Perfected just in time to be rendered obsolete by the helicopter. Looks fine on a nice calm Pacific day, but I'd hate to try that in any sort of sea, or with inclement weather.
This was actually used successfully at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, despite it looking very unlikely to succeed. Very labor intensive, but very cheap system, as long as you had enlisted men to handle the work.

Looks like it was a huge pain in the ass to get one plane airborne and God help you if you try it in rough seas.
