he’s mouthing the notes. Besides it being so beautiful, I think Plant was missing John, thinking he should be there watching Jason. Robert & John were friends since they were about 14, that’s to why Robert is Jason’s godfather. The whole introduction for Zeppelin at this is great to watch, love Jack Blacks speech, it’s funny & he loves them so much. Once again thanks hun, keep on this Led Zeppelin journey.

It always astounds me that people in the comment section continue to recommend a live cover version of a song to a reactor who has only heard a live version of the song to begin with, without ever hearing the original studio recording first, which in the case of Stairway to Heaven, is not only a masterpiece (and probably the most played song on rock radio for decades), but also, one of the greatest achievements in audio recording history. The reactor has nothing to compare it to. I clicked on the link, checked if he heard the studio recording first, he hadn't (which is sadly, a common occurrence on TH-cam), so I stopped this video before it even began (not that anybody cares, but just speaking the truth). Jay, I highly recommend that you listen to the studio recoding of Stairway to Heaven. I know you were totally blown away with the studio recording of "Since I've Been Loving You" after having already listened to the live MSG version (again...doing it backwards). You were blown away, and rightfully so. The studio recording of "Since I've Been Loving You" is one of the greatest audio recordings in music history. The same is true for the studio recording of "Stairway to Heaven". It will touch your soul. In the future, I highly recommend checking out the studio recordings first, especially with Led Zeppelin who were notorious for changing the songs nightly and often going into long drawn-out jam sessions. If long drawn-out jam session ain't your thing, I would stick with the studio recordings, at least on 1st listen. Peace
I always get a bit annoyed when I see that a commenter has decided, at the persistent requests of commenters/patreons, to do a band tribute reaction before they've even listened to the band being honored (which has happened several times with this LZ tribute). How can a virgin listener possibly hope to feel the full emotional impact of such a tribute if they don't have any experience with their music? Not the case here, I know; just wanted to weigh in on reaction pet peeves. ( I agree that studio versions of songs should always be listened to before live - even legendary live performances).
There was never anything like seeing Led Zeppelin in concert. I was lucky enough to see them 3 times at the Forum in Inglewood. Check out their live version of In My Time of Dying.
Robert didn't know that Jason would be there. He asked Jason to come, and Jason told him he had a conflict on this schedule and couldn't make it. Hence, Robert being surprised.
Jason knew they would be there. Robert invited Jason to be there with them to represent his father as the story goes. Jason told him he had a prior commitment and wouldn't be able to attend, hence the exchange you saw play out. Prior commitment was him playing in their honor.
For Heart they have so many good songs. They just did 3 on the Howard Stern show back a few months ago. Those are 3 great ones to check out. They did Barracuda, Magic Man and a cover of Going To California by Led Zeppelin.
Maybe not now, but Stairway to Heaven has been called GOAT of rock songs. A saying "This is a performance for the ages". This tribute and time Aretha Franklin sang "Natural Woman" on this stage are ultimate performances. Many great shows have been on this stage. Anne Wilson was in her early 60's doing this. An annual award show, honoring performers for lifetime of works. This is kind of like a Hall of Fame. The Kennedy Centers Honors is "as good as it gets"
They would be so nervous performing that for Led Zepplin. I would love to see your reaction to Heart when they were younger. Also young Madonna and MJ 🤍
I saw them. With Bonham. 1977. With my mom. She loved the British rockers. I wanted to be Ann Or Nancy Wilson. They’re both badass. Greetings from Chicago. Listen to the live version of Crazy On You or Barracuda from Heart. Mom loved them too.

The Kennedy Center Honors are an annual event where they give a sort of lifetime achievement award to people in different genres in the arts. The Kennedy Center itself is the big arts venue in Washington DC, where the opera and symphony perform regularly. The Honors include classical and popular music, film, TV, and other performing arts, but not painting and so on. The president is usually involved, regardless of party or political controversies, but Trump is the exception who didn't want to participate. The live event happens in early December and is a very hard ticket to get. But it's on TV around Christmas time.
